The last day for Division I men’s basketball players to enter the transfer portal in 2025 is Tuesday, April 22. The poster that is the closest to the actual number portal entries for 2025 is the winner. If there is a tie, I will do a tiebreaker. See summary table in red below.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of Division I men’s basketball transfer portal activity for 2023, 2024, and 2025, along with outcomes for those who transferred, and a projection for 2025:

2025????

  • 2025 Projection: Based on current trends and the portal's open days, the final number is projected between 2,190 and 2,360 entries by the time the window closes.

What Happens After Entering the Portal?

2023 Outcomes

  • Transferred to Another D-I School: 551 players (49% of entrants)
  • Withdrew from Portal: 110 players (10%)
  • Did Not Transfer/Unknown Outcome: ~40% (remained uncommitted, went to lower divisions, left basketball, or graduated)
  • Graduated or Re-entered Portal: No precise public data, but NCAA research and reporting suggest a significant portion of uncommitted players either graduate, drop to lower divisions, or re-enter the portal in subsequent years.

2024 Outcomes

  • Transferred to Another D-I School: Data not finalized, but trends suggest a similar or slightly lower percentage (~45–50%) as 2023.
  • Withdrew from Portal: Estimated around 10%.
  • Did Not Transfer/Unknown Outcome: ~40–45% (remained uncommitted, went to lower divisions, left basketball, or graduated).
  • Graduated or Re-entered Portal: Many uncommitted players either graduate or re-enter the portal the following year, but exact numbers are not published.

Key Takeaways & Trends

  • Portal Growth: The number of D-I men’s basketball players entering the portal has increased sharply, from 1,120 in 2023 to over 1,700 in 2024, and is projected to surpass 2,000 in 2025.
  • Transfer Success Rate: Roughly half of portal entrants successfully transfer to another D-I program each year. The rest either withdraw, move to lower divisions, leave basketball, or graduate.
  • Repeat Transfers: A notable portion of players who do not find a new home or are dissatisfied with their new situation re-enter the portal in subsequent years, though exact repeat rates are not formally tracked.
  • Graduation: Some uncommitted players use the portal as a step toward graduation or as a means to explore graduate transfer options.

Now that this contest is closed, can you point us to the site where the "real" number will be shown?

How do you plan to deal with the seniors who entered without knowing if they have eligibility? I imagine it would be hard to remove them, and they are "in the portal" so I guess they count, but they distort the number of "real" portal players.

The portal officially closes tonight at midnight. The site is https://www.verbalcommits.com/transfers. When I announce the winner, I will explain how I arrived at the winner. Give me a few days.

Sad commentary when that many peeps want to leave! BUT in light of that number, why would anyone feel such urgency to complete their rosters 2-3 days after the portal opens? It is clearly a symptom of the times we live in so I don't think we can use it as evidence against any specific coach!

I hate this system but it is within the rules so I guess I'll have to adjust. We are fortunate that our staff has been able to address every need identified and it seems that they might not even be done!

I feel great about our team and I am optimistic that we will field a more balanced roster!

If we weed out ineligibles and walk ons, my guess has a chance, lol!

Go Tar Heels!
