Tony Bradley declaring for the draft and may hire an agent...

How bout I throw a monkey on the Bradley wrench .. What if Joel Berry doesn't come back for his senior season (which I personally think he will). Without Berry Tony may think he may not have as stellar a season without Joel around and bolts for some fast money. But I think they both return because of the strength of this years draft... jmho.
At this point Tony's decision has little or nothing to do with JB's... which is yet another indicator that some heads are in the wrong places.

Most everywhere I look, Felton seems to be the forgotten man.
.
Unfortunately some recruiting guys created a narrative that Jalek is better at the 2, which is simply not true --- he just ended up playing there a lot in AAU. Truth is last summer his team was trying to let Leaky play PG which honestly was just a novelty and frankly silly --- but when it got to crunch time Jalek took over.

I think (hope) that Roy knows PG is where Jalek's future is. Hopefully it'll be another season before he starts there, but if JB leaves Jalek is the ONLY logical choice to start from day-1. If Roy gets stubborn and tries to force things with 7th there it will not end well. I have high hopes for Mr. Woods but PG ain't in his instinct set. Let the kid play off the ball where he won't have to worry about spacing, floor-balance and directing traffic.

Would you happen to have winning lottery #'s for the next drawing too.

Been reading on here for a bit now. I don't chime in on everything but I do read a lot. I don't know u from Adam but you come across as a know it all. Not trying to be an ass, just being honest.

Y'know what? I won't touch that part, but I'm also not gonna apologize for knowing a lot about the game and the team and having info and/or an informed opinion and sharing it on a Carolina basketball board.

I'm happy to discuss any of it in a civil manner... or if it bothers you it's quite easy to ignore it.

I am sure it's not the first time you have ever been told this.

This is what I'm talking about, this is simply their/your opinion. Which at this stage just may very well be true. Players change and develop which I'm pretty sure u know. In college, he might be better off the ball. We just don't KNOW yet. For what it's worth, I enjoy reading your stats and stuff.

Nothing more hilarious than a one-sided argument! Ignore is a wonderful drug!

I'm currently preparing to try to act humble for the next few seasons as UNC rakes in the recruits and becomes a fixture in the FF!

Come join the Fun at UNC (University of National Champions!) Mr. Knox and Mr. Brooks!

Fact - Felton was listed as a SG at the JBC
Fact - some recruiting sites has Felton as a SG or combo guard

What did Gary say that was so out of the blue? (Maybe where you belong).

I appreciate that, but I stand by the assessment (which is one that every coach I know in AAU agrees with). I will say that Jalek will need to discipline himself in college (which I'm sure Roy will have no problem reminding him), but again, the biggest reason he got the off-ball rep was because he played a lot there in AAU. Ironically he was in an almost opposite situation from 7th in that 7th dropped in rankings when he switched to PG in AAU, where Jalek dropped some by not playing there enough.

Why did 7th switching to PG cause him to drop?

Why did 7th switching to PG cause him to drop?
Honestly? Because he was a fish out of water. He wanted to switch because some folks told him he needed to for his pro future since he wasn't gonna grow any more --- which is understandable --- but it just didn't go very well. And again to be honest, we saw why this season.

7th is a potentially spectacular athlete who excels at attacking the rim and finishing in transition. He is a streaky shooter who totally lost confidence in his shot this season, and while some of that is mechanics, I believe a good part of that was being overwhelmed with the responsibilities of playing Point (which is the most mentally demanding position in our system). I'm sure Roy promised him time at PG, and he does have some good passing chops, but the instincts for spacing and floor balance and setting up passes with passes are lacking.

7th played at a private school where he was the best guy by a mile and was a prolific scorer. The question was could he (like Marcus and JB who were also scorers in HS) also be able to run a team. So far it does not look promising. Look at it this way --- Nate played PG all through HS but still struggled all through college with the instinctive feel for spacing and when and where to take the ball, which is why Roy eventually moved him off the ball for the most part. Nate got better at running Point but it was still a marked fall-off from JB or Marcus. I am not optimistic that 7th will fare any better. I'd rather see him with the freedom from that burden. Hs athleticism will make up for any lack of size off the ball.

If every AAU coach agrees with you then why was he not starting at PG on his AAU team?

This may be one of the greatest fails in the history of TI! You are100% total, complete, unmitigated, Oprah sized ass!

Sure hope you're wrong Mike. I think that would be a big mistake by Tony and would be a huge blow to next year's team.

