No NIT for UNC

The guys who are hurt don't have to play.

The guys who don't want to play should transfer.

The coaches who don't want to coach in the NIT should hit the road.

Nobody should ever talk about the Carolina Way or Family again after this disgrace.

I completely agree with this take - this was a great chance for some of the younger players to get game action minutes against decent opposition. Playing in that tournament is part of being a member institution of the college basketball ecosystem. The seniors and players that won't be back want to opt out - fine - but you take whoever wants a spot on next year's team and go play and start building toward next year. I agree with others on here who said this will all be forgotten, but that short term memory of the culture as a whole doesn't make it any less of a disgrace in the present that we backed out of this tournament in my mind. I'm very disappointed in the coaching staff for letting this happen and disappointed enough of the players didn't want to go try to compete. It tells me we need a number of new bodies in this program to get the competitive desire back to where it needs to be. Dismal end to one of the most disappointing UNC seasons I can remember.

Fair enough. I’m as frustrated as anybody and don’t mind rattling the cage for a reaction. Not sure what social media you’re on or follow but Instagram and Twitter went to the next level and beyond this season and people were posting things that were just downright evil about the players. I don’t care how much NIL money they’re getting. They‘re human. It hurts. Constructive criticism is fine, but far too many “fans” let it get out of hand. Thus my comment about them quitting. Gary-7 said it best, “there's a difference between critiquing and bashing and it’s an important one.”

I’m reminded of Coach Smith’s famous quote:

“There are two billion people in China that don’t even know we’re playing”
Yes @DaSheed you're right on and I agree with this. I rarely read any SM and the comments to original articles or news are especially toxic unhelpful garbage that serve no purpose but to instill hatred and hurt. I'm 100% against any of that. Thanks for the clarification.

Exactly. You use NIT games to see guys in action you have not played or barely played. Give then game time now in the NIT, and you may see players who should have been seeing action all this past season.

Kind of surprised this is such an issue…

What’s the upside to going?

If we lose the first game, we become an even bigger joke.

If we win it all, all we’ll hear is “good job winning some kind of title”…

Going or not going isn’t going to change any minds about staying or transferring.

Plenty of chances for injury…just takes one play.

Are we really packing the Dome for a NIT game? Is the prize money for winning huge? Is there prize money?

Who remembers anything from the NIT ever? It’s there to fill TV time and sell commercials…that’s it.

Different time in the sport…let’s focus on next season and improving the roster, the coaching, anything that will put us back on top. Going to a tournament no one cares about it ain’t it.
The best focus own next season would be live game action for players tom work on their weaknesses and players with no or little PT getting experience.

People don't get it.

It is absolutely on Hubert if he would have done his job the healthy and the not healthy players would run through a wall for him regardless.

It's about installing a mentality and he didn't do that!
You’ve got injured players and players that are ready to move on. Why should leaky want to play in the NIT after 5 seasons, he’s likely devastated that his dream is dead. Time for Nance, Leaky and McKoy to move on with their lives.

He does not have to. He can quit. The guys who want to return need to play to get game experience. Leaky, in your scenario, voted selfishly to deny them game experience.

More proof that we need to stop expecting the glory days to ever return to Carolina basketball. With one and done, the portal and NIL deals... what did any of us expect? The game is how we all allowed it to become and has devolved to this state over decades. The vast majority of kids of the age we are recruiting are more selfish and certainly more ego driven and have little to no concept of what loyalty even means. It's a new age... any kid being recruited to play D1 ball these days thinks they're pro material be they correct or deluded. Add the ability to change schools multiple times with ZERO consequences to their playing time + being able to get paid $$$ for doing absolutely nothing but saying, for instance, "I like lemon Oreos" only adds to the ego and rewards the behavior.
You either have to temper your expectations or watch your happiness decline and the amount of time you realize you have wasted fall away from you. It's not worth it. College sports have become little more than reality TV. Once kids are admitted to school just because they can excel athletically but can barely read much less complete a middle school level math problem... I know this has been the story well before I started following college sports (1981 UNC v. Indiana is my first vivid memory) but it's devolved at an astronomical rate since. College athletics should be played by college level individuals. If you can't get in you shouldn't be suiting up. It trickles down and I know athletics fund colleges but can you imagine what the entire college system would be if it werent propped up by income revenue sports for the last 75+ years?
These sports are a joke compared to what they were even 10-20 years ago. Don't delude yourself into thinking The "Carolina Way" lived a minute after Dean Smith retired... Roy did his bit to continue it but you can bet he buckled quickly under changes bigger than his scope to control... changes DES would have walked away from whistling a tune.

Sometimes you need to know when to let go of things that only shine so brightly because you want so desperately for them to.

It's more of a game now than it ever was... If you let it control you- you have no one but yourself to blame. Too many truly bright things in this short ass life to actually devote your attention to than a sport that is driven by money and caters to the whims of ego guided teenagers who are paid to make their decisions who all think they're going to be playing in the pros one day.

Your last paragraph was some great info. Thanks

I feel your pain. I gave up watching pro sports a few years ago. In the preseason, I said that I was doing the same with college sports after this year as I don’t like the direction they’re headed. This season will leave a sour taste in my mouth for a long time. I’ve supported the Heels emotionally and financially for 60 years and I wish them the best going forward. It’s been a great run and has brought me great joy(along with some heartache). But a great run nonetheless. Thank you Heels!
Right there with you, @Archer2, timeline and all.

