Thoughts on Nate Oats

...and has times where he is in absolute no-mans-land for extended times on defense - five feet away from any offensive player, guarding nobody, stuck too slow on a switch / help defense.

I think his brain tells him where to be and knows where he needs to be on defense, but his body, and athletic abilities cause him not to get there!

His playing time has been around the 8 to 9 minute mark in our best outings, and with the level of this team that's about right. Roy knows what he is doing he also knows that he is a liability against the better talent other wise of he was as great as some here claim him to be he would be starting and getting 25 to 30 minutes a game!

LMAO. Unsurprisingly, you know nothing about bama sports recruiting. The REC (Red Elephant Club --- that annually restocks Saban's shelves), started throwing big hoops $$$ around when Avery Johnson got there (including a couple-hundred-grand to Colin Sexton), and suffice to say that hasn't abated.
What percentage of Power 5 programs aren't paying recruits? From what I hear very few. Personally, I don't really care. These guys all deserve to get paid anyway.

Ya know it’s funny, I googled Alabama Basketball cheating and only got a hit for an associate AD doing some off the books stuff. But there are scores of stuff about Auburn and Pearl. Not sure why you care as a UNC guy.

Looking at age, accomplishments, potential, and the ability to run a clean program, give me Oats all day long.
Well, golly gee, you "googled" Alabama basketball. Bless your heart.

What in the hell are you even talking about??? Good Lord, man. Platek is NEVER in no-man's land. In fact, every coach I know talks about what a damned clinic he is in off-ball defense. It's why he's always in position to help and draw charges, while still being able to close out on his man on 3s (the only guy on the team who consistently does that, BTW.) and sometimes even on his teammate's man when they lose them.

Just wow at the disconnect.

I don't really have a dog in this Platek fight but yeah he closes out well...too well multiple times this year where's he's fouled a 3 point shooter...

Platek has had great game against all competition. He suffers from a weird facial thing with his eyes and lacks some athleticism, but he does the little things that help teams win. He would be a better defender if his perimeter mates learned how to help and rotate properly. (+the young bigs) His lack of footspeed is exposed when he has to help someone else who has let go of his man and then he can't recover. I agree with the silly passes though. I also agree that he has fouled 3 point shooters too often, but see my other point about his mates for that. I wish we had 5 guys on the court that played D like AP! But carry on if you guys want to.

NE game.

Tell me who exactly he is guarding at 13:30 -14:30 stage of the game video linked above. And at 44:50. Just two examples. I didn't assess every minute he was in. He can't play close up on his man, for fear of getting blown by with a quick dribble move.

I think its pretty unwise / sketchy / out there to say any player is perfect on defense in any entire game. Let alone saying a dude is "always a perfect lock down machine" LOL.

I haven't gone back and looked but has Platek graded out as best on the team on defense each game he's played this year? Since he's always been the perfect lock down guy, I assume he has.

Has Roy enlisted Platek as THE shutdown guy to put on the other team's hot player (Walker for Northeastern) - to cool the guy off? No? I think its been mostly Leaky Black in that shutdown mode against Northeastern and other teams this year. Why Leaky and not Platek?

Maybe it is some conspiracy Roy has against Platek that he won't play him 30+ a game - what with him always being a perfect lockdown defender.

I like Platek as much as any other Heels player and he gives it his all and contributes a lot to the team in his role. Your making him out to be the second coming of Jordan or Jackie Manuel on defense makes it hard to look at him objectively, though.

Put me in the camp of being thoroughly confused as to how objective Gary can be regarding most everything else related to basketball, except, Platek. It truly is one of the greatest mysteries of the world.

I, along, with many others certainly laughed at the comment that Platek is NEVER out of place defensively. Add that to the many head scratching comments made by Gary regarding Platek. Besides the fact that Platek isn't UNC talent level, despite being a great kid, I look forward to the day we don't have to hear Gary talk about him any more. It's delusional at this point.

Ok. Cool. You’ve got nothing but speculation. Was Nate cheating at Buffalo when he made the tourney 3 times despite their 2 best players leaving when Hurley left?

Tek is DEAD LAST in +/- and it’s not close.

