UNC vs Duke game thread----Thursday 9 February 2017

It wasn't that much of an up-and-down, high tempo game. Lots of half court sets especially for Dook on offense. So our guys shouldn't have been that tired.

So - my point is - shorten the bench as others have said here, and almost all the offense has to be run through Berry and JJ as first and second options, or feeding Meeks / Hicks. The fact that we get nothing from the SG spot does kill us. But I like the lineup best with Berry, Pinson, and Jackson on the court together, with Meeks and Bradley.

Maye is just overmatched inside on defense, and when trying to score at the rim. And honestly, we have too many times when Berry and Jackson and Pinson and Meeks were ALL on the bench. Where does our offense come from then?

It's also hard to ignore the fact that Dook owns us recently. 12 of last 15. That's kick you in the dick and still your wife type shit.

Especially whe. You think that at least 4 of those came when we were far superior.
That's a hard fact to digest. It does get old that's for sure. I say we take em in TSC by more than 8

We missed 8 FT's including front end of 1-1's which could of possibly gave us a few more free throws.... That is why we lost tonight....
Look at JJ shoot them. Its like he thinks he'll get more points the quicker he shoots it. I told my son that for these guys, FTs should be mostly mental. If you're tired.... step out of the circle and catch your breath.... take some of your ten seconds. But no excuse for them to be such bricklayers last few contests. Seems like shooting a ton of them in practice won't solve anything..... they need to practice shooting them after running sprints (which I assume they do).... and if they can't make 2-2, it results in more sprints for the team. They have to take them seriously..... not just jack it up. It did cost them the game.

IMO this whole game was all on our weak defense. Hot shooters should not be left alone. If they are 4 feet behind the line we should be sharing the same shorts. DO NOT LEAVE HOT SHOOTERS:(

I'd be willing to bet over those 15 games that we've went 3-12, that we had the better team over half of the 15. Also, we haven't won the first matchup of the season since 2014, and haven't won both games vs dook during a season since 2008. sometimes I wish the intensity we bring to NC State games, we could bring to dook games

And it's not like it is a surprise that dook was gonna try to beat us with the 3 ball. They do it every year. And yet it takes us 3/4 of the game to realize "hey, we don't need to help defend and leave the shooter open"

Changing point of the game was when Berry decided to go 2 on 1 instead of passing the ball to a streaking Jackson and got blocked. Berry is a selfish player if he doesn't change his ways we are in trouble. On a lighter note, we win this game with Isiah Hicks in the lineup.

Berry is ABSOLUTELY not a selfish player, but played selfish at times tonight. And I think it is because he wants to be "the man" so bad and put the team on his back and carry them when they need it.

All good points to with JB and him continuing to produce low assist numbers and take some marginal shots early in shot clock. Same for Jackson not getting involved in 2nd half. Meeks being a sack of potatoes in the paint.

He's not the reason we lost but What nobody continues to talk about is that we give significant minutes to a kid who is a black hole offensively for us. He can't shoot. He can't take anybody off the dribble. He doesn't rebound well.....Kenny Williams.
Gon' - dead on - on all points. Go back and look at Pinson tonight. He is a STUD. He seems to me to know exactly when to shoot, and when not to. And look how aggressive he was taking his guy to the hole. Just awesome.

Whenever he is full speed and game shape (which seems like he was tonight), he needs to start and get 32+ minutes at the 2 or wheverever. Looks to score off the drive, doesn't jack up dumb long jumpers, eats the glass on both ends, locks guys down at almost any spot 1-5, and is a very quick active smart passer.

I like Kenny on defense, but it is literally 4 on 5 on the offensive end with him in the game. Did he shoot tonight? Did he even peek at the basket?

