No NIT for UNC

I don't remember a lot of what the dookies did the last time. This is a UNC board. And, I really don't care what they did the last time.
Kind of surprised this is such an issue…
What’s the upside to going?
If we lose the first game, we become an even bigger joke.
If we win it all, all we’ll hear is “good job winning some kind of title”…
Going or not going isn’t going to change any minds about staying or transferring.
Plenty of chances for injury…just takes one play.
Are we really packing the Dome for a NIT game? Is the prize money for winning huge? Is there prize money?
Who remembers anything from the NIT ever? It’s there to fill TV time and sell commercials…that’s it.
Different time in the sport…let’s focus on next season and improving the roster, the coaching, anything that will put us back on top. Going to a tournament no one cares about it ain’t it.

I would assume Hubert has the final say. Shouldn't matter what the players want, but it says a lot about his leadership that he actually has people on the team that would feel like they had an option.
Thought so. You just proved that Blue Blood teams turning down the NIT is not the least bit memorable.
Duke turned down the NIT 2 years ago. And no one remembers it.
According to a guy on TOS that claims to be a team manager, he says Hubert allowed the players to vote and the decision was made based on the vote. This goes along with what I saw during the season and lack of leadership and command from the head coach.
Horrible take. Why would you expect anyone here to remember anything about duke?
Are players the only people that can put their names in the portal or can we get coaches to put their names in too?
He literally said no one would forget UNC turning down then NIT. This was not a statement confined just to the tiny group of people on this board.
But in reality he's wrong. People will forget it just as quickly as all of you have forgotten all the other examples of Blue Bloods turning down the NIT.
We can definitely put your name in the portal for embarrassing the fan base with your 3rd grade reading comprehension.
When UNC uses the dookies to measure themselves against, then the problems are worse than I thought. I dunno when they did or didn't. I barely know when they won the NCAA tournament. I just proved that I don't use what the dookies have done to measure what I want the team I SUPPORT to do. ETA: In fact, it's most likely that I will want them to do the polar opposite of what dookies do.

Agreed. I read a bit longer article on this site, where they quoted three players who either didn't want to talk about it, or flat out voted no (Nance, Leaky, Bacot).
Like you said - the players shouldn't have an option. I can't imagine a way Hubs could possibly look any weaker. Like the players have Hub's nuts in a cup.
I know these are more established coaches, but try to imagine any past Heels coach, or K, or Izzo, Self, Few, whoever...asking if the players feel like making the effort to represent the basketball team and the University by, oh I don't know, doing what they signed up for...playing basketball in scheduled games! If players said they didn't want to play? Fine! Don't show up and we will play the guys who want to play. The cowards and quitters don't even have to suit up for the game.
This says a lot about the lack of character of the players who don't want to play, or maybe there is some serious (stuff) internally - between players - that may or may not come to light.
But it irrefutably shows what a weak spineless fetal position soft inept "leader" and coach Hubs is. Even if he laid down the law, and that meant a kid or two transferring or quitting midseason, would that turn out worse that the existing sht show?
Now what is worse is Hubs has set the horrible precedent that players can railroad/ walk all over him and he'll do anything to be the players' BFF. Screw that. Players shouldn't be friends with coaches or necessarily like them. But they have to respect the coach.
Hubs has done nothing to win any respect among current players, coaches, fans, or even future recruits. A soft easy weak pushover. Yikes. Great times ahead.
UNC fans won't forget. UNC fans that are dyed-in-the-wool fans, will always remember when they fvcked up and how badly they fvcked up.
And, Nance, Bacot, and Leaky can carry their asses back to Chapel Hill. Hubert Davis looks like a whipped dog.

Multiple teams did that year because of covid. Not because they took their ball and went home.
Although, I could definitely see Coach K and the dookies throwing a tantrum and taking their ball and going home. I just didn't want the UNC Tar Heels basketball program to mimic that entitled prick.
Let’s get the facts out there. Who exactly wanted to play and who didn’t? Coach, man up. If it was you that made the decision then fess up. If the players revolted then point it out. Hubert, stop being a nice guy and tell us right now who made this decision and what exactly what are your plans to right the ship. I have given lots of money to this University. If you want any more then step up to the plate and name names.
It's been leaked. From what I have been able to gather, (not saying I got all the truth).
Bacot, Leaky, and Nance were against playing. (Bacot is hurt).
Supposedly washington and shaver are also hurt.
Team voted against playing.
We do have Caleb saying he would absolutely play in the NIT if invited not top long ago in an interview. RJ I refuse to believe would be against it. So, idk the details, but that's what I have picked up so far.
The guys who are hurt don't have to play.
The guys who don't want to play should transfer.
The coaches who don't want to coach in the NIT should hit the road.
Nobody should ever talk about the Carolina Way or Family again after this disgrace.
Fair enough. I’m as frustrated as anybody and don’t mind rattling the cage for a reaction. Not sure what social media you’re on or follow but Instagram and Twitter went to the next level and beyond this season and people were posting things that were just downright evil about the players. I don’t care how much NIL money they’re getting. They‘re human. It hurts. Constructive criticism is fine, but far too many “fans” let it get out of hand. Thus my comment about them quitting. Gary-7 said it best, “there's a difference between critiquing and bashing and it’s an important one.”
I’m reminded of Coach Smith’s famous quote:
“There are two billion people in China that don’t even know we’re playing”

Just telling the tidbits I have heard. It may not be true, but it's all I got. Many people have confirmed the team voted though.
I feel your pain. I gave up watching pro sports a few years ago. In the preseason, I said that I was doing the same with college sports after this year as I don’t like the direction they’re headed. This season will leave a sour taste in my mouth for a long time. I’ve supported the Heels emotionally and financially for 60 years and I wish them the best going forward. It’s been a great run and has brought me great joy(along with some heartache). But a great run nonetheless. Thank you Heels!
No need taking a L to a mid major making matters worse. The team made a good decision, Bacot and RJ need to decide if they are returning or entering portal. I have stated before, I am team Caleb, but we can't have him shooting 30%, and staying in the game.
RJ, love, or Bacot could be the missing piece to allot of teams. I expect Bacot to return, but I think Love will stay before RJ, and I don't think RJ will return. Those guys and our team laid an egg this year. I would assume players no longer wanted it, I can't imagine HD turning down a chance to play.

If UNC returns to the the NCAAT second weekend the next year or 2 then maybe people forget.
You failed to mention that Duke dropped out of ACC tournament due to the players being exposed to Covid. Seton Hall, Xavier, St Johns and Louisville always turned down the bid. The reason? Covid

Yep - someone needs to explain this live. I don’t expect them to name names necessarily but having Steve Kirschner be the one to explain it is about as no-account as it gets
That about sums it. They come off as self-entitled whiners - if we can't get the NCAA, we're still too good for the NIT.
If Davis were a coach with fight, he'd take a bunch of walk ons to the NIT if the team voted to wimp out.
Dean would have used the time to hone the team for next year.
So they are retooling by sending the message to players that they are too important to compete?
I am told Hubert put it to a vote with the players allowing them vote yes or no to the NIT bid via anonymous note cards. The majority vote was they didn’t want to play.
If this is the case Hubert failed as a coach.
