Thanks! So far so good. It's nice to be anchored in one place for a week. Hot as blazes here but I hit the pool and the beach today, plus squeezed in a nap for good measure. Here's an unexpected benefit of traveling solo: no waiting at the restaurant. I'm at Doc Ford's for dinner at there's a half hour wait. Me, I just stroll up to the bar and have a drink in my hand a couple minutes later.

Great sounds like you're having fun

Just been busy enjoying my time off, fellas. No need to alert the police.

By the way, finally got that Cuban sandwich from the place across the street and it was un-freaking-believable. Almost got another for lunch again today but decided to keep trying some new stuff. I have to get another one before I leave though. East End Deli FTW.

All that sounds great, but what we really need to know is when are you going to make your pick for the Simpsons in the TV show tournament?

I vacation to Isle of Palms last week. Not too shabby. That place is heaven on earth. And the Cuban sammich from The Dinghy is manna.

Great place for a vacation IMO.
My family owns property there. I know it's just the first of May, so it's not beach season yet, but I went to the beach Sunday - Wednesday of last week and could only see 7 people as far as the eye could see in either direction, and none within 500 yards of me. And it was low 80s with a light breeze. Perfect bocce ball conditions.

Stranded on Sanibel after the dog locked him out of the hotel room.

That was actually in Tavares, FL. I visited my stepmom for a couple days and helped her with some projects around the house. As a thank you, she took me out to dinner my last night there. Problem with that is Niam knows how to open doors with handles like the one in my hotel room. Normally I'd just put something in front of the door, but you can only do that from the inside. He couldn't get the door all the way open -- it weighed too much -- but he jostled it enough to engage the latch.

Have to admit I panicked a bit when I couldn't get into the room. And of course he and his sister Olivia were on the inside getting panicky themselves. I tried using my room key to pry it open several times with no luck. Went down to the front desk to ask whether they had a way to defeat the latch mechanism. Fortunately they did, but even that took a few attempts. When we finally got the door open, that little f***er took off down the hall and kept running away from us when we tried to herd him back into the room. I alternately love and hate that kid, lol.

So, is a full trip report in the future?
It's a fairly short story, really. I rented a relatively small unit in a double duplex but it was fine for me and my two dogs. Bonus was a huge screen porch that wasn't mentioned in the listing. The four units share a pool. It was only me and another couple in the other duplex, which basically meant I had the pool to myself all week. Plus nobody next door, which was nice.

Went to the beach, hung at the pool, visited Edison & Ford Winter Estates, and went kayaking (see above). That was basically the whole week. Had a disappointing restaurant experience the first night but made up for it the rest of the trip. I ate lunch every day at one of the two restaurants that were next door to my rental -- East End Deli and Lighthouse Cafe. There was also an ice cream joint next door so of course I had to hit that as well.

My favorite three things I ate were the aforementioned Cuban sandwiches at East End Deli, the Shrimp Ceviche Cocktail at Doc Fords, and the Salmon Oscar (salmon stuffed with crab meat) at Cips Place. Cips Place is a pretty nice joint but surprisingly allowed dogs on their patio, so my fur kids came with me that night. They behaved thank goodness.

Made my way to Captiva Island on the last evening there. Tried to go to Mucky Duck with my dogs, but the tables were full and the staff was less than helpful. The vibe kind of sucked anyway because it was a free-for-all for seating and there was a guy on the patio doing bad covers at about 100 decibels. We ended up at a place called RC Otters up the street that was much more chill. Ran into a couple from Winston-Salem there. Small world. Oh, and I swung by the Bubble Room on my way home to grab a piece of cake to go. That place is a trip!

ETA: Thanks again to you guys for the suggestion and the votes. Definitely a fun way to plan a vacation!

Sounds like a great trip. I was supposed to go to South Seas Plantation in Captiva with family over Memorial day, but my wife signed up our daughter for a week of Surfing lessons in Daytona (near where we live) starting on Memorial Day. So we probably won't make it this year.
