My niece, who is a Clemson grad/sorority girl basically did the same when we had contact yesterday evening. My response was that GA exposed them and even if they make it into the CFP, they'll be embarrassed again once there. At least Carolina wasn't pretending to be a national power at this point, so what did she really have to look forward to? And then I reminded her that basketball starts soon. She suddenly changed topics.

I'd love to get embarrassed in the CFP because that means an ACC championship and/or a top 12 ranking.

except with us it would be opening the door to 'see, I told you they were just a basketball school' and 'see, I told you the ACC sucked butt', and 'see, I told you that the automatic playoff invite to conference champs is BS.'

But why do you mention this, are you thinking we might have a chance?

I was going to start a thread on the BH board, but I'll start here, instead. I'll begin by asking @tarheel0910 ...

Is the University of North Carolina... ummm... how do I say this... is it lacking in donor money Can it generate the same amount as Miami, or FSU, or even Clemson? Does it have the sources for the revenue to basically BUY a winning football program? If it doesn't, then that's all I need to know. I appreciate anyone--- anyone who really knows--- offering insight.

I heard someone say that the higher-ups at UNC saw (or see) college football as an "evil." And, so, they have never wanted to really have a perennial powerhouse program- like Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, Alabama. If that is true... who are these people and how did they ever reach that conclusion?

Well, they are already saying we are a basketball school and the ACC sucks. I have no problem with people saying the automatic invite was a bad idea and using ACC conference champ UNC as an example.

I honestly don't know the NIL situation for those schools, but my guess would be no for football. For other sports, maybe, but no one cares about the other sports. That's just one part of the equation, though. The other part is being willing to spend what you have. Hubert would fit into the not willing category. Based on Mack's use of the portal, my guess is he would use it if he had it. But why would anyone want to give money to the football team? Especially after yesterday.

There's no like minded higher-ups that have gotten together as a brain trust to hold football down. Some hardcore football fans (woad) are looking for a scapegoat and conspiracy. Basketball is king at UNC because it's a blue blood and people pay attention to that. But football has gotten more money than any other sport.

If the $$$ isn't there, then I get it.

College sports are just like pro sports, now... from what I can tell. I realize UNC isn't a football franchise business like the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers exist to support a football team franchise/business model.

I guess, at this point in college sports evolution, you roll with what you have. If a school isn't known for domination in a sport by now, they likely never will. Any success at a formerly-lackluster place would simply result in the established powerhouse offering them more money and off they go... sorta like Mack Brown in 1997.

Had a race yesterday so just got home and am watching it now. Halfway through the 2nd quarter and this is just brutal.

Mack needs to step down. And if he won’t do it on his own then Bubba needs to step up.

With the way recruiting nose dived, next year’s roster will be less talented than this one. There isn’t some highly touted young QB recruit waiting in the wings. The two biggest offensive weapons on the roster will be gone. The schedule isn’t likely to be this easy either. Could be looking at 3-4 wins next year.

I’d love for someone to explain to me how this program could possibly be heading in the right direction. It’s bad and all signs point to it getting worse.

Bubba doesn't beat his own drum and a certain poster needs a little more understanding of how our football program fares against our basketball program. It's really pretty obvious. There isn't some cabal of UNC PTB in trench coats conspiring to actively keep our football program suppressed, it's true. But if football was allowed nearly the same respect and standing as basketball, we'd have national championships (or near) under our belt.

We had one opportunity to truly capitalize on our potential, and that was when someone (sorry, can't remember who) in a position to throw his weight around said enough is enough, we're going to have the football program we deserve. And Butch Davis was hired. Of course we know how that turned out and the people who think football is something dirty to be held at arm's length found themselves back in the groove with their chorus of 'told you so'..

That tells the tale. At any other institution, the blood would have been wiped off the bloody nose and they'd have been right back in the saddle. But not here. Fedora was a safety hire and Bubba was a safety hire and Mack was just a sentimental Mr. Clean favorite of those who want to pretentiously put lipstick on the pig even though it's kept in the barn as much as possible. In order to have a good football program, you can't pretend you don't need to wallow in the mud a little.

Just for the sake of honesty I was very firmly against re-hiring Mack, but once he got here I changed my tune in a big way. OOPS. I'm back to singing that old tune again, and I'll be the most surprised guy on the planet if Bubba has much to say about Mack's future. The one thing that will get things moving is the incredibly empty stadium we just saw. The problem is that when they decide something needs to be done to fill those seats, they'll do something half-ass in band-aid fashion.

I hope I don't sound bitter. Do I sound bitter? OK, I'm bitter.

nil is being done different at carolina, someone needs to just say it…football is the money maker everywhere except certain places; kentucky and louisville for example.

here in columbia and now that we have a student at clemson, it’s a collective…lol we were actually invited to a party to explain how clemson is different by the dollar…the problem at clemson is dabo is not in the portal…they are acquiring and keeping the sa’s there because it costs $200,000(as a donor) to be a big dog there…if i had a kid as a freshman and i wanted to have a suite and a parking spot, its $200,000 to just get started…if you just want to be a person with a parking spot, it’s $5,000…and that money isn’t only for football.

and trust this, there is a waiting list for a $5,000 parking spot and a $200,000 iptay membership…we looked into it for a parking spot…it’s an operation everywhere now, should teach a class on how to massage the nil client.

