Rawle Alkins

Cracks me up when you say we shouldn't encourage this. Same people who want Michael to just happen to be at the gym when a recruit visits. It's no different.

I'm not a kid and have 3 kids of my own under 12. I say this to let you know that I have no idea who J. Cole is and I don't care. He is a fan and well known to kids college age. Doesn't hurt to have him at games being seen.

I'm not saying we should ban the guy from games. If he wants to be a part of the UNC experience, I welcome him...along with anyone else that's wants in on it, famous or not. I'm just saying that we don't need to break our necks to bring him into the fold. If it happens naturally and the kids like that sort of thing, then great. But it's about UNC. We don't want to turn this into the J.Cole show with the Tar Heels as back up dancers which from the outside looks like the Drake takeover over UK basketball.

I'd also like to nominate this thread for the biggest hijack in the history of message boards. I'm not throwing stones because I was a large reason for the hijack. But can we please move this discussion of whack rappers to OOTB and leave this thread for Alkins discussion. Thanks.

In all seriousness, I never get to discuss rap music on OOTB. No one except chickenhunter has any clue about rap music over there. So I would certainly participate in a thread on the subject if someone wanted to engage.

We are better than that. That's the point. We're better than having to take a page out of Cal's playbook. I think the dribble drive offense that Cal runs that essentially lets players freestyle on the court is also a big selling point to OAD types. Are you in favor of Roy adopting that style of play? I mean, hey, it works, right?

Have you seen the movie Oh Brother Where Art Thou? If you have, you'll understand the relevance of this clip. If not, let me set the scene. Pappy is running for public office against Stokes. Stokes' campaign is using a midget as his sidekick. Here in this clip, Pappy is talking to his campaign people about how they can get back in the race. Pappy's nephew suggest they go out and find a shorter midget. And Pappy gets irate and says "we'll look like a bunch of Johnny-come-latelys". Hilarious clip.

I apologize for questioning your fandom. You seem to be a good fan and I'm never in the business of telling someone how they have to support the team. But I am in the business of arguing what's good and what ain't for the program in general (I'm also in the business of arguing about rap music as I grew up in the golden age of hip hop). You and I clearly have two different ideas on that and I guess that's fine. But from my standpoint, us attempting to replicate someone else's recruiting process seems weak. And I think we're better than that. Furthermore, I also see it as pointless as I don't believe Drake's involvement with UK is doing much. Cal's success is based on his ability to get kids that need instant gratification to the league immediately. His style and everything about Cal is built on that and enables that. Roy is not like that. Roy's system is not like that. So IMO, we could have Nas writing songs about the Tar Heels and it wouldn't make basketball recruits start falling over themselves to play for us. (You do know who Nas is, right?)
Oh my god you used "midget" the PCers(of which I am not) are doing their Fred Sanford dance as we speak.

slinger I just did NOT have you as the rap type

Rock and Roll, country ,yeah..... rap NO way!!!!

I was a certified rap head back in the day. I still listen to it somewhat frequently - when I'm working out or doing yard work. But with kids I can't listen to it when they're around.

I've always said that while rap music is created largely by young blacks growing up in the struggle, it shouldn't be marketed to young blacks growing up in the struggle. You wouldn't show the movie Scarface at a Cuban refugee camp, would you? Same principle here. I can see rap music for what it is - entertainment. Just like fictional movies. But young blacks that grow up in the circumstances that are often discussed through rap music see it more as a blueprint for life. I never allowed rap music to change who I was - a middle class white boy with strong guidance and role modeling in my life. And because of that, I never saw it as a negative influence in my life.

As for all the other genres you mentioned, I listen to them all. If I put my iPhone on shuffle, I may have Merle Haggard followed by EPMD followed by Adrea Bocelli followed by Hall & Oates followed by Bob Dylan. There's no telling with me.

Those two cases are entitely different. Mainly because using a famous person as a selling point is not a page from Cal's playbook. Teams have used their famous fanbases long before Cal even coached at Kentucky. I understand that we are not like everyone else, but I also agree with what TPFKAPFS said, this is a huge advantage in our favor. We would be crazy not to use this to our favor. Which it looks like Roy is doing.

Besides, compared to rappers like Wayne or Jay-Z (who'd probably only get us an infraction with the NCAA like he did at Kentucky), J. Cole would be a much better step up for our program.

