OOTB Carolina football discussion thread

As long as we are talking about coaches who won't be hired at UNC, I'm all for bringing back Butch. If he was still here I truly believe we would be a top 15 program right now. Also, Mack Brown is only 66.

I'm 100000000000% for bringing Butch Davis back, but you know that shit ain't gonna happen.

As for Mack, I'm shocked Tennessee isn't considering him, even as a stopgap for a few seasons. I think he's too old to be effective at Carolina, but Lord knows we could do worse. Has he been gone too long to rekindle his relationships with high school coaches in N.C.? They are a notoriously fickle (read: whiny) bunch.

Sort of a combo between a dick and a twink

At the rate they are going, they might have to ask at some point because no one wants to coach there.

I think he would have enough street creed given his success. From what I understand he's kept a close relationship with people in NC, so they could vouch for him. I know Roy certainly would.

For Gundy, OK State to UT seems like a lateral move unless there's a massive pay raise involved.

BTW, this past week's games and this week's conference championship games are yet another reason 4 is the perfect number for the CFP. The CGs are basically play-in games.

SECCG: Literally a winner-takes-the-spot game. Loser is out.
ACCCG: Win-and-they're-in for Clemson. Must-win-and-hope-for-help for Miami
B1GCG: Win-and-they're-in for Wisconsin. tOSU is in same situation as Miami.
B12CG: Win-and-they're-in for Oklahoma.

Then, based on CG results, Alabama and/or Ohio State could sneak in.

This statement is not so much insensitive as it is retarded.

I mean really, you should make "Black people love UNC" your sig line.
I couldn't think of a PC way to say it, but it's true. Do you disagree? It's obviously much more true on the basketball side, but it still spills over to football too.

If Clemson, OU, and Wisconsin win their respective games - you agree that Bama is out?

I think I already know the answer to this one, but if OSU and Miami both win - would you put Bama in over either of them?

Yes, Bama is 100% out in that scenario, with Clemson, OU, Wisconsin, and UGA/Auburn as the four.

That's a tough one. Are you asking what I would do or what the committee would do? I think Miami is the wildcard in that situation. Does the committee really consider them good enough, even as a 1-win conference champion to grab that fourth spot? Clemson would be their best win. Their Notre Dame win is good but is soured by ND's loss to Stanford (gives them 3 losses, right?).

I really don't think the committee puts Ohio State in, even if the Buckeyes win. I mean, their two losses are awful. The 31-point blow out to a 7-5 Iowa is awful, and they lost directly to Oklahoma who makes the playoff with a win OR looks not as good with a loss to TCU. I think tOSU is screwed.

I have a hunch we are heading for full-blown chaos. I think TCU takes down Oklahoma. I thought Clemson would struggle with SCar, but after watching that game, I'm not convinced Clemson will beat Miami. Ohio State has a great chance of beating Wisconsin. Who knows!!

tl;dr version @Hark_The_Sound_2010 I think there's a very limited number of scenarios that put Alabama in the playoff. Alabama has a really, really poor resume this year. No Top 15 wins. Best win is at Mississippi State and hosting LSU. Toughest teams they faced, they lost to, albeit on the road.

I think Ohio State needs to squeak by Wisconsin in an ugly game and Auburn needs to beat UGA. I think that's the only way Bama sneaks in, and I'm fine with that. Bama isn't deserving this season, just like Miami isn't deserving, based on the eye test. IMO.

If Miami beats Clemson they deserve to get in. A one loss ACC champ will always get in as long as the conference is as strong as it is now.

Miami deserves it based on their resume, but based on the "eye test," they don't deserve it at all. Their QB blows. Chazz Surratt is better than Rozier.

Hiring Houston to come here would scare me. I guess the London to Virginia hire is too fresh in my memory. Maybe it's the fact their last names are also names of cities.:)

Yeah I don't like it either, as I'm sure you read on the thread on premium. But enough people whose knowledge I respect have brought his name up, so I threw him on there. In reality, he should be last on my list.

This is what I'm rooting for, personally. It would create additional pressure to expand the playoffs to 8, 12, or even 16 teams.
I heard a really compelling argument for 16 team playoff. It would all but guarantee the best team wins, drive a ton of revenue, and give fans a couple extra great games.

Three excellent points in its favor. There are few arguments against it, and I personally find the "it cheapens the regular season" argument unconvincing.

Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports is a bit of a dweeb -- like other sports writers, his corporate overlords often force him to take inflammatory stances on certain topics -- but he does an annual "what if" article in favor of an 8- or 16-team playoff. Here's the 16-team article from 2010 and the 8-team article from last year. It's pretty tantalizing to think about all the incredible games we could see to cap off college football season with a bang. It would be like all the excitement of March Madness condensed into a handful of games.

The biggest advantage to me is it really answers the strength of conference argument. Well that, and meaningful games. I hate the bowl structure now. It’s antiquated and meaningless

We already have a defacto 6/8 team playoff with the conference championship games. Yeah, TCU and the Pac-12 schools have no shot, but for Oklahoma, both SEC teams, and both ACC teams, it's a playoff game. Win and advance, lose and go home.

Moving to an 8- or 16-team playoff would make conference championship games virtually meaningless, except for a year when a 7-5 team sneaks its way in to the conference championship game and can win its way into the playoff. I would imagine the devaluing of their championship games wouldn't please the conferences.

Tell that to 2016 Penn State, who won the Big Ten Championship and beat Ohio State head to head but was relegated to the Rose Bowl. OSU -- who didn't even make their conference championship game -- was gifted a playoff berth.

The bowl system is the biggest obstacle to an expanded playoff. Too many people lining their pockets at the expenses of the schools, most of which lose money through the current post-season format. Stupidest thing the NCAA has ever done (and that's saying something) was to outsource its most lucrative product.
