OOTB Carolina basketball discussion thread

When did they stop using ladders and start using steps to cut down nets? Makes sense but I've not noticed it before.
Just a safety protocol so the players/staff don't get injured if they fell or the ladder slipped from underneath. I think they started doing this after UConn won the NCAAT in 2011.

Pretty good

Pretty awesome to watch these guys. I hope they keep it rolling but whatever happens this sure was fun.

By the way, is there ANY doubt who the real MVP is of this turnaround? It is, of course, the OOTB Carolina basketball discussion thread. It was started after the loss to Louisville. It was still finding its feet and admittedly let one slip away against Duke. But then it started hitting its stride, albeit with a loss to the Hoos sprinkled in. Now it's operating at full throttle, mercilessly disposing of anyone in it's path. It cannot be reasoned with.

Man what an awesome tourney weekend! I love this feeling!

How about our boy Berry huh? Kid has been lights out for us. And not just this tournament. Brice was great, but Berry deserved that tourney MVP. He just would not let us shrink. Need a bucket? Berry got one. Need a steal? He's got one of those too. Really is turning that corner from being one of those good CarolIna guards into possibly one of those great Carolina guards. If he keeps it up his name will always come up in that discussion. And we all know what an honor it is to be lumped in with that group.

Berry didn't do it alone, however. Marcus played a good tourney as well. Smart finding other ways to score when his 3 ball wasn't dropping. His defense was also great. And Hicks? Man that was cold what he did after Virgnia made that 3 and he went back and just buried that turn around in the lane with contact.

Great job Heels! All of you boys!

Somewhere G7 is smiling and laughing at all of us.
My problem with him has, and always will be, his attitude towards those that disagree with him. He will never change the fact that he is a dbag, it's who he is. For the record, I mostly agree with him regarding Berry. I have always thought highly of Joel B. And I most definitely believe he and Marcus should have been our starting backcourt from the jump, regardless of whether or not Berry brought the ball up the court first.

Recorded the game and got thru watching. What the hell did Roy say to the guys About playing defense? Is it just me or am I wrong in thinking this has been nowhere to be found in the regular season.

It's Almost like he told them don't worry about it until the tourny and then turn it on. If this continues we are going to be tough to beat.

Roy's been drilling it into this year's squad that the '09 team didn't always bring the defensive intensity, but when they finally did... good things happened. Seems like I read an interview with Marcus or Brice where they joked about how often Roy has told them this story. Regardless, it looks like they are taking his words to heart and have decided to crank up the D.

Still, the perception is that the Heels don't play D, however we are in the top 3 or 4 in conference defensive stats for just about everything but our 3pt fg%:
2nd - Def FG%
3rd - Blocks/game
4th - Steals/game
3rd - turnover margin
1st - defensive rebounds

12th - 3pt fg%

One of our defensive weaknesses is falling for that shot pump fake . . it got us a couple of times last night, but, overall I saw a difference between last night and our 1st meeting with UVA. Thats a pump faking squad full time . .

Luke Kennard knows how to use that pump fake, and he uses it as well as Brogdon and Gill of UVA do.

Meeks, Jackson, Brice, Isaiah and Theo are some of our most notorious victims . .

I would qualify that with "if this continues, we'll be next-to-impossible to beat." Especially if we can get some 3's.

UVa helped us a little by going ice cold from the field at the end.

It was an awesome weekend. My faith in this team was officially restored following the UVA game. If they play with all their heart and still lose, I am good with it. Also, I will never buy into the hype machine radar tends to build every year.
Glad they won, and looking at the bracket, we seem to have a decent run ahead. Also glad dook is stuck away from home. Bty, go seahawks. Wilmington will explode if they can send them packing first game

Oh, and what the heck was up with Kenny Williams' minutes against UVA? I see in the live comments other people were freaking out like I was. But he gave us 6 quality minutes and helped keep the clamps on Virginia's back court. We've had a very weird but wonderful week of UNC basketball.

duke ain't beating baylor...as much as i would love for uncw to beat them, baylor could embarrass them.

other than that, i wish kentucky was somewhere else, and providence is pretty good in the backcourt, and they're tough as nails...it's a decent bracket, imo, especially if indiana were to beat kentucky.