Well, im glad to hear you know your rap music. Rare case these days. But you could be right. Maybe a famous person in our corner doesn't help us. It's yet to really be proven that Drake is any factor in recruiting. Honestly, i think it just gives us that sort of "swagger" that it seems we've long been missing. (i honestly hate that word, but i am lacking a good synonym for it) However, I do know 3 recruits we missed out on were attending a J. Cole concert before their commitment date. 2 of them were in-state targets. Not saying he would have influenced their decision, but it sure as hell wouldn't hurt.

I don't think I could call myself a hip hop fan without knowing the greatest lyricist ever though.

Second this. Taking my share of the blame as well.

I dont think I've ever noticed the off topic forum. Its usually straight to the football or basketball for me.

Wow,...I used a clip of Oh Brother Where Art Thou and discussed the merits of Nas rapping about the Tar Heels in the same post. I should win a prize or something.
Damnit, I was going all in on dropping the reform line from OBWAT until I saw yours. "Maybe we should get us some."

Yes, Lil' Wayne is somewhat sucky. Compare him to real rap, rap where the lyrics counted, not the background beat. 2Pac, NWA, Eric B, Rakim, Eric Sermon, Eminem, Big Daddy Kane, etc. You cannot compare clowns like Drake and Wayne to these guys.....

Spot on right there!!! Nothing these days compares to the good ole days of rap!

Clint doing a 4 part series on him...hope this means good news for us...man I need premium!!!
Was thinking about this when I saw the front page.
Sure hope Clint isn't jumping at shadows. 4 part series, you'd want him to be a strong lean.
After the last few years I'm not counting on, nor sweating on any kid playing for the Heels till they suit up in November!

If a coaching staff decided to never do anything that another coach first did then there wouldn't be anything to do. I don't see it as copying nor replicating Coach Cal. I see it as there is a famous artist that college age kids like and he likes our school.... we would be dumb not to invite him to games and the locker room. Use the resources you have and he sounds like he is one!

Good time to use that "trial period". Clint is the best at what he does.

Would love to read about Rawle, but does free trial here still require a credit card? I NEVER do free trials that require a credit card up front.

And PLEASE, will those talking music form a thread elsewhere and take the music talk there.

Agreed. Because I'm the type of guy they're counting on - the type that will sign up for a free trial and then forget to cancel it. No way I'm falling for that.

For the record, while I am a culprit in hijacking the thread, I did own up to it and suggest the same - that we take music discussion to OOTB.

I will post in that thread if someone will start it.

I am really really hoping Rawle decides to come to UNC. I think it would be an amazing fit for both parties.

Well, if the point of Clint's 4-part foray was try to say Clifton has reformed, well sorry, I an't buying it.
If, on the other hand, Clifton now being an actual HS coach (as opposed to a handler) has made him realize he would be better off getting out of the way (and chumming up with Roy will rehab his cred), then hey... if it clears the way for us to get Alkins (and he's actually academically eligible) I'm good...

I would think that Roy wouldn't be recruiting a young man this hard if there were any question of his academic qualifications..If Roy wants this recruit, he's been well informed. Relax

Not what I'm talking about, bro. Obviously Roy is going to vet that out but it ain't necessarily certain yet. Roy recruited John Wall --- or should I say, John Wall recruited Roy --- but in the end he couldn't have gotten admitted. Hope Rawle has gotten his academic act together.

BTW: That place does not have a good reputation with the NCAA.

Spot-on Gary. All we can do is HOPE WOG has it's act together ......................... finally! I'm just to skeptical of the whole thing and Clifton all the sudden is OK with Roy? Doesn't pass the smell test with me.

I hear ya, Mikey. Self-serving at best for Clifton, but if it works out for us? Well, we shall see...

Anything wrong with Word of God becoming the Oak Hill of the South? There is such a thing called "Rehab"...right? I'm willing to let this thing play out regardless of whether Alkins signs with the Heels. Bo Williams used to have a good relationship with Roy and now he hates Roy. K signed Thornton out to the Vegas paper factory high school. Again, I'm willing to have an open mind about this.

Let's just trust Roy and the staff--Roy won't ever put his/our University in any questionable admissions or recruiting tactics--calm down
Seriously, it's not a matter of "calm down". It's a matter of experience and reality. My doubts are not in any way about Roy --- they are about Clifton.

So how are we looking with this kid...Would be a nice piece to add with what we already have....

In honor of the new Star Wars movie...I think the force is strong with Alkins and not so as much with Udoka.
