No NIT for UNC

It’s pathetic actually. These players and this team are playing in the tournament they deserved. But they are too good to play in it? At what point this season has this team resembled a team that deserved to play in the NCAA tournament. They got chance after chance to get a win that was needed and couldn’t deliver.

Why does this have written all over it that some of the players felt they were too good to play in the NIT, and Hubert just gave into their wishes, just like he has done with the curious shot selection all year long. The tail is wagging the dog in Chapel Hill

i put this on the other thread but if this is in fact the case we and we have a repeat scenario next year, he should be fired bottom line.

If they are not playing because ether don't have enough players to field a team because of everyone leaving or quiting then he needs to be fired NOW!

I'm not sure there are enough leaving to not field a team but I feel like there are enough leaving to throw up some HUGE red flags if they were to accept an NIT bid.

also true. based on this year alone, would it be right to fire him? maybe, maybe not. his lack of adjustments and some of the nonsense he continued to spew in pressers gives me ZERO confidence in his ability as our leader. great guy, but arguably the worst hire you could make at this level based on his resume coming in.

What would be the point of playing? Its not like this group needs more time together

Let them go home and hopefully not touch a basketball for a month and figure out (if theyre coming back) what they really want out of playing for UNC

It’s actually pretty simple these guys are already embarrassed no reason to risk further embarrassment.. it’s also pretty clear this team has no leader & there’s some kind of disfunction between players .. best to just move on & start fresh ..besides you have 2 5th year players & Bacot & Love likey with a foot out the door.. Guys head’s definitely wouldn’t be in to it

I no longer am a Hubert guy after this. This is classless.
Maybe out of his control. Lost his chance to control these players early on in the season. Hubert can’t show up for the NIT without any players but he should have taken control of the players from day 1. I hope he learns from that. One has to assume the over whelming number of players simply don’t care about the program and called it quits.

Good grief Hubert’s atrocious year keeps getting worse.

He’s going to have to grow a backbone and command respect if he’s ever gonna be successful as head coach. This season was a total crap show and the team didn’t respect him enough to even put forth effort and now the coaches and players are quitting on the season.

Tar Heel fans ultimately control the scenario. If the Dean Dome averages less than 10,000 per game it will speak loudly that what we’re getting isn’t acceptable.

I said from the time he was hired that one of my biggest concerns about him was he was too nice to command respect, jump down a kids throat when necessary and just generally be captain of the ship. That concern is more so today.

He only needs five players. If it really is a matter of the players saying no, then he's responsible for fostering that type of attitude.

The AD should accept the NIT invitation if offered as a matter of principal and to protect the good name of UNC, as we are not above the NIT, especially this season. If HD doesn't want to coach in the NIT, then find somebody who will. If the "Run It Back" players want to opt out, then fine, but they need to opt out of next season as well if they have remaining eligibility. Then HD or his replacement should use other players who need and want PT. They could always use some JV players !

If he doesn't have 7 players on this roster who want to play basketball, then it's still on him.

Isn't it lost revenue for the school? I dunno how much $$$ is on the line, but that is worth considering.

Despite wins or loses I have always been a strong supporter of the Tar Heels. Always proud to wear my UNC gear whether we win a Natty or get blown out. Tonight I have to do some serious consideration as to whether I have enough pride in the team / University to continue that support.

Good decision. It’s house cleaning time. This year will never be forgotten. Being the first pre season #1 to not make the tournament is like being the first 1 seed to lose to a 16 seed. Won’t be forgotten.
Worse

I see two reasons for this:

1. Hubert has truly lost the team and the players refused to play/etc and he's pandering to the players

2. Hubert doesn't believe the team deserves another run together and he's ripping off the bandaid early.

Either way, it's a massive failure and one he'll need to wear.

Bad look. There was probably a way to play. But… I think deep down a lot of the players wanted the season to be over a while ago.

Easy to be emotional right now though. Will judge in a few weeks/months when the dust settles. Have a feeling a lot of dirt comes out about the season.

The Players Quit
The Coaches Quit
The Carolina faithful Quit

A very dark day in Tar Heel history
@DaSheed I love your posts generally, but seriously how did the Carolina faithful quit, and if you mean fans, were we supposed to blindly support the sht we saw from the players and especially the coaches this year?

And even if the fans "quit" - what would that have to do with results? This team had more, and more vocal, in person fan support than they earned or deserve. The fans had nothing to do with Heels gagging at least a half dozen road and home games and neutral site games they should've won. Its not like they would've put the Heels in the tourney if they had better fan support.

Fans / Carolina faithful are not the problem at all. The faithful should've lost faith in this year's dumpster fire, to the extent that they have lost faith

And the people in charge of it.
Serious question - I haven't seen elsewhere - who actually makes the final call on turning down the NIT bid? Is it Hubert alone? Do the players take a vote (stupid). Does the AD Bubba have some say?

To me it should be Hubs decision alone. Period. And if certain players don't want to play, fine. Play Blue Steel for 40 minutes if that is what it takes. I can't imagine a worse, smug, arrogant, delusional self-unaware look for UNC. Disaster. Embarrassing.

So instead of Hubert meeting with players starting tomorrow, finding out whose leaving, giving the returning players their summer practice programs, recruiting portal replacements, and working with recruits to reclassify... you want him to delay all of that to play in a meaningless tourney with Blue Steel players?

The only smug, arrogant, delusional, self-unaware people are the ones who can't see that the decision to skip the NIT was made so that retooling the roster can begin sooner. It may make the difference in UNC beating other schools for coveted transfers. This is an arms race.
