OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

If they’re getting math based degrees, sure. But I suspect not. Keeping kids around longer to get them a worthless Liberal Arts and Humanities degree isn’t moving the needle.
But they will get the college experience that you so often talk about when players bolt early. And a worthless degree is usually better than no degree.

Speaking of degrees, there needs to be one based on athletics. Something where you would learn about finances, media, sports medicine, etc. These are things that will help these guys in the career they want. Even if they don't make it as a pro, that would be a valuable degree. Could help get them a job in a lot of areas of sports.

On April 3, 2023 at almost midnight, GG and his family will be watching Carolina players
cut down nets at NRG Stadium in Houston. He'll shake his head morosely and
mutter......."...that could be me right now...."
And not one Tar Heel fan on planet Earth will be thinking 'bout him or his momma.

I disagree on both of those now. The college experience that was once a valuable thing exist no longer. And while at one time I would have agreed that any degree was better than no degree at all, I can't say that anymore. In fact, I've done a 180. I think the less time kids spend in college, the better. Today, if you're not getting a math based degree and keeping your head down, going to class and then getting as far away from campus as possible, then you'll be infected with inane woke academia sponsored bullshit. Best to keep as many kids away from that toxic environment as possible.

I agree with you about less people going to college, but we disagree somewhat on the reasoning. That's kinda getting into politics though, so no need to **** this thread up with that.

completely false…and who’s needle are you judging?

fact is, if you’re student athlete and you graduate from your university, at minimum, you’re set in your state…is it mostly about relationships, sure…unless you’re a d-bag or a c u next tuesday, you’ve got it made.

If they give jobs to history majors, they'll give them to anyone.

So thoughts on blue white scrimmage?

Maye instant fan fav hitting a few 3s

9nly saw the highted version. Looks like we have the potential to fill the bucket. Hopefully leaky will remain the lockdown defender he has been and not focus to heavy on his shot.

Good to see a ball go thru a hoop!!!

Didn't watch, but looking forward to radar talking about Maye becoming as good as his brother and a possible all ACC player.

That's awesome. I didn't realize they had something like that. Maybe add something like an exercise science or whatever those course are called. Something that could help if you wanted to go into the medical/trainer side of it. I hope our staffs are highlighting that as something that allows them to stay around what they love even if they don't make it pro or when they retire.

ETA: Just noticed there is an exercise science class listed as a recommendation if you want to go the grad route.

I hope the best for maye. Heard he was good till his injuries. All we need is a fierce competition in practice and a game winning 3 against Kentucky his senior year and he will be legend.

Expectations are going to be... not just high... but, the highest! I hope HD can deliver something similar to last season. That's sort of the rub, I guess. When you go to the NCAAT Championship game, beat the dookies in the FF, and send K off with a W (at CIS and the FF), you've got a gigantic order to fill the following season.

He has the horses, for sure.

I appreciate the enthusiasm and there's a lot of reason to be hopeful of a great season.

The idea of mimicking the '82 SI cover was clever and, inspiring. But... it might have been a little more convincing if HD had a few more seasons under his belt. If HD has a sophomore season flop, it's going to be perpetual fodder for ridicule.

easily the favorite…it’s going to be fun.

we’re going up next weekend for “the tour” with our 16 yr old and staying a couple of nights.

I’m curious, what would you consider a flop this season? The expectation, after last season and the roster on paper, is a natty. Would anything but that be a flop?

I’m not trying to be a dick, I’m genuinely asking. I don’t really know what I think of the answer myself.

Unfortunately they will be too high. Easy to get knocked out of the NCAA tournament playing an average game against a bad match up or a team just plays out of their mind.

It's very difficult to get to the FF. I don't care how good your team is on paper, or their past record, or who is coming back, etc.. Lots of things have to fall into place at just the right time.

However, as I said, the Heels definitely have the personnel to get it done.

I don't really know, either. He's got all the personnel he needs. He's had one season and about 3/4 of that season was pretty bad. They finally got it on-track in the last month. Now, granted, once it got going, it went about as far as it could possibly go. It became one of the most memorable seasons in the history of the program. But... it's not Dean Smith 1982-level. DES had become a bonafide legend by '82, from 20 years of being a successful head coach.

He just got the extension. I guess whoever is in charge believes he's got what it takes. I just hope he and his staff can keep it more like March 22 and not November/December/January and February. I feel more confident than I did last season, for sure. I wonder what RW thought when he saw the SI facsimile. I know Roy would have NEVER done that, no matter how good his team might have been. I don't expect a repeat in the NCAAT. I hope the Heels are in the top 2-3 in the ACC, at least.

ETA: I really wanna see Armando to get his jersey in the rafters. He should have been ACCPOY last year.

premium depth, long and athletic, seasoned vets…the only things that would derail this train are injuries and dudes feeling left out.

by all accounts, this is a close group…tyler nickel is getting accroy hype,

I think we may be getting ahead of ourselves regarding our goals for next season. Firstly, the primary goal is to beat dook as many times as we play them while qualifying as an eight seed or better for the NCAA. That will be a step forward from this past season. We'll figure out 'secondly' later.

I'm actually curious to see what Scheyer-face, and his staff, are able to do with that vaunted program and the fresh group of ringer OADs that will be forgotten after one season.

Don’t be surprised if they steal one, or two, Eddo. It’s still the same rivalry. We’ll be the better program at the end. Bet on that.

trimble, tho…he’s kinda special as well.
Pretty interesting to see what potential depth they have this year compared to the iron 5 last year.

Dunn and Styles look better this year and Leaky looks a lot smoother and not so gangly and herky jerky on offense.

And with Nickel and Nance they should have enough shooting from their wings and shooting forward spots to make up for Manek - which are really big shoes to fill.

Love still seems to be the same disinterested Love. He'll hit the big shot but would we need the big shot if he played to his potential 98% of the time? Need to figure out how to get Nance involved. And I don't see Hubert expanding his bench much.

Tough game. They pressured all night and Love was lackadaisical with the ball. Looked disinterested. Nance will take a little time to assimilate and we were without 2 guys who will be part of the rotation. Our defense really picked up throughout the game. Not worried about our offense. That will be running on all cylinders soon enough.

However, there’s no doubt we’re going to miss Manek. You just can’t substitute his shooting. Other observations

Seth Trimble is going to be an absolute nightmare for opposing teams. His ability to pressure the ball is remarkable and his athleticism is a welcomed addition.

Nickel cannot guard anything. Nice help defense though when he got that block.

Dunn looks better and more athletic than I recall seeing last year.

Styles, ooof. I’m worried about him. His performance was ugly and was immediately pulled and Sat the rest of the game.

Bacot’s hair was worse than Styles’ play.

If we’re to win the title this year, it will be because Davis has leveled up to being the best player on our team.

Yeah, Bacot went in the wrong direction on this one. If I was starting over with this team Davis and Bacot would be my first 2 picks.