The over promoting of Joel Berry was odd enough, but at least Joel was a great player for us (although obviously did have his own faults and wasn't perfect in every possible way as was portrayed).

The obsession with overhyping 'Tek, quite possibly the worst player on the team that gets any meaningful minutes, is just bizarre.

Only on THR can we turn a Nate Oats thread turn into Andrew Platek debate. I love it.

I'm tempted to start a thread on the role the Cossacks played in the Russian Revolution so we can see how many poasts it takes to get Platek in the mix of the revolution.

I wanna know where Plates was on Jan 6. Was that really him, bare chested with temporary tats and wearing the Viking horns into the Senate chambers?

Fun fact on Nate Oats. He recruited and landed Ronaldo Segu when he was the coach of Buffalo. Former teammate of Nas Little in HS. Having a good junior season.

That poster who said Platek was going to be talked about all the time was right.

....
Exhibit A:

Sure he does, but you are way to uninformed for him to waste the time to explain it to you!

On another note Platek pitched a shutout on D last night!

I know there are a group that think by having a go at Platek, they're having a go at Gary.... which in itself is infantile, but enough already! Platek the player has proved his worth as a decent bench option who's added more senior leadership this year than the pre-season ACC player of the year.

You have lost your mind!
Not at all. I won't get into an arguement with you but I'll just say your obsession with bringing him into every discussion as a way to take a jab at Gary is infantile and much less mind-strong than my opinion of Platek's worth to the team this year.
And if you think Brice has been more valuable to the team this season, you obviously haven't seen his woeful shooting, defence and rebounding (not counting him getting multiple stat-stuffer rebounds from his own missed shots)

I must agree his play has been much better than Brice's play this year!

But who TF is Brice, is he on the JV team?

Meanwhile....Nate Oates is a really good coach who I hope gets a look once Roy retires! (Provided he continues on his current trajectory and no family members are substantially better!)

Platek is a great role player for our system and is one of the reasons we will make the Dance this year!

To be fair, Oats' team laid an egg tonight at Arkansas. They've looked off all game other than a hot stretch of 3s to close out the first half.
The pigs were getting some pretty favorable class early but the game was called really tight. Kinda weird cause both announcers said the same thing. But yes they were bad off in the first 10

He’s one of the up and coming stars of the college game. Love his style of play that he took from the Spurs blueprint.

I am more and more impressed the more I see of Oats, and hear him talk, how he approaches the game. They play "not satisfied" even when up by 20+ ... he makes sure they keep their foot on other team's throat, play defense, end it. It just seems different than what the Heels did this year when getting a lead, except for a couple big blowouts where the other team quit.

So there is Oats who I think should be on Heels list, and maybe also Andy Enfield from USC (was originally at FGCU).

Both guys seem like very cerebral strategic coaches. And Enfield was a shooting coaching specialist for Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics before coaching. I sense that he knows how to find shooters in high school, and how to "fix" mediocre shooters in college.

Granted I don't follow SEC (Oats - Alabama) or PAC 12 (Enfield- USC ) that closely, but it does seem that both these coaches / programs have put together impressive teams, without a lot of big name 5 star OAD talent. Both teams seem to have quite a few interchangable very good players. By interchangable I mean guys who can guard positions 1-4 on defense, have the quickness, size, and athleticism to stay in front of their guy one-on-one, and can shoot 3s really well, and can slash and drive to the hoop and finish strong.

I think FSU sort of fits this mold, too. Sort of a prototype of NBA teams now with several "positionless" players.

It just seems we / Roy are not structured like that at all. Overloaded with bigs (4 or 5 bigs on roster), none who can guard on the perimeter, none who can shoot outside of 10 feet to save their lives.

Then we have a wing in Leaky who can't throw it in the ocean from a boat, and isn't that great of a defender, isn't a strong driver and finisher. Just not that bright.

Our guards - in RJ and Ant, may be too small , not good enough defenders, not good enough shooters, to be big time ACC / NCAA players. And Love can't shoot either. Kerwin can shoot, but can't really drive well, and can't defend. Not that strong or quick.

I just think Roy has a lot of changing to do in the program, to get to a structure that is successful in this day and age in college basketball. Including guys quick enough and athletic enough to guard 3 point shots.
