2018 Atlanta Braves thread

I'm starting to think Swanson is going to be an average player at best. He'll be a guy who just hits .250 and plays steady defense making the routine plays without making many errors but nothing spectacular. He has Mark Lemke and Keith Lockhart written all over him. Nothing wrong with that, but #1 pick? Very disappointing.

Everyone questioned the front office of the Diamondbacks for trading Swanson so soon after the draft. Maybe they knew then he wasn't going to be an elite player.

We really need to make a move for a closer at the deadline. If we end up in the playoffs, can you imagine Viz trying to close a game in that environment?
We need a reliable closer and a stud SS. If those 2 things can happen.....LOOKOUT!!!! I'm ready for first pitch today....Let's Get It On!!!!

No, no I cannot. My heart would explode from anxiety. It was only May 22nd, and I had to busy myself cleaning and tidying up the TV room while watching him close last night because I couldn't handle just sitting down.

My vote for closer would be Iglesias from the Reds. We could get him for basically nothing. Additionally, the White Sox's Nate Jones would be a similar situation for us.

If we can address the offensive black hole at 3B by calling up Austin Riley or getting a guy like Moose from KC, I'm okay letting Dansby hit 7th or 8th, simply because of his glove. I still have faith he can turn into a better hitter, but we'll see. There's no reason he can't make an Andrelton-like upward ascent out of nowhere.

Considering how out-of-shape he is, I would be shocked if Gohara goes five tonight.
Word on the radio here is it will be a spring training-esque type deal where Gohara goes 3-4 innings and Sims gets the "second" start.

Given that info, I see no way how we win this game unless we jump all over Arrietta early.

Despite me giving him crap about the shape he's in, Gohara does have some pretty damn nasty stuff. He has a chance to be really, really good if he can stay healthy.

When will outlets covering the Braves start talking about our LOB numbers? It's an epidemic and you don't hear a peep about it. That 1 run for Philly is probably enough tonight, tbh.

Just got home from sons baseball banquet, thought coach would never shut the hell up. Ain’t looking good so far but we’re still in it. Our offense can still explode. Let’s go Bravos!!!!

I'm getting sorta annoyed with the "give Newcomb an extra day every time" thing. Unquestionably, it's been working for him, but like... is it worth sacrificing another game in the process? Because tonight, we conceded an L to give Newcomb his precious 6th day. You know it, I know it, Snitker knows it, AA knows it. Not a huge fan of that move.

Also, LOL at people talking about playoffs with this team. Our offense clams up whenever we face a Top 20 pitcher (not named Syndegaard). If we actually make the playoffs, we will get owned.

ETA: That may seem negative, but I don't think it's inaccurate. I think this team is just starting to regress back to the mean, especially with respect to the bottom half of our lineup which -- on paper -- is very bad.

We most likely won't make the playoffs, but I kind of disagree with this. The way the lineup is constructed, isn't this the type of offense that you want to have in the playoffs? They make consistent contact, strike out the least, and there's speed all over the place. That's the type of offense that can grind out games, which is what you need. The LOB stuff is a concern, but they can get that figured out. I'd be more concerned with the young pitching than I would the offense if we somehow make it in.

Well you and @TarHeelNation11 of course.

If I were a Braves fan I’d be thrilled right now.
Lol How am I distraught? I feel good about this team. Just because I don't think they'll make the playoffs doesn't mean I'm not thrilled about them. I actually think they'll finish above .500 but just miss the playoffs. That's a hell of a season considering where we've been.

Fair enough. It’s nice to see the Braves playing well again.

I'm not sure I agree with this either, honestly, at least not completely. Really, all this is just the offense going through a rough patch, which is gonna happen.
Also, I don't think the bottom of the lineup is all that bad. It's only as bad as it is because we have utility player playing everyday to patch up a need. Either Moustakas comes over or we bring up Riley, and that pretty much fixes it. Suzuki and Flowers are solid major league hitters and there's not a thing wrong with Ender. Swanson...well there's legit concerns there. I just hope he stays respectable.
