2020 recruiting thread

Cam Hayes on an unofficial.

Hosting 2021 5-star point guard Cam Hayes on an unofficial visit to Chapel Hill

Surprised he still doesn't have an offer yet. IK Roy doesn't usually offer recruits earlier than their Junior year barring them being a super special talent, but I think he could be our Day'ron Sharpe type commit if he got one soon. JM2C.

Wonder if he and Wilson met up

Rankings for Tar Heel Targets/Interest:
Cunningham - 3
Ziaire - 6 (!!!!!)
Brown - 9
Kessler - 12
Springer - 14
Day'ron - 18
Thompson - 19
Todd - 20
Love - 26
Ware - 41
Johnson - 48
Hall - 52

Bold are the ones I'm really intrigued by.

Lot of movement for a couple of our targets. As expected, our guy Day'ron is now a 5* recruit. Thompson and Puff shot up the charts like a weed. Springer mostly staying put. Ziaire closing in on Top 5 status.

Todd was once the #1 player in the nation, but has since fallen to #20. Not bad by any means, but still.

Day'ron now in the range where he's fairly likely to be OAD. Some #15-20 ranked players still stay, but not if they have great freshman years. Not that I mind, just interesting to note for future roster discussions.

Puff is really puffing up! Hope we can land at least one of these guys by September.

A couple thoughts:

I have said it before and I'll say it again, kudos to Roy and the staff for getting on Day'Ron like they did early. He has continued to rise and rise since committing and has so many of the national scouts very high on his game and character. Color me excited for that post rotation in 20-21 with Brooks, Bacot, Sharpe and Manley. Keep working Day'Ron!

What a jump from Bryce Thompson, as he went up 70 spots from the last ranking and is now inside the top 20. I read that he is planning on visiting sometime soon (maybe after the NBPA Camp in VA) and really hope that he can come away with a great visit as he has talked about not only wanting to get to the next level, but also wanting to enjoy his college experience and establish great relationships, all of which we can offer for him. I think that Steve Robinson's relationship with his dad will be a huge plus for us here.

Zaire Williams is a kid I would really love to get and could see being successful in our system. From watching bits of his games during the Spring Eval Period you can see his game translating to the next level, he is extremely versatile and has a nice stroke with the ability to score it at a high level at all three levels. I also saw in him, some more of an ability to distribute and find those around him which is something that I think would translate very well to the way we play and allow him to get to the rim even more as defenses will need to be concise of his passing ability too. He has impressed many scouts with his increased aggressiveness and confidence this year, which all bodes well for him leading into college. Adding an instant impact wing like is a big need for the 2020 which will lose Cole, Keeling, B-Rob and Pierce; and Zaire fits that mold perfectly to fill in out on the wing.

A recruitment I want to continue to keep my eye on is Cade Cunningham's, he is a different breed and would be an amazing haul to have him at 6'6 slotted at the PG position for 2020 with his playmaking abilities. He lit up the gym at Geico Nationals and has really elevated his game to another level, getting it done on both ends of the floor. Roy has said to him that he sees him as a PG and wants him to come in and be the next Cousy Winner. That would certainly be quite a 3 year succession from Coby to Cole to Cade and one that I would take with open arms.

Cam Hayes will move back to 2020 i hear.
Reclassed when he moved to greensboro day school but no need at this point to wait.

One thing to note is that we've yet to have one of our "will they/won't they" recruits have a "subpar" enough season to not get drafted. Coby was sensational. Bradley wasn't amazing, but he was also behind 2 great players. Who knows, Bacot could shock the world and end up in the Late first round next year.

Bit of a double edged sword. Good for pitching to recruits and having solid players for a year, but also makes it hard to build a team for the future.

Even more surprising that he doesn't have an offer, then. Unless Roy is deadset on Love. Would think we would jump on him ASAP before he reclassifies and sees an all new flurry of interest.

At the very least, we wouldn't have to worry about Dook sniffing around since they got Roach, but recruits won't wait around forever. I'd bet he gets one before the end of August, though.

It goes back to the "core". We always have those 3-4 year kids, many very good.
I'd love to see Armando take his time in CH.

The days sure seem to be getting better and better! Since the naysayers said the NCAA stuff didn't really impact recruiting at UNC and that Roy was losing his touch, to what do they attribute our sudden string of successes?

On a positive note, it sure is nice to see UNC at the top of so many elite recruits' lists. I believe Cade, Zaire, Puff, and Love would be a great class! I think that if Bacot jumps to the league, it will mean he had a great year and the Tar Heels went deep in the tourney; it would also finish killing the stupid narrative that Roy holds peeps back! CA is a hoss and will definitely prove the Katz's of the world to be idiots!