I reserve the right to change my mind but I'm not planning to sign up to watch UNC next fall.

Will they win me back? Will I just cave in? We'll see.

That said, I'm still curious who will leave and what will happen in the portal. But until they act like Carolina again - and do so consistently - it will be hard to be a fan.

Sorry to hear that. I don't participate on those media.

It can get rough here, but that sounds much worse.

Just telling the tidbits I have heard. It may not be true, but it's all I got. Many people have confirmed the team voted though.
If so, I sure hope it wasn't unanimous. And I'd like to know how they voted as individuals. If my favorite players voted not to play, it will be easier to turn my back on this team. But I hope that's not the case.

Conversely, everyone who voted to play will go up in my estimation.

What would our team look like if everyone who voted not to play left the team?

Frankly, if there were 5 guys who voted to play they should have played. Maybe warn the NIT that they wouldn't be bringing a full team, so the NIT could rescind the invite.

That is bullshit. Forgive me for the Braveheart w Mel Gibson analogy but for the rest of his life , Leaky and others will often think back on what will probably be remembered as the best time of their lives and wish they could wear the UNC uniform again . This was the wrong decision. Davis should have made it clear the team was playing .

I was looking forward to playing Vandy and Cincinnati in the NIT.

Those UNC-coached teams weren't too proud to keep playing for themselves and their fans.

Yes.

Even if a majority on the team didn't want to play, if Hubert had wanted to play we'd be playing.

Is there anyone here who doubts Hubert could get this team excited to play in the NIT? That's his superpower, for crying out loud.

Team vote or no team vote, it's all on Hubert. He had a choice of teaching them to be men or letting them be pussies, and he made the wrong choice.

Why would the parents of any player want their kid coached by Hubert after seeing him make that decision?

If true that Nance, Bacot and Black all voted no… well that’s some great senior leadership exemplified. Way to set the tone for the underclassmen guys. If things don’t go your way, just quit. That’s the message sent.

That’s fan speak. I have zero issues with guys who are not coming back deciding not to play in the NIT. I’d love to see Styles, Nickel, Dunn, etc get some additional reps but I’m not going to blow this way out of proportion like some are.

I wonder if Cadeau wants to reclassify to join this train wreck?

The 2024 class hasn't signed yet so they can reopen their recruitments. They should probably give that some thought.

Wilcher and High have already signed. Is not wanting to play for a pussy coach alongside pussy players a good enough reason to get out of those commitments?
Lol, a little over the top don’t you think ?

Bingo. I hope that's not true but if so, you nailed it.

They could have said "if we go, I'd rather not play." Even that would be disappointing, but it would give other guys more PT.

I actually think it's worse that Hubert allowed the team to vote. They voted no. What does that say about the competitive spirit that Hubert and staff have instilled in them?

With that said, I'm really glad I don't have to see this team take the floor again.

It says that these players have no heart and no fight, which means they lack what it takes to become Champion. These players are soft and lazy and ready to wilt into the corners when they show that they need to work hard to reach their potential.

Fan speak? How do you think Phil Ford or Michael Jordan or Brad Daugherty or Billy Cunningham (who never got to play in the NCAA) or Larry Miller or Charlie Scott or Bobby Jones or Mike O'Koren or James Worthy or George Lynch or Eric Montross or Derrick Phelps or Antawn Jamison or Shammond Williams, etc. would have voted and felt if their teammates had voted to quit playing when they had a chance to win something?

Different times. NIT is basically exhibition. I am sure there are some players who are burning to play but the majority are done. The team needs some big changes and I think we will see them coming soon.

Why is there even an NIT? In the old days when only 1 conference representative went to the Big Dance it made more sense.

What you said here explains why there wasn't any accountability on the court and apparently none off the court in the off season since not ONE player improved any part of their games from last year to this year! The tail is wagging the dog.

Hubert is the problem and will be going forward unless a change is made.

So what do you say to those players that wanted to play? Hey, we know you want to keep playing, but **** you? I'm not sure how you could ever consider yourself a good teammate by taking that chance to play away from them. And the coach allowed them to screw the players that wanted to play.

You tell the players that the majority of his teammates voted NO.

when there is love for the sport, pure joy being on the court, you just want to play. Especially after having to sit and watch for most of the season. Especially after showing up for every practice. The dream is to play wearing that uniform.
How many opportunities do the bench guys have?

You Hubert is the coach, so coach them and “give them that joy and their own unique experiences” that you have been preaching repeatedly since day 1.

There is no experience when you quit playing.

The giant leap you make to Hubert having a blatant character flaw is where you are way over the top. You and I have absolutely zero idea of what is actually going through the players and coaches mind. It could be anything.
Fair enough.

Nevertheless, it's clear to me that this was a bad decision. And he's the coach who bears responsibility and has the reputation of having the communication chops to have shaped a better response. So until I hear the "real" story, I have no qualms placing the blame squarely on Hubert. It's rebuttable, but it's where the responsibility sticks until it actually is rebutted.
