I don't know if the particular tax law is a good and fair one, but it doesn't matter. What matters is that there isn't a single dipstick here or on the NYT who wouldn't have taken advantage of it. And there isn't a single dipstick here or on the NYT who would give their entire salary to charity.

The Dems had a talking point ready to go either way on this one. If he paid a ton of taxes "See, he's an out of touch billionaire! Down with the 1%!" If he paid very little taxes "See, he's a failed businessman!!"
He certainly bends the tax code to it's fullest extent with write-offs and carryforward losses, there's no doubt about that. If what he did was illegal, then prosecute him. If it isn't illegal, then STFU about it, and work to change the tax code if you want.
It was a cute effort by the clearly unbiased and neutral NYT to drop this the week of the first debate. We'll see if Biden can remember it long enough to make it a talking point on Tuesday.

Kinda my point. I don’t think anyone rational thought his tax returns would show something illegal; instead he was hiding them because he isn’t this amazing businessman image that he rode to election victory.
Also, many would argue managerial acumen is a top 3 trait needed to be a good modern President.
Nobody is surprised by the returns. I think most Americans would be glad they are out there finally when he had no actual reason to be hiding them for 5 years now.
Nobody is paying Joe Biden of all people to give a speech and I don't think his book generated that kind of revenue, even if 100% of proceeds went to him as compensation.

We all know Trump uses CPAs for his returns so we can pretty much be sure that he is only maximizing his leverage, not breaking any laws. And if laws were broken, that would come back on the CPAs, not Trump unless he was supplying false data.

I agree. I haven’t found anything yet that surprises me. Taking the Returns as a whole it looks like his net worth is quite a bit less than I expected. I don’t think anyone thought he was worth billions like he clams but it appears if he had to sell his assets and pay all his debts he would have very little if any left. He was born on 3rd base and through hard work and his great mind he has clawed his way to 1st base. If he had taKen what he got from his dad and put it in a S&P 500 index fund and sat on his ass and done nothing he really would be a billionaire now. He is no businessman by any measure.
