...break (for those who were bound and determined it had to be a "tantrum")

(from goheels) "It was on a Saturday hanging out with my roommates, Theo (Pinson) and John (Bumgarner)," Berry said. "We were playing NBA 2K...Theo beat me, and I was on the way back to my room and jokingly hit the door…I was joking around. My pinky finger caught the door frame, and that's what did it. I'm a college student. I know it's a mistake. I own up to it. It's because I'm competitive and don't like to lose."

Ahem, what did some of us say about how easy it is to catch something the wrong way just goofing around? --- same way a buddy of mine broke his thumb in college over a Nerf Basketball Horse game --- feigned anger over a missed shot. In other words he could've just as easily broken something with him and Theo doing one of their dance-offs or something.

(BTW: There's some good news there about where the break is and explains why he's just been wearing a brace instead of a cast --- and bodes very well for a quicker return!)

If it's what I think it is, it's a boxer's fracture. I've had this (punched a wall after a loss in beer pong during college, don't judge me) and it healed within like 3 weeks and I have no lasting effects at all...and although I was 22, I wasn't exactly getting the UNC medical staff level of treatment.

I keep reading all these “EXPERTS” listing their top players either in conference or the nation. Most have Gayson Allen ahead of Joel. That really pisses me off. Joel went through the whole tournament last year with not one bad wheel but two ( most of it) and he did not have to trip people in order to get the job done. To me this is common sense. JB also got clotheslined vs. Gonzaga by their 7 foot giant and he shakes it off and hits one of the biggest shots after Goss hits his 3pointer (which never should have happened considering Theo never touched the ball) JB comes right back and buries his 4th 3pointer. Plus, they are not giving Cam Johnson or Jalek any respect. It’s fine to fly under the radar. However Joel Berry has proved for 2 straight years what he brings to the table. Heart, Toughness and Winning.

Not surprising, media has this as Grayson Allen redemption season. Funny, I never seen a bad character guy that the media wants to WIN so badly. I wonder why? hmmmm

...and a helluva lot more talent than most like to give him credit for.

I've said on here for a while: Pre season rankings are great at illustrating how stupid many in the media are. I'd love to see the hit/miss ration with these things.

You mean to tell me Joel is not a head case, who makes poor decisions??? Some NBA gm going to look at this and say, he a bad kid. You mean to tell me he don’t need therapy???

Sarcasm for the slow people.

Was this actually speculation??? (I assume by rival fans)

Glad to hear that the injury may not be as bad as we first thought. Hopefully he will make a full recovery and get back on the court soon.

My wife blew out her knee in HS when someone called her name in the hall at school and she turned around to see who it was. Literally, turned and popped the ligaments in her knee. Weirdest dang thing I have ever heard of.

My youngest son broke his foot the first day of football practice in 8th grade running the ladder. no contact, no jumping around acting a fool, no stepping in a hole. Running a ladder on flat ground and he stepped and broke a bone in his foot.

At least when I broke my pinky finger in college it was trying to catch a pass in intramural football.

Point is, he JB wasn't doing anything dumb or being careless, he was being a normal human being and did something he and others likely have done hundreds of times with nothing going wrong. It happens. He will be fine and so will this team. We need to lighten up.

Your family needs to get some calcium in them

Just joking around!

Lmao. Yea that makes absolutely no sense. Sounds like my teenage son explaining the dent in his fender. But i dont give a rip one way or the other. Just heal up and learn from it.

Dude I like your comments but I am a little confused on this one. Are you saying that JBII is lieing about how he got the injury? Or are you saying that it makes not sense that he got sort of s freak injury?

I don't see what motivation he would have to lie about the cause of the injury. Just my opinion. Based on his explanation, it sounds like the injury isn't serious. If he returns healthy in 3-4 weeks, no harm done.

When JB comes back healthy and hungry all will be forgotten! When our now experienced PGs behind him have to play extended minutes all will be celebrated! When JB, 7th, and JF lead us deep in the Tourney, all will become part of the lore!

WOW! It's Good to be the King! (again)

I’m prob reading too much into it. He says he was joking around but then brings up hating to lose and being competitive. Which to me makes it sound like he was frustrated over losing. So anyway...whatever. No big deal to me either way.

If you only knew! My son has broken more bones than anyone I have ever known. Most were not due to contact in sports, even though he has played football, basketball and baseball since he could walk. I could go through the list, but suffice to say it is lengthy. We, too, wondered about his calcium and bone density. His ortho doctor (who played college football himself) said both were fine, but said we could up the calcium if it would make us feel better. We did for a while, but didn't see a difference. He is just a hard nosed player who goes all out all the time. Sometimes that means he gets injured doing stuff that isn't related to the sport or contact.

Anyway, my point is this incident with JB was nothing. People are making it out to be more than it is because WE get caught up in how well UNC basketball does and some almost view it as a slight against them that a kid would dare get injured doing what kids do. It really is silly when you think about it.

Get him to a psychiatrist....Stat!

Don’t be a pussy. You wanna call me out, tag me bro.

I see you’ve still not learned the word hyperbole since we last had any correspondence.

Just to clarify my position because apparently many of you idiots here have completely misinterpreted my original sentiment. I like Joel Berry. Very much. I agree with his own words that he made a mistake. In that moment, he used very poor judgement. He’s a leader and has to be above such. I’m sure he knows that.

Also, if video games make you that angry, get a grip.

Would one of you youngsters please explain what tagging is? I thought it had to do with graffiti! (I have been accused of being afraid to do it so I want to know my fears!)

For the purposes of a message board, it's when you include a person's screen name in your comment. Just put an @ before their screen name. Example, @gunslingerdick. If you do that, they will get a notification that you mentioned them even if you aren't replying directly to them.

I did when it was news. Then I didn’t anymore...until this thread was poasted and I see a few idiots here mischaracterizing my sentiments. I only poasted to clear the air. I said my piece.
I was referring to the tagging part, not your opinion of the situation.

I see you didn't include the part about how you were sure it would hurt his draft stock and his standing with "nba GM's". Or was that hyperbole too? No, I'm quite sure that was just you being a moron. Also, if one sentence on a message board "poast" make u this angry, get a grip. Take your Prozac.

It's probably a moot point because Berry doesn't really have much of a future in the NBA anyway but I like to argue with dipshits like you so I'll take this on. Again, you've misunderstood my feelings. His boneheaded move of breaking his hand won't drop him from the first round to the second round. But let's say Frank Mason was a senior this year. And he and Berry had similar stats at the end of the year. You don't think that a GM would take into account the fact that Berry had to miss a month of the season because he foolishly broke his hand after losing in a video game? Don't be so naive.

NBA scouts and FO staff take everything into consideration, so they would definitely look into this. But when they factor in his performance in last year's final four playing far less than 100%, I don't think this injury situation would hurt him that much. If he doesn't get drafted in the first round, or if he doesn't get drafted in either round, I think that would have more to do with their overall confidence in his ability as an "NBA" player.

I agree with that wholeheartedly. My point was simply that this is a bad look for a fringe NBA player attempting to show well his senior year and secure a draft position. That's it. I'm not sure why there would even be pushback on that notion.
