OOTB Carolina football discussion thread

When you're 1-2 and staring yet another disappointing season out of many in the face, there aren't going to be very many positive comments.

UNC blocked a field goal and forced a goal-line fumble. Rather than credit the Heels for making two outstanding defensive plays, you described the events as "lucky." That's the very definition of negative.
The replay I saw showed that it was the QB dropping the ball, not it being forced out. I'll admit that I was watching it on my phone, so it's possible I missed us causing it. The FG was kicked low, it would have been pathetic for us not to have blocked it. Even the announcers said it was low.

Wrong on both counts. Myles Dorn forced the fumble and is credited as such in the box score. Tyler Powell penetrated so far into the backfield that he almost blocked the kick with his face. Here's your chance to cut your losses.

The box score doesn't change what I saw. People are created for things all the time when they really shouldn't have been, but like I said my view wasn't the best. If you have a better view let me know and I'll watch it. If it looks like we forced it out, then I'll admit it. That picture doesn't show the angel of the kick either. Regardless, even if I give you those two plays I didn't see much to make me feel better about the defense

I thought the D looked pretty good early on. ODU's only first half score was the kick return. So while we were playing a non-P5 school, they had four 3-and-outs, two turnovers, and only one sustained drive. If Clemson or FSU handled the first half against the Monarchs similarly, everyone would think it was a great effort.

The second half we definitely didn't look as good but it happens when you have a 30 point lead.

Next week will be a huge game if we are to have any hope of a decent season.

That's a fair assessment. I guess the way they played the second half bothered me. The attitude of letting up just because you're ahead is one that can cost you down the road. Especially against a better opponent.

This is your response? You didn't see it so it didn't happen? Willful ignorance is powerful stuff.

People are created for things all the time when they really shouldn't have been....
Please cite one instance where this has happened. As someone who has actually charted thousands of plays, I can assure you that the box score is incredibly reliable.

If you have a better view let me know and I'll watch it.
Hey, I just had a crazy thought. Maybe you should seek out a better view before you start arguing your point. Now, if only there were websites that provided free highlights* from the game....

If it looks like we forced it out, then I'll admit it.
Or, you could trust the guy who watches games (and highlights and replays!) with a far more discerning eye than you do. This is a much better option than arguing about it -- and disavowing the box score -- without first bothering to check whether your recollection of events is in fact accurate. Spoiler Alert 1: it's not.

That picture doesn't show the angel of the kick either.
What are you, the Warren Commission? Hey, you know what does show the angle of the kick? The highlights!* And while you're watching them, you can re-think your claim that the announcers said the kick was low. Spoiler Alert 2: they didn't.

Regardless, even if I give you those two plays I didn't see much to make me feel better about the defense
Judging by your inane criticisms, that doesn't surprise me at all.

* I could create screen grabs or gifs to make my point, but I'm not wasting any more time on this moronic discussion. You're a malcontent. Just own it and shut up already. If you respond to me, you're going on ignore forever.

They were substituting liberally in the second half. We have some serious injury issues on both sides of the ball.
Honestly I wasn't paying close enough attention in the 2nd half to notice the substitutions, so that makes sense. I thought the first half effort was solid. Hope to see more of that next week.

The first half was very good.

And, I forgot to thank @Raising Heel for providing the links on THB to watch it. I watched it on the Twitter page. Gracias for that effort.

Well cal looks pretty good so that loss may not be as bad as i feared. But clemson completely shutting down an offense that rolled up 700yds and still just gained 12 yds on a tackle dive against us as i type shows the gulf between us and top 10 caliber teams. Hard to take anything from the odu game except "yay a win" and that Brown could be pretty good. Strange thet odu had little problem containing our return man when lousiville couldnt though. But they still moved the ball way too easily in the air against us.

Is it just me or have teams had way more success this season and previous with underneath crossing patterns against us than is normal? I mean for chrissakes its like they run across and theres noone even in the frame on the replay.

The Clemson game will prove to be the exception and not the rule for Jackson. He's the real deal.

I don't think it's just you. Part of the problem in the Louisville game is we often had the wrong defensive personnel. A nickle defense against a 4-WR set, for example. Louisville also ran some 5-WR sets against our dime defense, which invariably resulted in a LB trying to cover a WR in space. Petrino schemed us to death and Lamar Jackson did what he does.

Anybody notice the number of people in the stands in that clip? And Boise State has a pretty good football tradition. Obviously Carolina isn't the only school having problems getting butts in the seats.

...I still haven't lost confidence in him yet.
Let me get back to you guys on this. Kidding. Sort of. Some inexplicable stuff today though.

Defensively we were better. We did well in the red zone but gave up some head-scratchers between the 20's. We just seem to have a knack of allowing plays at times where we need to make stops the most. It has to be crushing to our guys confidence. But overall, a much better job today on D. We only gave up 388 yards total (great for this D) and 20 points (also great for this D).

Offensively, we were Jekyll and Hyde. Surratt did some really good things and some really not so good things. We are going to have to live with that kind of stuff this year however, as it comes with breaking in a young QB. He'll get more consistent with additional time. Play calling ranged from great (flea-flicker, designed QB runs, etc.) to horrid (consecutive Carter running play late in the 3rd after first time achieved a 4 yard loss, pass plays on 3rd down with routes designed for less yards than 1st down marker, etc.).

This team is going to have to work hard to get wins. With the number of injuries we have, including today, it's not going to get easier. Guys are going to have to step up. But as usual, I will still cheer us on, expecting to win every game we play.

Me too, Hope springs eternal. But hope is fighting an ever growing realization that Fed isn't going to make us a top 25 program. His failure to realize that defense and fundamentals are the key, will be his undoing. He's milked us for several million dollars so he's all to the good regardless. If he can find a better gig, good for him. I wish him no ill will, I just wish him gone.

I wanna win this shit. I know our defense is depleted. I know what my eyes saw Saturday. But we've come too far as a program to fall back to mediocrity. UNC Football is starting to light a fire in my gut. Chazz wins the game.