As for Gary's statement, reading comprehension is important. He said "all the AAU coaches I know...", not "all AAU coaches". Big difference there, Dadika.

This draft is loaded. Next draft is weak.
I'm not challenging your assessment, but it seems like we hear this most years. And it usually makes sense. We look at the mocks for this year and next and this year's looks much stronger.

But . . . Then some of the guys in this year's mocks decide to wait a year. And then other guys - both guys on the mocks and others that nobody is paying attention to - blow up next year. And then foreign guys get added in.

So when the next draft rolls around, we find ourselves again thinking that this year is strong and next year looks weak.

Could TB leave and be drafted? Yes.
Will he go in the lottery? No.
Would some team take a flyer and pick him up late 1st round? Maybe.
So that's his status. Not anything there that says it's a good idea to go. So... let's look at the other angle:
Will he hurt himself by returning to UNC (like JMac)? Absolutely not.
Will he become a star and improve his draft stock into lottery by returning? Almost assuredly.

Thus my point. The disturbing talk coming from Tony's camp has little to do with numbers or logic. It unfortunately has everything to do with a few unscrupulus people who have been filling his dad's head --- and by osmosis Tony's --- with nonsense, and it's been going on for a few months now. My fear at this point is that if any random NBA rep gives them a maybe on that late-1st-round thing then we may lose him... and that would be a shame for all involved, except of course for the aforementioned unscrupulous people.
I agree that Tony is more likely to benefit from another year by having a solid rise in the draft. That's what I hope keeps him here. But we often see kids drafted higher than they seem to deserve based on ceiling. I think the main thing keeping Tony from being drafted high this year is that he was a late bloomer in HS and has played backup in college. In other words, he didn't start out high in the mocks, and although he had a good season, it wasn't "loud" enough to cause people to push his stock up a lot.

My point was that if you look at Tony's numbers, he's even better than you may have thought. I figure some NBA guys will evaluate him higher than he is showing in the mocks. So whereas if he's likely to be picked #28, I think he should return - because he should be able to improve on that a good bit - if someone will take him at #22, that could tip the calculation in favor of leaving.

I haven't run the calculations, but if coming back only improves your draft status by 4 or 5 rungs, it probably takes a long time to catch up.

Sort of the opposite of McAdoo's trajectory - where he started very high and even though he had a worse freshman year than Tony, he didn't slide much in the polls.

I think that would be a big mistake by Tony and would be a huge blow to next year's team.

While I certainly agree that it would be a huge blow to our team next year, I'm not sure it would be a big mistake for Tony.

Imagine he would get picked #28 this year and #22 next year. Two main things to consider. First is the money he would get his first year. The second is who he plays for.

Ordinarily the lower you are picked, the better the team that you play for. For some players that means they will have a hard time getting on the court, but for a guy like Tony, that could mean there's less pressure to perform right away. So that could be a good thing. Instead of bulking up and learning for a scholarship, he gets to bulk up and learn while earning $924,800.

So what about the money. Let's see how that plays out if he goes at #28 now vs #22 next year, based on cumulative earnings:

Year 1: $924,800 vs $0 -> $924,800 difference
Year 2: $1,891,200 vs $1,120,100 -> $771,100 difference
Year 3: $2,899,200 vs $2,290,600 -> $608,600 difference
Year 4 (option): $4,718,640 vs $4,298,980 -> $419,660 difference

Clearly, the version of Tony who leaves early is ahead. But also clear is that the version who waits is catching up.

Now if you think Tony will jump into the lottery, that changes the equation a lot. If he's drafted #14 next year, vs #28 this year, he will be $429,300 ahead after 3 years.

Thanks for the calculations WWJD.
inhave to ask, what about the second contract? And the one after that?
The pressure is on to produce during that first 3/4 years to maximise earnings, but what if a player isn't able to do that (not ready, still developing)
The flip side is, going early means getting that second big payday sooner.

Makes my head hurt really. They all get payed waaaaay too much!

I'm sure this doesn't matter to Tony at all, but if he leaves early, I will care about him less. He's a good player and I like him. But he hasn't imprinted very much. I liked Brandon Wright and Marvin Williams, too, but I don't really care much about them because they were only here a year.

If he stays and does well as a starter, that changes things.

Why should anyone care? Because I'm probably not alone. And guys like Marvin and Brandon don't get me to turn on NBA games when their team is playing. Guys who stuck around make me more likely to watch them in the NBA.

