2018 Atlanta Braves thread

Jacoby Ellsbury is a walking, talking hospital bill.

Seriously, they're going to have to cyrogenically freeze him so he can make a full recovery. Then when he's released from the freezing chamber, he'll trip on a wire, pull a hamstring, and go right back on the DL.

I feel bad for him, but by the same token we don't even need him at this point. Between Judge, Stanton, Gardner, Hicks, AND Clint Frazier we're not lacking in quality outfielders.

I'm obviously excited as hell about the Braves start but I'm still working under the assumption that this isn't a playoff team. Why? Well besides the obvious specter of slight regression, there's also the absolute monster that is the National League this season.

Standings

We better pray the NL West becomes mediocre (the DBacks continue their slide, the Giants realize they're an AARP team and start losing, and the Dodgers continue to SAD) as well as hope that Pittsburgh goes on a skid (their run differential indicates they might) because..... odds are that both Wild Card berths are going to go to NL East clubs.

We're on a tear through our first 44 games and basically have as good of a record as we could possibly have, and we're like...1-3 games up on potential Wild Card suitors. That's it.

I'm waiting for the Yankees' home run numbers to slow down, but they just like... might not. It's getting long enough in to the season that it might just be who this team is. Currently, they don't look beatable, except by Houston if the Astros are hitting well in that particular series. The Astros' run differential of +96 is retarded. Best in MLB by a mile.

Houston has the better pitching, so I still think it's fair to say they're the favorites. But the gap has closed. When you win 3 of 4 on their turf, a place that was a nightmare for New York last year, you're more than capable of beating them in a playoff series.

As for the home runs, well, watch em fly. Because there are going to be a lot of them.

A series in May means nothing really. Houston's bats haven't even fully awakened yet and yet their RD is off the charts. The Yanks could certainly take down the Stros in a playoff series, but the series earlier this month has no bearing on that. I will say, I'd love to see that series for an ALCS. Talk about a star-studded series with Verlander, Correa, Altuve, Springer, Stanton, Sanchez, Servino, Judge, etc.

Lol What's there to understand? Very cheap signing to see what he's got. He didn't have anything so they let him go. That's all there was to it.
Agreed with this. It was the ultimate low-risk, high-reward move. Braves fans are being too bitc*y about the move to be honest. While Camargo was recovering from his oblique injury, we were getting ZERO offense from 3B. Those two homers Bautista hit were not only two more than Flaherty or Culberson could give us, but they also were instrumental in securing two wins. Even from that standpoint alone, I would say it was worth it to sign him.

Also don't forget that in the 9th inning against the Giants on that Sunday, when we were down 4-1, he led off that inning with a single and came around to score to spark a comeback attempt that almost let us tie the game.

I mean, the Bautista signing was essentially a lottery ticket. What if he came up and blasted homers left and right and held his own at 3B? Sure, it wasn't likely, but for the cheap price and considering our best 3B was in AA at the time, the move was a no brainer. I never understood the backlash. It's not like we wasted tons of resources on the guy.

It's early but so far this Marlins pitcher -- who is supposed to be a bum -- is pitching out of his mind. He's painting the corners on every pitch.

Also, this ump has a weird strikezone.

ETA: Chen is getting strike calls on right handed batters on balls 9 inches off the plate. And it has our hitters unsure of when they need to protect the plate.

ETA x2: I'm gonna have to come back to this game I think. It's frustrating watching this scrub pitch so well against us.

Lol Dude...
Was I wrong? Lol.

Welp, its over now
The fact that Teheran let that inning go so sideways is so pathetic. That was Foltynewicz-esque right there.

It's always the damn Marlins. I don't get it.
The problem is their roster isn't even that bad right now, until they start selling pieces for scraps. Also, Justin Bour is a true blue Braves murderer. Dude is country strong and hits the ball hard every time.

A few things:
  1. Sometimes the Braves need to show some GD discipline at the plate if it's a KNOWN heavy walks guy like Strailey or Chen
  2. Our home record is quickly becoming a crisis.
  3. Teheran is back to Teheran. The revolution was short-lived.
  4. This might be the last day we see first place for a long while (assuming the Phillies win today). Colossal series with the Phillies up next.

Yeah it's time for the Braves to cut ties. Snitker kinda managed to 'lose' by putting Sims in there and saving the bullpen. Remember when Sims was the #1 prospect in our whole system? Yikes.
Yep, no telling what would have happened if he never brought Sims in. We just scored a couple of runs, and here comes Sims to give them right back. Now, here it is in the 9th and we're trying to make something happen. We could have pulled it off.

I was tracking it on Gametracker while working on stuff, and I kept being like... no... no way... can we?

I didn't wanna turn on the game and ruin our mojo, but I caved and watched Swanson's at-bat. HELL YEAH!!! Viking battle ax!

Yankees offense hits another 4 home runs. Gray looked like he's an actual No. 2 starter. And this was without Sanchez, Didi or Bird in the lineup.

They still need another quality starter, but damn this team is fun to watch.

High praise for sure. Hopefully Ozzie and Acuna follow Chipper and play their entire careers in a Braves uniform.
