OOTB's Political Thread . ..

I want someone who is not a fan of the wall being built to tell me how we're going to cut down on illegals entering the country at the southern border. If there is no wall, what do we do.

I think a wall will be more costly and less effective than its worth. I've somewhat tongue in cheek brought up the sniper towers before. Pretty extreme, but the point is that we need to make getting caught in the country illegally to be worse than whatever they're trying to leave in their home country. That will cause the vast majority of attempts to cease.

Right now, if you're entering the country illegally (or overstaying a visa, or whatever)... you have a low percentage chance of getting caught, and if you're caught, you get essentially a slap on the wrist (metaphorically speaking of course, we would never assault an illegal immigrant) and sent home. Well, why not rinse and repeat? Eventually you're gonna get through the cracks.

What's tough is that some people are escaping pretty horrendous situations, and that anything short of killing them wouldn't be a severe enough consequence to act as a deterrent, yet others live a pretty decent life and are just looking for a few extra bucks, and something like making them be a Duke fan would be severe enough punishment to make them reconsider.

So we need to do something in the middle. Would waterboarding and releasing be too extreme? Maybe. Beating the crap out of them and releasing may be a good deterrent, but unlikely to get support. We could get some sort of work out of them. Everyone caught has to do 6 months of hard labor - doing trash pickup, or maybe getting them to build a wall of sorts themselves. Hell, we could make each one of them donate a kidney and a chunk of their liver so Americans on the kidney and liver transplant lists could be helped out.

I still don't think it ever gets done. I never have. I think its just something to rally his base. Of course, if he doesn't build it, what will his constituents do? I'm guessing nothing because most people have taken up residence on one side or the other, and it doesn't matter what their side does anymore. It's like religious zealotry.
I know you're not proud of it but make no mistake, you are part of his base....

Are you evading the question because you don’t have an answer or you’re just needling me?
I don’t adding a wall will make any meaningful impact. As Hark said, it’s an issue of supply and demand and the worst punishment we dish out is a walk in the park for these people. They’ll find a way.

Further, they make a small segment of people coming in. The majority are people who overstay their visas.

National security? No known terrorist has come in via the southern border. They come in through airports.

Drugs? They’re all brought in through ports of entry on trucks, boats, or vehicles.

Lastly, as @UNC71-00 has pointed, our economy is largely dependent on cheap labor. We need a lot of them. We certainly don’t need to close the border as you suggest.

At the end of the day, immigration is so far down my list of concerns I don’t even know where to rank it.

That address was...something.

To think a guy like James Monroe and a guy like Donald Trump had the same position in this country is a wild wild reality.

I can tell you precisely what to do and i guarantee it will be 1000% successful in preventing any and all illegals from walking across the mexican border

QUIT GIVING THEM JOBS

Illegals come here to make money. Period. Dont buy the rw bullshit that they’re here for free stuff. They’re not here to eek out a living on welfare. They are here to make money. More money in 5 yrs than they would make in a lifetime normally. And we accomodate them with open arms and open check books and look the other way regarding their immigration status cause we like the cheap labor. No 30ft wall or 40ft or 50ft added to the obstacles they ALREADY overcome to get here will do a godamn thing to change it. Thats the immigration problem. Enforce the laws already on the books if you’re serious about keeping illegals out. But we’re not serious cause we know food prices will sky rocket. The wall is just a symbol of right vs left and is useless.

You actually watched it?

Of course. I try to watch all addresses/SOTU/debates/etc.

Part of the reason is what you said earlier, it's hard to trust the media these days so reading about anything after the fact is a crapshoot. You don't know what's real or not without actually watching and forming your own opinion on it. At least that's how I see it.

I get what you're saying, but they all lie. To me, listening to them is largely a waste of time. I follow what they actually do, not what they say.

According to the illegals i worked landscaping with it cost about 5k ( about a yrs pay) to get across the border illegally. Usually took several weeks enduring miserable conditions. Packed in backs of box trucks, walking miles for days in the desert. So we’re gonna add scaling a 30 ft wall to this and expect them to just turn around. Bwahahahaha!!!!!

My guy who does handyman stuff on my house told me he came via Canada. Flew there then said it wasn't tough, did the back of a truck thing also.

Both of you......Reported!

It’s sharks. Sharks with laser beams. Alligators with laser beams? That’s absurd.

Agreed, except for a slight variation of the bolded part. For some, even living solely on welfare would be better than what they're leaving behind. But I agree that the vast majority wouldn't come/stay here just to be on welfare. However, working a fairly low wage job under the table and receiving welfare simultaneously can produce a pretty decent living. So we need to curb the hiring, as well as the handouts for these people.

I grew up in an area that had lots of low income families. You'd be surprised at how many people, both legal and illegal, that would hop out of a Mercedes at the grocery store and pay with food stamps. Need to attack the issue from both sides.

This. It's better for many people to work 20 hours a week and be subsidized than to work 40 hours a week. Of course, then you have the issue of illegals driving down wages. It's just a complete mess and it needs to get fixed somehow.

I love it when they string together total nonsense. Dubya was a master. I miss his daily calendars.

I remember when he used to call in on the Howard Stern radio show and talk in his own moron language. He's a genius to be able to successfully market his own unique brand of total bullshit.

Come get mine...bullets first.

What a terrible analogy. You're comparing my constitutional right of owning a gun to people from another country (that are not protected by our constitution) coming in the country illegally.

Not your best work here, @ticket2ride04

Hardly.

I’m just making fun of an emotional, retarded argument that people use to justify something they want.

People use it for cigarettes, guns, booze, drugs, and now walls.

I continue to be perplexed by the pushback when we're talking about securing our borders. It is bizarre to me that all Americans wouldn't want that.

The bottom line for me is any step in the direction of securing our borders is the right move.

The Dems don't want it because they've lost so much of the working class, due to their technocratic and globalist nature. It also doesn't help that blacks are starting to walk away from the party as well. They need a new motivated source of minorities that they can keep on the plantation and exploit for their votes.