I think playing a little dirty has historically been a necessity for building a great football program. But now I just think you need the money. It’s all out in the open now. Nothing to be ashamed about anymore.

To be elite in football, Carolina would need to be prepared to pay somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-15 million a year for a top level HC and staff. Then another 10-15 million for NIL funding to build a roster.

There’s no football prestige here so you gotta overpay for coaches and players if you want to lure them to a non-elite program. So those numbers might still be a little conservative.

yes you're right, but this is a recent development, and the money comes from having a worthwhile program to support. I hope I'm wrong, but I see an extended stay in limbo for us. Or maybe purgatory. OK, it's gonna be hell.

I agree. I think it would take a huge head coaching hire to convince people that Carolina was going to be serious about football. Then maybe they could get some serious money moving. Gotta win right away though to take it to the next level.

It’s never gonna happen but that’s the model I imagine would have the best chance.

it could happen with the right hire, but the people who don't hold football down will continue to hold football down by not giving it its due.

Detractors argue otherwise, but I thought Butch almost came up with a miracle and in short order.

If NIL had been implemented before he was hired that might’ve done the trick.

Or if some dipshits could’ve just kept their mouths shut instead of ‘flexing’ on social media…

well yeah, even our own fans have historically (and numbnuttedly) said we are just a basketball school. This is them saying it when we get our asses kicked in the playoff, and they would now have us getting our asses kicked in the playoff to back them up.

the flexing was an unfortunate fact of life once it was done. That didn't mean it was the end of the world, worse has happened at other schools who more or less shrugged it off after making the obligatory conciliatory moves. It actually served or should have served a useful purpose, to be a wakeup call and warning against the NCAA's (at that time) worst nightmare, pro agents taking away the facade of amateurism. I'm sure adequate controls and oversight would have been installed and adhered to by Butch at that point.

All that was needed was what was always needed....a decent amount of 'want to'. The string-pullers didn't have the 'want-to', and we suffer for it.

We didn't need for NIL to be in place for Butch to have put us in the forefront to build on. He almost did so even having been hamstrung by the NCAA.

Well, when you put it that way I guess a conference championship isn't important enough to outweigh the comments made by mean people.

butch was huge and i’m sure it’s a scary thought now…however, post butch, and now in this pool we’re in, shouldn’t carolina be prepared?…remember, the thought was “unc wasn’t ready for big-time football”…when bama has 20 more compliance officers than unc, it’s an issue.

i don’t know what a serious hire is anymore…how the hell would carolina be in on lance leipold when he’s at kansas compared to say dave aranda?…and who’s to say the jmu coach that got a dumpster fire together in six months isn’t the new spurrier?

we had this discussion I think last year. The problem with backing into a playoff berth and then getting annihilated is that many of those making the mean comments would be potential recruits who happen to be talking to other recruits. They do that. Recruits want a number of things when choosing a school, and high on the list is to be on a big stage looking good. Being on a big stage and looking like crap isn't on the list at all, one would think.

Plus we deal with the conference again. How beneficial is it to wear the title of conference champ if you trash the conference in the process.

I could be wrong, but I think it's not a good thing for recruits to see you get exposed and then make mean comments about it. I think it's just about as bad for them to hear others make the mean comments. Especially when 'the others' are the other programs recruiters.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to win the ACC champ and make the playoff...when we're ready to show up.

you didn't ask me but my point is that it doesn't matter about being prepared if you aren't serious about success to begin with. And if you aren't serious about success, you probably aren't looking to hit a home-run type of hire.

having thought about this, the best position group is receiver…give it to galloway, let him hire/fire whoever, and let roll…if it doesn’t work in three years, work as in progress(lol i don’t know what that is), you move on.

but yes, the elephant in the room is how/who do you hire…unc isn’t even auburn or even ucla.

Okay... can that amount be generated? If you're not sure, that's cool. That was my basic question earlier. Can UNC pay for the goods, if the goods are available?

Then, my other concern is; If you find a coaching staff that can put a winning program together... will they stay at UNC? I mean, if you found a gem somewhere that popped (sorta like Dabo did-- no one saw that coming when he was hired), would they haul ass like Mack Brown in 1997?

i don’t know what happen internally when butch was hired, but i know what happened everywhere else…i’m telling you, programs took notice as did recruiters…my neighbor was the former d-cord at sc and he said in 2011 “y’all are getting serious now”.

your point about being prepared might not have even been taken seriously, but i’m sure a guy was at miami and coached in the nfl knew what it took to get and keep athletes…not that it took money, etc, but it takes care and time…it takes someone saying, “no, you can’t sign your name for money” and “you can’t get free tattoos”.

Sorry, but I'm not taking the time to read all that when it's an argument against a conference championship.

do you like the guy that just kicked our ass?…he put that program together in less than a year…he’s 30 something

I said, in the game thread on BH, "can we trade coaching staffs?"

Mack Brown is a cool guy and I can imitate him easily. But, he is WAY, WAY, WAYYYY past his prime.