And in a few of those games we had the game won and absolutely shit the bed

I heard jr Reid talking on wfnz in Charlotte today and he was saying unc has always preached aggressive help defense to stop penetration and that will always leave open shooters because most defensive rotations just can't react fast enough. he said most of the former players he speaks with all agree we shouldn't help as aggressively in today's game because the shooter are just too good. I think this is similar to the time out issue. That is the way Roy learned it from Dean and he will just not change.

Right. And we can't have it both ways. We can't say he needs to step up, then bitch when he takes (IMO) legit shots, or drives. He does just seem a bit lethargic at times, then at other times his old lock down self. Almost seems like he's not 100%. I wish he would've taken a few more shots, including threes, but he doesn't seem as quick using screens or cuts to get himself open with or without the ball. And he seems a bit slower at making the quick right decision leading to an assist, especially feeding post players. This team looks so different than the Maui team. Hicks out obviously hurts, but they have to get the rotation shortened and figured out..... and I hope and pray we get back to everyone truly healthy.

Well keep being stubborn and playing that defense and come across a team that shoots a high % and we can look for more losses like this 1

Need to insert Meeks in second half as well. He didn't get many touched in half 1
7 shots for the game.

That would be bad if Hicks were in there and having a good game. Hard to understand with Hicks out.

3 shots for Tony. He made all of them. Why not more PT and more touches?

Yes, yes, we needed smaller guys in there to cover their outside shooters. But that doesn't explain so few touches for these 2 guys on the offensive end.

I don't think he is selfish but it's like he thinks he can get hot at any moment instead of making his teammates better

If you don't think Berry is a selfish player I have some beach front property in Idaho I'm willing to sell!
I really don't mind that Berry took those shots. None of us would have been surprised if he had made them. And somebody needed to score.

It's just that he doesn't seem to be as good as he was earlier in the season.

So we can all agree that Theo should take most all of Kenny's minutes. When your starting shooting guard continues to barely score or even create anything on offense by dribble or even look like a threat to shoot, it's time for him to sit and sit a lot. Everything we have all highlighted is 100% true in the game tonight. But these things are amplified when we continue to play 4 on 5 when we are on offense.

Do you think it's easy on JB to take the ball to the hoop when his back court partner doesn't require any attention? Do you think it's easy for JJ to work in space with a shooting guard that doesn't require attention? Do you think it's easy for Hicks or Meeks to succeed in the post when you are all but guaranteed to get permanent help defense from whoever is guarding Kenny williams. It's beyond the time in the year to Trim the fat. Give our top 7-8 guys about all the minutes they can handle.

Anytime Dook plays I put their magic number of 3's made at 12 for them to win.... No matter who they play they will attempt 25-30+ 3's a game... They hit 13 tonight, we were missing Hicks and yet it was a 1 possession game in the last minute..... FT shooting did us in!!!!! These are just my opinions and I will wake up in the morning like I would of if we had won....

We missed a bunch of free throws, they mad a shit ton of threes. At the end of the day, we win easily with Isiah

Yep. Roy has the team chewing lightning and crapping thunder for Moo.
I get the whole traditional rivalry shtick but let's face it, Theyre not the team Roy needs to beat..... a regular season sweep of dook would do wonders for recruiting.

The reason why Joel Berry has low assists is that he doesn't seem to be able to get the ball into the bigs inside, which may be more of a big issue than him. They easily fed Brice last year. No one seems to be able to get the angles or size advantages like Brice used to.

I really wanted to see a lineup of JB, Theo, Jackson, Bradley, Hicks to see if we could take advantage with size. They were making the threes anyways, should have given it a shot.

Berry is soo selfish... game after game he decides to go one on five

Joel Berry is an alpha male but he needs to know when to pass and when to attack. He had an awful fkn game. In my opinion, the game was over when we had a small lead, had a fast break where it was Joel and Justin running...Joel decides not to make the easy pass to Justin and tries to go himself. Gets stripped for a bucket the other way. Then he starts choking at the line.

Pathetic. My Falcons get their dicks kicked in and a few days later, this shit happens. Sports are really kicking my ass right now..