Yes, I agree and that's why I think landing Anthony Harris this spring was big for us. Also, that is why Jalen Wilson would be a nice add too.

Looking at 2020, Puff would be such a big get as he can be a guy who can help add to that core which has brought us nice success over the last few years and slide up and down a position if need be. I can see Lance Ware at the 4 as another multi-year guy as well. We will need post players in the 2021-2022 season with Brooks, Manley and Huffman graduating and the chances of early departures from Bacot and Sharpe.

Think about Leaky who projects to be here another year or two after this season, his value continues to increase as many of the other recruits in his class have gone pro. He will have more experience in the college game, his IQ will continue to grow and he will know more about what it takes to win at this level compared to the newcomers coming in from other schools. Having those core guys is a major plus for us and helps to bridge the gaps from class to class while also giving you a nice mix of talented upperclassmen and underclassmen.

I really think that 2020 and 2021 are two important classes to be able to bring in the core pieces we need, in addition to the instant impact guys as those multi-year guys will be even more valuable a few years later when they are still on campus and the O&D rule ends.

I really, really wanted Zaire. Because when he was ranked 19th, I thought he was a guy we might have for 2 years. But now he's in the top 5 and I guess that's good for him. It's less good for us because if he commits, he's OAD.

I still really like that kid though. Smart kid and he has game.

IMO, Ziaire moving into OAD territory works very well for us. If we end up landing Ziaire, I was expecting to have him for at least 2 years, but given his rise, that likely won't be the case anymore.

But it also means we could take another one of those "core" guys at SF to build around like Puff or Hall.

Certainly can’t hurt our chances, although I’ve felt he is UK bound for a while now.

Yeah Arch I'm with you here. A local guy that I am paying attention to is Josh Hall. He is planning on taking an unofficial visit and playing pickup with the guys sometime this month. It will be interesting to see if he is offered on the visit, because based on what I have read on him it seems that an offer from Carolina is one that would really mean a lot to him. He has recently shot up 50+ spots in the latest 24-7 rankings and is said to be someone that could shoot up even more with a good summer. Hall could be a nice pickup as he is another player that can really score it with a very nice stroke and also give us the ability to slot him at multiple positions defensively.

An offer to this guy should be a no brainer.

These guys are listed as "Prospects" without offers by 247. Which, if any, should we offer? Who else should we offer?

03 SF Scottie Barnes 6'8 210
04 SF Jalen Johnson 6'8 215
23 C Hunter Dickinson 7'2 255
41 SF Jabri Abdur-Rahim 6'5 185
64 C Elijah Hutchins-Everett 6'10 225
85 SF Josh Hall 6'9 190
230 SF Silas Mason 6'7 180
NA SG Jonathan Jackson 6'4 170

Roy has been over to see the NBA Top 100 camp to see some kids of interest and our guy Day'Ron Sharpe is becoming a very good player. Seems to have a lot more want to than other kids.

Yes, and Bryce Thompson is on an unofficial to CH!

He took an unofficial on his own $, then later took an official, IIRC, both last season.

Correct. The first was in October of last season and then he saw us whoop on the dookies in March. Coming all the way from Cali - no matter who foots the bill - I think that says a lot.

There must have been strong signals from Ziaire’s family that they were highly interested in Carolina because it seems like the usual suspects (pun intended) are keeping their slimy paws off of this one.

Seems like we’re looking at the starting SF for the 2020-21 season. The Class of 2020 is really good and things are shaping up nicely for the Heels. Has potential to be one of Roy’s best.

I noticed that deuceman, the "I'll recruit the kid to muddy the waters, don't really have an interest in him but just want to screw with UNC on recruiting" has not been shown...yet, hope it stays that way.

Just listened to Roy's summer press conference. Good insight to the team and the curious things that are Roy's life and basketball .
He did say we are still recruiting for this season. We are recruiting for next as well and well, always. At the end he mentioned his schedule and it is busy. Very busy.

Just a concern I had looking over 2020-21 szn: how does our PG situation pan out if we whiff on both Cade Cunningham and Caleb Love? Assuming Cole has his 1 year, would Leaky take the helm? I thought I read Roy saw him as more of a 1 than anything else. Do we really believe we’re gonna land either of those 2 recruits listed or are we actually prepping to have Leaky run it that szn.

Jeremiah Francis & Cam Hayes. If we whiff on the other 2, Hayes likely gets an offer & accepts.
