I miss the days where we watched players develop and get better for four straight years. I’ve not seen a player get better under Hubert, but I sure have seen transfers and players regress.

As bad as Caleb is, he's a much better player now than he was as a freshman. RJ is a thousand times better than he was as a freshman. I think Leaky got better too. He went from one of the worst offensive basketball players you've ever seen to just a bad offensive player. I'll also say... I don't think I saw Brady Manek ever be better at Oklahoma than he was in his one year at UNC.

Look, I don't know if you credit natural experience for players individually getting better. If you hate Hubert, then you probably won't give him credit. But if that progression happened under Roy, I bet a lot of people would credit Roy.

5? No way you can get 5 players to come in here thinking they are going to get time, with at least 6-7 guys in place already.
That would be far fetched if Roy was still coaching, but Hubert has given the fanbase and possible portal player ZERO reason to believe he will play anyone meaningful min beyond 7-9 players.
We can argue what should tske place, or what is " likely" to take place.
It is very unlikely Hubert is going to all of a sudden play a 10-12 man rotation.

You seem to assume the current guys are locked into the rotation. I don't see any of Trimble, Dunn, High playing in Hubert's ideal world. So they could already be our 11th, 12th, and 13th guys.

We need a starting 2-3-4, and then another backup shooter 2/3 and a backup big. I also think Cadeau will reclass at a minimum -- which pushes RJ off ball, but then we still need a shooter 6th man like Timberlake. We'll add 5 more guys.

I think a 4th spot could be secured by a " project" or legacy player that doesn't expext any time.
I can't fathom 5 portal players without 1-2 more defections to follow, which woukd once again put us at the same number I said we would be at. 11-12 schollys max before walkons claimed the remainder.

I am in favor of Cadeau reclassing, and I would alter my projections if that came to be. I think we would have another player leave if that is the case. Final number would remain the same though.

Portal guys will look at incumbent players and think they have an innate advantage regardless if this is fact or not.
Not only that, they will keep in mind any other portal guys coming too, and consider the min they might lose to them.
Anybody that thinks it is going to be easy to convince 5 portal players to use their last " Free pass" transfer to come to a place that they may or may not play at is fooling yourselves.
To be frank, there are not more than a few fits in the portal for Carolina right now. I expect that to change, but getting them to come is another story.
There is a whole lotta programs looking to do the same thing as us.

Who is selecting? Carolina? Or the portal players? Gotta be mutual.
Players have many more options yhan the teams do.
Carolina is sekecting at the top of the foid chain and can't/wont want inferior players. Players can play down further if they are not valued as high as they think they should be valued.
We are in a very precarious position.

I don't think there are currently many players that are good enough to make an impact on our team.
There are some very intriguing players that could be starting 5 men........ Right now in my mind the 5 spot is the most represented position in the portal with impact players. That is also Bacots positiin and Jalens primary reserve position as well.

Two way wing -- this IMO will hopefully be our best portal addition, would really like a dynamic athlete here given the rest of the roster
Stretch 4 - can be a more limited athlete but needs to be a shooter

Washington
Dunn if he can improve his shooting

Deep bench:
Trimble barring major shooting improvements
Project big from the portal - playing with fire going with just the oft injured Washington as only capable backup

Sorry, I re-read your post again. I missed your backup 5 project getting you to 13 scholly. I still think adding beyond a 3rd portal player pushes another current player out. We can agree or disagree if that SHOULD happen, but I think the result is that IT WILL happen.

It's going to be tough on coaches trying to balance between the portal, and incoming freshman. Have to agree that most players do not want to become bench players and wait their turn. The landscape has changed, and if you have noticed during the tournament team were not going to their bench a lot unless a player was in foul trouble. Filling out a roster each year is going to be stressful on all the coaches, would not want to be in their position.

We need wings most of all. But college basketball is significantly watered down as of late. Recruiting analysis is at an all time low where they focus more on length and athleticism than actual basketball IQ, defense, and ability to score.

And if they do pan out in analysis, those recruits leave after a year anyways leaving the door a revolving door that makes it unable to create a program and culture necessary to sustain at a high level. Scheyer as lame as he is said Duke will be adjusting their recruiting style, and I don't blame him. We have feasted this past decade with continuity while Kentucky and Duke fooled themselves chasing prima donnas. We need to stop becoming that revolving door ourselves with the portal and chasing as well. Hopefully we get our cupboard to that point again. It's gonna be hard with the portal though able to poach half your team at any point, but it is what needs to be done.
