Harris has always been bad. He isn't going to just all of a sudden start being good. Never wanted him here.

I'm sticking with my pledge to take the favored team and whatever points they give up for my predictions for the rest of the season.

I'm having serious doubts about whether or not Fedora can turn this program around in any reasonable time frame. Next year's recruiting class is hardly world beating, and there's no guarantee of how any of these guys will recover from the serious injuries.

The bonehead coaching errors are going to become more and more costly as the Coastal division gets tougher. Miami and Va Tech are on the rise again, and all roads still go through Clemson and FSU for an conference championship.

Play-calling is terrible, fundamentals are terrible, guys are regularly out of position, ect. All the crippling injuries aside this is a very poorly coached football team. Fedora and his staff either need to step things up on their end, or we need to go in a different direction. I have been a strong defender of his since he came to Chapel Hill. I don't know how much longer that is going to last.

I'm trying to keep the injuries in mind as a big contributor to this shit storm of a season, but....

why the hell would you start Harris at this point? (Apparently he had a better week of practice). If Chaz is the future then he needs all the game experience he can get. Or give the other youngsters a chance. Harris provides nothing in regards to the future and most importantly ... he is not good. The dude should not be allowed to throw the ball more than 10 yards downfield.

If Chazz is the future we're screwed.

Trying not to overreact on the kid -- because there's so many things going wrong this season -- but I tend to agree. It's just a gut feel I have.

I think Jace Ruder should (and will) come to Chapel Hill next year with the mindset of "I'm going to start this year."

Also, @uncboy10 and others (gonna tag @ticket2ride04 too because I'm unsure how much he read of these boards before he recently became a board regular again here and on premium, so I'm not sure if he thinks I'm a Fedora basher or not...), I know it's hard, but we really have to remember that ZERO has gone right this season and it's really, really hard to draw any conclusions about much of anything this season, be it coaches, players, program future, etc. (Yes, I know I just did that on Surratt. I'm a hypocrite sometimes lol). So much has gone wrong and IS wrong this season, that's it hard to pass much judgement. On the other hand, though, with each loss stacking up, it's only natural for all of us to get more and more disgusted with things and to turn on Fedora. It's only human for us to do that because we care so much about this program. I'm seeing guys like @uncboy10 who are huge Fedora supporters now losing faith in Fedora simply because this season is such a disaster. I would encourage everyone to hold off on judgement, though. I know it's tough.

Nothing looks or seems great right now because of the record and because of the sheer expanse of injuries. Chazz isn't getting as meaningful reps as he could because his OL can't pass protect for more than 2 seconds. That's the crux of the whole issue. Because the OL can't protect, the coaches can't call anything creative, Chazz doesn't have time to practice going through his progressions because he's constantly pressured, and when DOES get time in the pocket, he has such happy feet and doesn't expect to get protection that he bolts too early instead of climbing the pocket.

It's just truly turned into a lost year. A select few players are getting meaningful, quality reps (Michael Carter for instance). But by and large, it's just a lost year. Hopefully the entirety of the experience stiffens the resolve of the team and makes them hungrier in future seasons, but in terms of development, it's tough. Those are just my thoughts on it all. I actually thought the coaches put the players in every opportunity to win against Virginia. We can obviously debate the benching of Surratt, but beyond that, I thought the coaches had a good game plan in terms of relying heavily on the run. On running plays, Harris did a good job of deciding when to keep and when to hand to the back. And the defense played great overall, although tackling is still really really bad.

Those are my thoughts.

Honestly, I'm not losing faith because of the results on the field. I understand how difficult it is to win football games with the number of injuries we've had this year. But this coaching staff repeatedly makes bone headed decisions, and we aren't going to be able to compete for the Coastal in the next five years if that doesn't stop. How many games have we lost under Fed simply because of ridiculous coaching mistakes?

I don't necessarily disagree, but I will counter with "how many games have we won specifically because Fed made an awesome, game-changing call" ? Fedora wins because of his system and because of the players he recruits. And that is absolutely NOT a criticism by any means. I can think of a certain basketball coach who has won us three national titles who relies on his system as well for success.

Jumping in, I think Chazz is going to be fine. If Jace sets the world on fire, then so be it. But I think Chazz will be much improved next year.

@uncboy10 , don’t take this the wrong way but every fan base says this about their coach. 2 years ago we bitched about Fedora right up until we were an onside recovery from the playoff. He didn’t forget how to coach. Those were veteran teams with very few injuries.

Just a few years ago, many were calling for Roy to hang it up. The game passed him by. He stuck to his system and went to back to back FF4s and could easily have had b2b titles.

Fedora is a fine coach. His offense is different so when we struggle, people clamor for smash mouth football. Personally, I don’t want to go back to the days of Shoop.

Lastly, coaching football at any level is hard. The Patriots have a historically bad defense. Clemson, Washington, and WSU all just lost to inferior teams. Outside of Bama, no one is consistently excellent

We probably would have been in the playoff even with a loss against Clemson, if we don't abandon the run in the red zone against USuCk, and lay a goose egg on offense in the second half.

I'm not suggesting that we should fire Fed, unless there is a legit big time coach that wants to come to Chapel Hill. But our teams routinely display poor fundamentals, poor play calling, and poor clock/field management. All of that is on the coaching staff. They need to make improvements. If you listen to Fed's press conferences it sounds like he would agree with me on that point at least.

Hopefully we will see an uptick in recruiting in the next few years now that the NCAA cloud has finally blown over. The more talent we can put on the roster, the less pressure there will be on the coaches.

Comparing Fed to Roy is ridiculous.

Also I've never complained about Fed's system. I love the no-huddle spread offense.

We don't agree on much politically, but we're in sync on UNC football. When a D1 coach consistently makes boneheaded mistakes in crucial situations that cost us games, I lose faith in his ability to maximize our talent. We are never going to win the ACC on sheer talent, we have to be fundamentally sound and not beat ourselves. This does not describe UNC football under Fed. At all.

Again, you guys make the same complaints that every fan base makes around the country. Even Bama. There aren’t 15 better (established) coaches in the country than Fedora. Too many UNC fans are dismissing the handcuffs Larry has been coaching with.

Saban, Dabo, Meyer, Harbaugh, Jimbo, Petersen, Patterson, Snyder, Shaw, Gundy, Petrino, James Franklin, Dantonio, Richt, Leach...

Gundy? No way. I like the guy but no.

Snyder? Ha. No.

Leach? What has he won?

Shaw? Maybe. He hasn’t really won anything without the team/players Harbaugh left him.

I do think the rest are better though. It’s funny that you mention D’Antonio who only mustered 3 wins last year. All coaches go through their troubles.

Regarding Saban, Meyer, Harbaugh and Dabo - all great coaches but they have programs committed to football as well.

Fair enough. Let's see what he does the next couple of years.
Even if we had no injuries, UNC still does not have 85 scholarship players. The NCAA recruiting sanctions followed by the NCAA cloud coupled with our poor fan support makes it an uphill battle.

Fedora would kill it at a place like A&M with those recruits and fan support.

What has Fed won? A few Coastal division championships. That's it. No major bowl wins or a conference championship at UNC.

Saban, Meyer, and Harbaugh are objectively far better coaches than Fed. If you can't concede that, then I can't take you seriously.

Again, I've liked Fed the entire time he's been here. I've defended him as much or more than anyone over on the free board. But he is not in that league. I'd love for him to one day get there, but as of today he's not even close.
