Imagine if waited until late summer, until the 11th hour and then transferred himself.
Montgomery would have put them in a position to get to the final four, Not sure now .. Their bigs are no better than ours now..
My three areas of concern for next year are 1) shooting 2) experience 3) post depth
We have Bolden, DeLaurier, and Vrank, and let's face it Vrank ain't playing much. He is our "Huffman" so to speak. Zion will get a ton of minutes at the 4 and I expect Bolden/DeLaurier to split the minutes at the 5 but both are foul prone and Bolden's conditioning does not allow him to play 30-40 minutes per game. We are one injury or foul trouble away from a disaster in the post.
Duke is still looking at options through grad transfer means......a shooter or big man would be a welcomed addition.
I think Duke's best lineups will have DeLaurier or Zion at the 5.
Bolden seems like a more awkward fit. He'll clog driving lanes for Barrett. And he doesn't help the defense like DeLaurier does.
Jones / (O'Connell or grad transfer) / Barrett / Reddish / Williamson will be deadly.
Personally, I prefer Bolden on both ends of the court to DeLaurier. Javin should be a good role player off the bench and nothing more. Outside of a few athletic blocks, he doesn't bring much to the table. He can't make anything that's not a layup or dunk, he fouls at a high rate, & can't seem to hold onto or grab a ball (really poor hands).
Bolden has post moves and much better hands and actually plays defense and can protect the rim. Granted, he's slower but you don't need your center to be quick necessarily.
Same story, different year. dook had talent last year. They had talent the year before that. Does anyone here really believe that this group will be the one to get them a ship next year? So they have 4 talented players come in. What's so different from all of the other years? What they won't have this year, are experienced leaders that can help lead this group deep into March. 5 freshmen aren't winning anything next year! It doesn't matter what they have on their bench because only two of them will play. Then this time next year, it will be the same thing again because all 4 will be gone. This team does not scare me one bit.

I may be bias, but I'd hate being a Duke or UK fan right now. It must suck having to cheer for a new group of kids every season and you don't get the chance to watch kids develop over 3-4 years.

They lost to Kansas who then got rolled by Villanova. There is no way Duke wins that matchup if Allen's shot goes in.

Hopefully, you are not referring to me. I am a Duke fan, but have consistently expressed my concerns for next year and don't see next year's team as a real title contender unless "the field" is way down.

There are certain "unreasonables" around here that make you look like a UNC fan.
With Capel gone, will Ratty have to revert to building a program? ( Will all the cash bags now have a Pittsburgh address?) Will Goldwire actually sniff the court? Will O'Connel actually get a grown up haircut? Will the splinter brothers remember where the post is? Will the NCAA give them an exemption so they can play with extra balls? (despite not having any under pressure) Will someone finally tell me who Jack White is?

They likely would've lost to Villanova, but I don't see how you could watch the tournament and say there's "no way" Duke could've won. That's not how sports work. You can reasonably assess a team's win probability in a game, but you can't know what the outcome will be.
Duke was good enough to win it all this year. They were good enough to win it all last year, too. I breathe a sigh of relief every year when Duke loses, because Duke losing isn't destiny.
Duke will likely be good enough to win a championship next year, too. They probably won't win it all because no team has a better chance than the field, but they'll likely be very dangerous.
No Guarantee those Freshmen will all be studs, If one doesn't work out then they will be short handed depth wise..

Ok, that's a fair point. The tournament is definitely unpredictable, especially this year with Loyala's run and the first 16/1 upset. Here's what I will say, If Duke and Villanova played in the final four, and both teams played their best, Villanova wins. I think they were the best team in the tournament this year even though UVA got the top seed. `

The Division I Transfer Working Group will meet later this month to discuss much-needed updates to the NCAA transfer policy.
Two big changes are up for consideration, per the NCAA:
- Allow students who meet specific, high-achieving academic benchmarks to play immediately after the first time they transfer during their college experience.
- Allow prospective student-athletes who have signed a National Letter of Intent to transfer and play immediately if a head coach leaves the school of the student’s choice, as well as under other exceptions already in the rulebook. Because the Collegiate Commissioners Association manages the NLI, this idea would be referred to the CCA for consideration.

I agree, very fair assessment IMO.
You lose 2 5-star big men it is tuff enough but when it is dominant big men like Bagley and Carter AND you replace them with small forward like frames, that is just going to be a problem. I agree, Bolden is a key guy for them, I personally think Oconnel may be as well but how much PT can he get with those 5 stars ahead of him. To me, the freshman that I am most concerned with is Reddish but he can only do so much and especially with Zion and Barret building NBA resumes. Duke may be the most talented team in the country again next season but that talent mix IMO may not be as difficult to handle as the one that is now gone and unless they can get Carey to reclassify and gain eligibility for them next season they do not have a solution for their mix problem, IMO.
Nobody did less with more than dook. Anything less than a FF appearance with all that future 1st round talent is a huge underachievement.
