OOTB Carolina football discussion thread

I was very impressed by Brandon Harris this past weekend. He looked like a completely different person from week 1 to week 2. Honestly, I think even the coaches were surprised because when he went in to the game, the first possession the coaches did not let him throw it once. Finally on possession 3 (?) they had to let him throw it, and he started throwing darts all over the field.

Louisville fans better thank God that they have Lamar Jackson. He masks a lot of their deficiencies. They're a 7-5 football team without LJ.

Good to go. Sounds like he was held out of the second half as a precaution, but by Monday he was feeling good enough to practice.

Buy a subscription, cheapskate.
It's obvious you live alone with no wife or kids. If someone loved you enough and you had those responsibilities you might know how expensive it is. However, if you pay for my kids' school lunch I will sign up.

I'll think about it.

Is the game on TV tomorrow?

Sort of?

It's hard to tell but I'm not counting on being able to watch.
The game is on the Stadium Network. There are a variety of viewing options so I'll do my best to list them here.
I'm personally going to use the last option since the Pluto TV app is available on phones, tablets, PCs/Macs, smart TVs from Sony/Samsung/Vizio, and streaming devices like Roku, Amazon Fire, Apple TV, Chromecast, Xbox, etc. It's free and no sign up is required. I had no trouble downloading it to my Roku. Was up and watching in a matter of minutes.

The defense gave up 16 points, not counting the kickoff return. That's fewer points than Alabama gave up against Colorado State today.

They also got lucky that a field goal was blocked and the QB fumbled at the goal line. It was a bad performance based on who the opponent was.

California just held Ole Miss to 16 points and beat them 27-16. They're 3-0 now.

The defense still sucks like a boss.

Surratt will be really good in a few years, like scary good. Brown and Carter are also going to be very good. I think the offense will definitely improve. It might even improve a lot this season.

Take a peek at next year's schedule. If the offense develops the way it should then next year could the beginning of something special. Its setup perfectly for us. Syracuse as the 2nd cross division opponent, and all of the right games are at home, with the toughest away game being Miami who traditionally does not have much of a home field advantage. That also means we get an ideal ACC schedule for 2020 (Surratt and Carter's SR season) with the same games at home, and BC as our 2nd cross division game. And that's coming off of a 2019 season where they would have the experience of opening with USuCk again, and playing Clemson at home.

Its important we recruit well on defense the next two years so that we can improve personnel and depth on that side of the ball. If the defense can even be average next year then we should win ten games. Scary good is the perfect way to describe how good Surratt could be as soon as next year. Start thinking about his junior/senior year and he could be a legitimate Heisman candidate. Carter and Brown are the perfect one-two punch at tailback and will wear down defenses while staying fresh because of the rotation. Throw in ARW and some other young talent that will hopefully develop this year at WR and the future starts to look really bright for the Carolina offense. A defense to complement that offense would make us a playoff contender again.

I appreciate your positivity, but unless something changes, I just don't see our defense as ever being good enough to get us there.

It was good enough to get us close in 2016, and even then it wasn't very good.

I really wasn't even being positive. I'm not saying that I think we will build a great defense, just pointing out how urgently we need the defensive unit to improve so that we can take the next step as a program.

This is a perfect encapsulation of the glass-half-empty attitude that pervades our fan base.

Right. Carolina was in position to repeat as Coastal Division champions last season. All we had to do was beat Moo and dook -- two teams who certainly looked inferior on paper -- but we blew it. We've been a pretty good team despite how poorly our defenses have played. Imagine if the defense were just average.

True, but the offense is Larry's baby. Is he ever going to care enough about the D, where the talent and depth, and most importantly - COACHING - will be high enough of a priority to get us to just a level of average? I sure hope so. It's frustrating to watch, especially when playing better teams, and knowing we have to score 45+ points just to give ourselves a chance.

He has already shown he cares. He got Chizik here for a couple of years. I'm sure Larry would of preferred he stayed. We've recruited the talent and we go after the top guys in the state. We aren't landing them, but it's not because Larry doesn't want them.

I agree, it's frustrating. We've regressed defensively this year and if we aren't careful, it could become a culture we don't want on that side of the ball as it was a few years ago. I just don't think it's all on Fedora however. He has tried to improve the pieces. It just hasn't worked in our favor. I still haven't lost confidence in him yet.

It's just honesty. You can't just look at the score to determine how well the defense (or offense) played. You're a stats guy. You should know that. At least we got a win though. We are right where I thought we would be.

And if we had success like that in back to back seasons we would have seen a noticeable uptick in recruiting on both sides of the ball.

An average defense would have been more than enough to get the job done. Especially when you factor the increase in offensive production once the defense can actually get itself off of the field on occasion.
