OOTB Carolina football discussion thread

Didn’t realize they had pulled the trigger. I’m actually pretty excited. The Mack is back

Or Kiffin. I know he's a head coach right now, but I would think being an OC at a Power 5 is better, especially if he's deemed the CIW.

Reminds me of when Dan Snyder hired Joe Gibbs. It didn't have the desired effect.

Brown is way past his effective prime. He hasn't coached in years. I'm disappointed already.

Definitely not expecting much if this is true.

If the rumors about his coordinators are true, then all he needs to do is flash the natty ring and manage games and the program. 67 isn’t that old. Roy is still doing a pretty damn good job

Weird hire but ok.

Why does everybody keep mentioning Chizik as a coordinator? I mean he was here and left, presumably because he wasn't interested in being here long term. Didn't move his family to Chapel Hill, etc.

He left because he didn’t want to relocate his kids in the middle of high school. Completely understandable move. Those kids will have grauduated by now though

He also has a connection with Mack. I wouldn't be completely surprised if it happens.

So where do you guys put the O/U for wins next year? Obviously will depend on the coordinators but I think we can get 8 wins with a really good DC. Maybe more if we get Kingsbury

Without knowing who the staff is, I'll say 5 wins since the schedule is tougher. With a good staff I could see 7 being possible.

That sounds about right!

I don't think this will end well, or even go very well. But, it's better than keeping Larry Fedora. I wasn't expecting much and won't expect much and I won't be disappointed.

I said before this became apparent that I wouldn't want Brown or Chizik, together or separately. I understand the safety of the hire, if it goes that way. Brown is well beyond his prime. I think he will regret this if he comes back. 20+ years later and the game has changed.

Roy never stopped coaching for 10 years, either. That hiatus is what bothers me.

It hasn’t been ten years. And he’s been working as an analyst pretty much the whole time so it’s not like he hasn’t been studying the game

Wonder how the quarterback situation will play out next year. We have 2 freshman that show a lot of promise and doesn't Surratt have eligibility left?

6 years, scuse me.

I've seen him on TV for years now, I know his job. He's way past his prime, that's all. And, Chizik was fired for a good reason. He left UNC. It's just, as Julez said, a weird hire... but ok.

I always liked Mack and was only disappointed, not upset, when he left for Texas. I know there are arguments against him being brought back (age and time away from the sideline being the biggest) but I'm glad to see him return. I'd love to have Bill Cower if Mack isn't really coming. LOL, but that's mostly the Steelers fan in me.

I’m just pointing out that it isn’t like he’s been away from football. Chizik had a perfectly respectable reason for leaving UNC. Sure, it’s a little weird, but we could’ve done a lot worse.

I saw the T-Shirts for sale already. This was planned for a while. I dunno what options they passed-on, but it's done now

I'm not expecting much from this. The Mack Brown well is dry. But, it might (huge emphasis on might) get some fan interest back in the stands for a season, maybe two. It's not 1997, or even 2007.

I feel sure that Mack Brown can evaluate talent. He's got a natural gift for that, I'd say. I just don't think this decision will be what is needed long-term. More than anything, this makes me wonder who declined the job offer.

Mack may have been willing to take lower pay than other options while providing a transition as we finish paying off Fedora. I’m no insider but that seems like a reasonable possibility.

This is a quick and easy fix to our problems. But it is not anywhere close to the best fix for our problems.

Some tx writer broke the brown to unc story yesterday with the claim that he would bring chizik.

piggybacking off that writer...i listen to a sports radio station out of dallas every weekday and they said the same thing this morning before it broke today...he said chizik and possibly kingsbury would come...i have my doubts about kk because i think he’s destined for the nfl, but a stop here under a ceo type like brown would be huge for him.

He will also be made aware of the offensive weapons we have returning next year. If he had time to put in his system then we would see some serious offensive numbers.

I just want to beat USuCk. I hate those fukkers

Apparently no one else was offered the position.

Is Mack going to turn the program around? No. But he's certainly more appetizing than the laundry list of bozos I saw being tossed around. Out of all the people that would have accepted the position, I actually do believe Mack is the best option we had.

Why all the angst about this being short term and a band aid? Yea he wont be around 20 yrs but easily could do 5-7, maybe more, and in the process establish a winning program with a pipeline of decent recruiting classes to carry another couple years for a protege to step in long term. If he retires 7 yrs from now leaving a roster of 4 top 20 recruiting classes and we’re a perrenial top 20 team and competing for the acc title i’ll be fking ecstatic

If he brings chizik and kk then the hire is a homerun. Thats the strongest staff in the acc and one of the best in the nation. No way any other of the candidates mentioned would bring that talent and experience.

That's what it sounds like. I heard on local sports radio where Scott Satterfield said he wasn't even contacted about the job. It sounds like Bubba was working on this for awhile now.
I've heard that Satterfied wasn't entirely truthful when he was talking about that.

I don't know if Mac is the right hire or not but I do know I'm excited about football next year and I haven't been like that in a while

Still not sure about the hire. I like Mack but concerned about the age factor. It will be used against us in recruiting teams saying he won’t be here that long because of his age.

That’s where I’m at too.

More than anything, I want to see who is in his staff. There is potential for this to turn out great if Mack is “all in” on turning UNC around.
I'm hoping he's coming in with a chip on his shoulder. He didn't like how things ended at TX. I want him to come in with the attitude that he wants to show everyone he's still got it and can turn around the same school twice. Basically give TX and the rest of college football a big f**k you.
