OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

Whenever he would make a play, my buddy and I would incorporate the Hank Williams song "Kaw-Liga" with his name as a way of showing appreciation! It was a weird gesture, but we were (are) weird, anyway.

Damn this is sad. Echo the guys above, one of those guys you always want on your team because he does the dirty work and kept plays alive for our stars.

I took a look at his wiki page and found this:

"Okulaja was the first player in the history of UNC basketball who led the squad in scoring, rebounding, three-pointers made and steals"

That's a pretty amazing stat. I definitely agree with @gunslingerdick about him being under appreciated.

He was All-ACC first team as a senior. He shot 43% from 3. He would have thrived in today's game as he was a tall, multifaceted shooter - a prototypical Euro player before everybody wanted to be prototypical Euro players.

RIP, Tar Heel brother

This is the type of stuff that I think will actually help out college basketball in the long run. Having those borderline pro players come back. Someone like Bacot or Love might have left in years past trying to make money. Now those types of players will start to come back. You end up with a lot of experienced teams, which is better for the sport.

And, hopefully, more college degrees.

more money is in this unless you’re a lottery pick…it’s a win win for all.

Sure, may help us for basketball but it's gonna help universities like Alabama and the SEC in football. We may do Ok too but we're not a top tier fan base for football. We're getting better though.

disagree…it’s almost completely leveling the playing field in every sport…this is why saban is pissed, he feels threatened…the fans will also enjoy this much more because everyone will get to know these athletes

i’m not saying oregon st or texas tech will be powers, but carolina already has a brand.

Plus you are already locked in for multiple years in football. I don't really see it making much difference there.

If they’re getting math based degrees, sure. But I suspect not. Keeping kids around longer to get them a worthless Liberal Arts and Humanities degree isn’t moving the needle.
But they will get the college experience that you so often talk about when players bolt early. And a worthless degree is usually better than no degree.

Speaking of degrees, there needs to be one based on athletics. Something where you would learn about finances, media, sports medicine, etc. These are things that will help these guys in the career they want. Even if they don't make it as a pro, that would be a valuable degree. Could help get them a job in a lot of areas of sports.

I disagree on both of those now. The college experience that was once a valuable thing exist no longer. And while at one time I would have agreed that any degree was better than no degree at all, I can't say that anymore. In fact, I've done a 180. I think the less time kids spend in college, the better. Today, if you're not getting a math based degree and keeping your head down, going to class and then getting as far away from campus as possible, then you'll be infected with inane woke academia sponsored bullshit. Best to keep as many kids away from that toxic environment as possible.
