Duh if you made 30k (good money in '80) in 1980 then doesn't go very far in 2015 and when the tax rates were highest in those years very few made that kind of money.
Do you know how progressive taxation works? You do realize the tax brackets were different then too, right? You didn't have to make $400K to be subject to the highest bracket the way you do now. In other words, if you were wealthy for the time back then, you were subject to the highest bracket, which was 90%. If you're wealthy by today's standards now, you're subject to the highest bracket now, which is only 39.5%.
