Thread about Running

Read that article a little while ago. I was on the LR forums earlier and the hate for him there is insane. He’s obviously an insanely talented runner and they act like he’s some kind of hobby jogger
I was in Atlanta to watch the OT in person. We had a couple women who coach us in Minneapolis run in the trials under the B standard.

it was a fun and exciting event to watch. Because they do 3 8 mile loops then add onto the last loop you get to see them several times. Galen Rupp just ate up the couple guys who went out fast, early.

I ran the marathon today which want exactly the same course but the area is quite hilly and very windy. Very tough to post a fast time and maybe not the best place to decide who should be in Olympics. Overall it was a great weekend here. Finishing in the centennial Olympic Park (from 1996 summer Olympics) was very cool.

I seriously considered driving down there for the race. If I was still in clemson then I would have made the trip

I've been trying to keep up discipline of running some, but it is sort of hard when every race for foreseeable future is cancelled. Admittedly, race cancellations are first world problems, compared to becoming ill, losing your job or business, having to forego needed medical treatments, etc.

I was supposed to run Tokyo Marathon March 1 for my 6th and final world major but it was cancelled.
Was signed up to run Boston Marathon in mid-April, but it was postponed until September. Most of my run friends think it will be cancelled, but that would be the first time in 124 years when it didn't occur. I think they will hold out as long as they can.

I try to run 3-5 days a week still, and try to be at / over 30 miles on my week. But the motivation can be hard when I'm not training for anything, and no big run group to hold me accountable.

16 week training for Boston Marathon on Sept 14 would begin this Monday, Memorial Day.

Beer after runs always sounds great to me. :)

I’m still running but not getting in a ton of volume. Usually between 3-5 miles a day with an occasionally longer run. Now that the parks are opening back up I’ll try to start building up the mileage again

I am, but I'm lucky to have access to trails to keep it interesting. I've got a race in southern California in September. Not sure if it will happen or not. If it's cancelled, I'll make up my own "event." We do things like that from time to time. Tried to "run" straight through from Grandfather Mountain to Mount Mitchell a couple months ago, but we called it off a little over halfway through because it was taking too long and with Mount Mitchell State Park closed at the time, we'd have had a six mile hike back to the nearest car access after we finished.

How long of a "run" would that be? Never even thought about trying that but it's practically right in my backyard.

91 miles, if I recall correctly, not counting the 6 mile hike back to the car, which is now eliminated since the park is open. 95% of it is the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Taking the Parkway would probably be shorter. LOL.

Hahaha. I felt the same way when I quit. Not sure what you'd like but you could also do it to Table Rock Mountain (NC) and be under 40 miles (I believe.) It would be a Peak-to-Peak.

The MTS trail can be a rough one for a longer run. Constant rollers and just enough roots and rocks to make you stay on your toes.

That would be a fun one though. I’m gonna have to start thinking about some serious training adventures for the next few months if I decide to pull the trigger on Pinhoti.

I've stuck with Salomon for years but recently got some La Sportivas and a pair of Hokas on sale. Both are comfortable and work well but not enough to make me change brands.

the MST goes right by the store. We always had snacks and other stuff to give the through hikers.

Elkin really embraced the MST. It's probably been good for tourism. Not a lot of through-hikers, but plenty of day hikers, I imagine.

injury question...i’ve been pretty fortunate in not suffering a major injury or even one that keeps me off the road longer than 2-3 weeks; it band, plantar, some hip stuff...i can attribute these to not properly stretching afterward or poor form.

now it seems it’s something weird...yesterday i was 2 miles in and pain...felt like the tongue of my shoe/top of sock was pulling the hair from the front of my leg where the ankle - shin meet...i stopped, pain left, adjusted as if the sock or shoe was tight, moved on...got almost seven in and had to stop...walking with flip flops is okay as is barefoot, but it’s really stressing with a shoe on...sore to touch but no pain just sitting or standing.

any idea wtf this could be?????

It has been a while, but I recall having something sort of like that, almost like a contusion or bunyon, hard swollen spot on the sort of top of foot right where it connects to your shin.

This likely isn't your issue, but it seemed to me to be from where maybe the tongue didn't lie right against top of foot, or that I had laced my shoes too tight, where the shoelace maybe had direct contact with sock, top of foot. And icing the area.

I don't know if a foot specialist could help. I just relied on ice, and on tying my shoes looser, but still being able to have them tight enough to run. But what you have sounds more painful than anything I had. It seems my issues were with shoes that weren't ideal for me. I am a pronater (flat feet, that roll inward on impact) - so I need stability shoes: Asics Gel Kayano; Hoka Arahi - and for trails: Hoka Speed Goats.

Best wishes

I’ve had some issues on occasion with my shins and the top of my feet.

It’s certainly not a cure all, but I find that when I stay on top of post run stretching, and do some leg days to maintain muscular balance, those little niggles mostly stop happening.

Roll out the hammies and quads too, but not right on anything that is hurting

Didnt you just recently make a shoe change? Could be going through the new shoe blues haha

thanks for the input.

narrowing it down a bit, but it appears it could be anterior tibial tendonitis.

also being introduced to “lace bite” which i never knew was a thing.

What I always did in cases like that was look up a diagram of the foot, figure out the name of the tendon/ligament that was bothering me and tell my podiatrist running friend about it and ask him what to do. No matter which it was, the answer was always the same. Rest, ice, etc...

I ran across lake park blvd yesterday to get to the shukin shack ahead of another couple i saw heading that way who I knew would get the last table. Had a steam pot with beers and numerous oyster shooters and watched football. That’s worth running for.

Hoka project carbon x 2 is on youtube now if anyone wants to follow along. Lots of national and world record attempts in progress.

Walmsley is going for the 100k record which would take a herculean effort

Guess we got almost-herculean. 11 seconds short of the WR, but crushed the US Record. He probably wasn't used to all that asphalt.

Jim Walmsley Project Carbon X2 - Walmsley Misses 100K World Record by 11 Seconds (runnersworld.com)

I can't even wrap my head around running at that pace for 6 hours... just ridiculous. I saw some people on LR forums saying he might have been given some bad splits in the last mile or so. Which might explain why he kept checking his watch, because their numbers weren't matching up with what it was telling him? Idk...