I'm not one of those who feel our bracket is always the hardest, and don't even think this is as difficult as some, but the East is pretty brutal respectively. Two weeks ago this bracket would have scared the hell out of me. However, UNC's perimeter defense has been absolutely incredible lately. That bodes well against Providence, IU, or UK. You have to beat good teams to win so let's just do that.

Quick thoughts.

Hugely proud of these guys and what they have accomplished! Loved seeing this group of seniors get to cut down the nets.

Need to see a photo of Big Joel with the backboard-sized souvenir Adam Lucas talks about in his story.

What a battle that was, and a strong effort to finish strong. So many good things to note - Jackson doing good things like the late steal and breakaway despite struggling overall. Marcus with lockdown defense on the opponent's star player (and Kenny Williams holding it down for six minutes too!), Berry with timely threes, defense, and generally just being a leader. Brice inside and on the break. Pinson with the lob! Meeks and Hicks, too.

Bad calls are part of the game and you have to play through them to win, but that traveling call on Hicks when he was obviously pulled down to the floor, and the missed out-of-bounds call on the shot over the backboard were simply absurd.

After the ND game, I said I'd like to see them play like that seven more times. This one wasn't as dominant but just as sweet. Six more to go!

Continuing with today's levity, here are the favorite bands of all 68 67 coaches in the tournament. Anybody want to guess which cheese-eating sour puss never responded to the author's request?

Every NCAA Tournament Coach's Favorite Band

And since we're on the topic, I hope everyone has seen the pics of Roy clowning around after the ACCT with his hat on backwards and sideways. Say what you will but I love Roy's joie de vivre. He is at the opposite end of the spectrum from our archrival's coach, who always looks like it would physically pain him to crack a smile. Screw that guy.

You guys are killing me today. You've left me all alone over there on radar pointing out the fact that there is no conspiracy against UNC about the brackets. I thought strum was going to back me up, but he cut bait and ran after one post. I expected better from you guys. :)

I wish I had the time but those dudes are going overboard with the conspiracy theories. Yeah, our bracket looks tough on paper but just about everybody else can say the same.

Conversely I bet IU and UK fans are thinking damn we gotta play the Heels. Did you see how good they looked in the ACCT?

I don't know about the IU fans, but for some reason the UK fans are on our boards talking about how they were screwed too.

There's no conspiracy theory of "Let's screw Carolina". However I do find it hard to believe it's coincidence that Duke got a higher than deserved seed in a weak region - that seems to be a repeating pattern. They entered their conference tournament #19, barely beat a crappy NCSU team - and then lost to ND (a 6 seed) who then proceeded to get their doors blown off by eventual champion UNC. Conversely, UK entered their conference tournament at #16, and won the thing, and yet UK and Duke both get #4 seeds (with UK getting matched up with what appears to be a much stronger #1 seed). The fact that the Duke AD is on the committee, in my opinion, gives this point some legs.

As for the matchups - anyone who thinks the committee doesn't purposefully build regions to give some intriguing matchups is naive - MSU and UVA in the same region for the third straight year, MSU has bounced UVA in the previous two and this would be to go to the final four. The IU/UK 2nd round matchup after the two teams stopped playing each other in the regular season - whoever wins that game setting up another blue blood battle with UNC in the sweet 16. Texas and A&M in the west as a potential 2nd round game. Temple/Nova as a potential battle for Philly in the 2nd round. But I have no problem with this, and it does make it easier to market the games, and most likely draws some casual viewers that wouldn't otherwise be interested in the games. So I have no problem in them putting certain teams in the same region as other teams in order to create intrigue, as long as they're seeded where they should be (i.e. I don't care what #5 and #1 you match Kentucky up with if they're a #4 - but if they should be a #3, or a #6, don't make them a #4 just to create story book matchups [see the play on words there!? Story Book matchups... they're playing Stony Brook first round :p;)])

I don't think that seeding is bad. I can understand your point, but the SEC sucks, so a championship from them is not worth much. Dook has faced a tougher conference slate. Now excuse me while I go throw up after defending dook.