I wonder about Kentucky fans with all their OADs. Do they make an effort to watch a game because, say, Julius Randle is on the team? Maybe there are a couple of OADs that generate a following - guys who really stood out during their stopover at UK - but who cares about Julius Randle, or MGK?

Good point about later contracts, but I have no way to get a handle on that.

Needless to say I also agree about the pay. The idea that some kid playing a game earns more than the President of the US boggles the mind. I mean I appreciate that's how the market works, but still....

Marvin came back to get his degree, that takes dedication after only attending school for one year. It took him 10 years, a decade of summers after leaving and even with the NBA and millions of dollars he came back and did it. Marvin was also the X factor for our title run and had that put back and 1 against Duke. Marvin has a special spot in my heart, before the mass exodus one and done era.

Oh, sure. Those things matter. I like that they do those things. And if I happen to be watching a playoff game where one of these guys is playing, I want them to do well. But it's not the same as with Henson or Zeller. Even though they aren't or aren't likely to be good NBA players, I'd rather watch Hansbrough, or Kendall or Kennedy play. Guys like that earned a spot in my heart.

If every AAU coach agrees with you then why was he not starting at PG on his AAU team?
I explained that. They were letting Leaky play PG until it counted.. Jalek was their best player by a mile and also their best shooter
(along with the left-handed kid). Leaky's outside shooting is (kindly) a bit suspect. Again, when it got to crunch time, Jalek take over PG and pretty much run everything, like when they came back from like 20 to win the UA championship game.

To play Devil Advocate....coming back to school doesn't always help you get drafted higher. Ivan Rabb from Cal would've been a top 10 pick last year. He might not go in the lotto this year. I can named other examples like Josh McRoberts etc.

While I do believe TB can get drafted higher if he come back, people keep saying it like it is gospel. That's not always the case.

I think another year at UNC elevates Tony to lottery pick status. Look, if he goes, he goes. I watch exactly no NBA anymore. Not going to sweat it. I'll wish him the best regardless because he attended UNC, just as I wish any UNC student the best.

Huh? Leaky only played with Team Felton like twice. Jalek switched on and off the point in the 5-6 times I saw Team Felton.

I start watching here and there during playoff time. If there are UNC guys playing, I am more likely to watch. If there are UNC players I really like, I make a point of watching - especially if they play meaningful minutes.

I don't understand why teams don't hire more guys from the same college teams or at least same conference. Or do they? Give me a team with several UNC guys on it and I will watch a lot more NBA games. And if I watch more games when "my" guys play, eventually I will start to like a few other players and teams. Because that's how it works.

I wish more posters will admit they don't watch the NBA anymore, and not talk like they know the NBA game TODAY so much

Also wish more posters felt the latter as well.

Well an individual NBA team doesnt get any more money if you watch their game on TNT or ESPN. Those are national leaguewide contracts, and every team shares the revenue. So the team wouldn't care because they get nothing extra for it.

Assuming this effect mattered, it would only mean anything for regional games. So they'd have to get players from local colleges. I doubt there is a huge effect though, not enough to override the fact you want the best players generally. You couldn't have a very good NBA team if it was full of UNC players right now, and we're the best team in college basketball.

This^^^.

Truth is, Arch, it's a tribute to Jalek's skillset that he's well thought of in both backcourt positions. Basically, everybody knows he can play Point --- he's had one of the great private PG tutors for Pete's sake --- but being his AAU team's most explosive scorer he spent a lot of time off the ball as well. But if things weren't going well, they would just give Jalek the ball and let him run the show and things generally got better.

I'll take it a step further: IMO Jalek is the best PG in this class, and that includes Duval, but since AAU is where these kids tend to get "rated", he got lumped in with prototype 2s. Had he devoted to full-time PG last summer there wouldn't have even been a shadow of a doubt of him being a Burger Boy and you could've moved that "ranking" another 10-15 spots up the list.

What is lost that saying every AAU coach I know could mean 20, 1, 0 whatever.

Thus, making that statement means absolutely nothing.

Like, I could say every NBA coach I know agrees with me that seventh woods should be our starting PG next year. And it means literallt jack shit.

If you wish to tout connections to bolster an argument, make it tangible and not air. That is my viewpoint. I would be much more interested in your comment, gary, if you said "hey, at least 3 AAU coaches have told me Jalek is a top PG and should have been PG all year". That relates more and gives a good barometer of exactly what you are saying. And, it gives me a better idea of what I should expect out of your comment.

Just a thought.
