Oh, I believe the numbers, although I would imagine that the book deal was not 100% up front, although I suppose it could have been. But I also think he was compensated for work never performed, which is fraud. The Dems had a talking point ready to go either way on this one. If he paid a ton of taxes "See, he's an out of touch billionaire! Down with the 1%!" If he paid very little taxes "See, he's a failed businessman!!"

He certainly bends the tax code to it's fullest extent with write-offs and carryforward losses, there's no doubt about that. If what he did was illegal, then prosecute him. If it isn't illegal, then STFU about it, and work to change the tax code if you want.

It was a cute effort by the clearly unbiased and neutral NYT to drop this the week of the first debate. We'll see if Biden can remember it long enough to make it a talking point on Tuesday.
