Asheville got totally fukked. Swanannoa and Black Mtn are even worse. Chimney Rock has pretty much been wiped off the map. Haven’t had wifi or cell service since yesterday morning.
Finally bummed some wifi off the hospital and posted up in a camp chair to watch Carolina piss away the win. Watching them shit the bed from a FEMA disaster zone is definitely a new low.

Western NC is like New Orleans during Katrina. It's a mess all over this area too. Not as bad as Western NC, though... It's hard to believe how much damage was done there.
A lot of people here still won’t realize how bad it is because cell and wifi is still mostly down. I’m lucky to have a spot where I can get wifi but most people are totally in the dark.
Helicopters and sirens are pretty much constantly in the background. It sounds like the beginning of an apocalypse movie.
This is one of the reasons I left the coast. Every fall is the same thing. This is the first one that's had a major impact this far inland since Hugo, I think.
I never knew Western NC was such a risk for flooding like that. I don't know if it's the placement of the escarpment or what. Stay safe.
Swanannoa is low and flat which I think is a big reason why it got crushed so bad. A lot of trailer parks which seem to have been totally destroyed. I’m guessing that’s where most of the fatalities will have been.
Biltmore has the French broad right behind it plus swannanoa river feeding into it. It’s basically right next to an intersection of two waterways. Swannanoa river floods during heavy rain anyways, so it crested the banks early.
They should’ve evacuated larger areas. They basically only suggested evacuation for historical flood zones but there’s a lot of people trapped in other areas because of the fallen trees and mudslides.
I know Old Fort got hit as well so I’m sure the Black Mountains got hammered. I don’t think I’ll be getting to make any pilgrimages up to Mt Mitchell until spring at the earliest. Idk how bad the parkway got hit but I won’t be surprised if chunks of it are missing.

I guess they’re just now getting some phone service in some areas around Asheville so starting to hear horror stories. Old classmate of mine and his wife spent all day on their roof. Another friend when I texted him said he was walking out trying to find help and some food but had no cash. Both lived in swannanoa
clips started showing up on youtube and on my Windows newsfeed yesterday and I saw only a few seconds of them and I had to stop. 'Devastation' fails to describe what I saw in those few seconds.
City planning is based on what will logically happen because of money. It makes no sense from a planning perspective to prepare Texas for a snow storm or NYC for tornadoes. Same for preparing the mountains for a category four hurricane. That money needs to go to snow storm preparation. So, when crazy stuff happens, like a bad hurricane in the mountains, it has a huge impact.
30 people known dead in buncombe county (Asheville area) 60 “officially” missing with around 1000 unaccounted for as reported by friends and family. Prob just the tip of the iceberg since still with no cell or internet. I’m at my parents with no power still and a big tree down in their yard and they feel lucky.
many years ago when there were newsgroups instead of message boards, I would tangle with this typical yankee transplant who moved here to get away from whatever northern shithole he had escaped from, and immediately and mindlessly started bitching that things were not the same as they were in the shithole he had left.

Why, back where he was from he said, they had a gazillion dollars worth of men and equipment staged to react and keep people working, etc. I had to point out to the dummy that there was little point in spending that kind of money on something that rarely occurred here, to do what nature would do in a day or two anyway..
One of my oldest friends, we both lived in Myrtle Beach during Hugo, lives up in Boone North Carolina now. I talked to him today for about 10 or 15 minutes. He said man this is worse than you go, as far as the devastation he's having to deal with. From what I see, it looks just like New Orleans after Katrina and that's what he was saying.

Live in Lenoir and just got power back about 2 hours ago and seeing what I’ve seen in the last 2 hours made my kids realize 55 hours without power and internet was a blessing!! A neighbor goes to App State and there was water damage to her dorm room on the 7th floor!!!!
It's crazy what happened in western NC. I've been bike-riding the last two days, all around Clemson/Oconee... it's a friggin mess in a lot of places. They say Duke Power may be 1-2 weeks, or more, in upstate SC. Who knows when up in the mountains.
There's a little cut-through I take when I go to Brevard, near the border, it's called Rocky Bottom, hwy 178. That place got almost 24 inches of rain.

Winds gusted up to about 60 mph but a lot of the damage to WNC was the flooding.. I’ve seen reports of anywhere between 14-30 inches of rain in the mountains and foothills of NC
You even had bad flooding in lenior? I asked about winds cuz I assumed your power outages from wind damage.

Lenoir Golf Club and streets near Lower Creek that run through town were flooded… Also heading up 321 towards Boone a lot of side roads were flooded and some I’ve heard of washed away that are near little creeks and streams
Main issues in town though were yes due to the high winds

I used to play bball at that all souls church every Sunday afternoon. They had several nice outdoor courts and they attracted lots of players. Some serious bball went down there.
Okay so here’s what I just dont get. I’m not trying to push anyone’s buttons or pick a fight but evidently a rainbow appeared in the skies over wnc today. It’s all over social media. And everyone is like “praise god thank you god!” Lol. Praise god? For what exactly? An all knowing, all powerful, all loving deity has manipulated the weather and atmosphere to create a rainbow but chose not to manipulate the weather to prevent the rain to begin with?…and with it all this death misery and suffering? It makes no sense. I mean I understand the symbolism with Noah and the flood but still….you wanna impress me god how about dissipating the hurricane while at sea instead of throwing us a rainbow bone after allowing entire towns to be swept away by it. Amen.
I think it's people trying to cope with the trauma and attaching the symbolism of their adjacent belief structure to bring a resolution to it... maybe even inspire them. One of the things that happens in the wake of these events is the resilience and kindness in the human collective. The crisis brings people together in a way that nothing else will.
In spite of the destruction, the celestial king is still watching over it all. God survived, too.

here's what I don't get. People who struggle to find meaning in life make me just shake my head. Why does there have to be meaning? Why do we lie awake at night trying to fond the answer to an unanswerable question? It is what it is, and what it is at default is a struggle. It's dog eat dog, dodge the asteroid, survival of the fittest kind of shit. If there is a God, he didn't drop civilization down on us with automatically watered lawns and wide screen TVs to watch football games on. All he gave us was an opportunity to make lemonade out of lemons. The only gifts he promised us here were those of our own making. I'm not just good with that, I'm damn glad for it.
A rainbow in the midst of misery? I have no problem at all with people imagining that it's God smiling down, even though I don't imagine it is myself. It's really just a matter of perspective.
