What you listening to today?

RIP to Christine McVie
Damn. Give me Christine over Stevie Nicks any day, I always liked her better as part of Fleetwood Mac. Stevie should have been a solo act. I was ushering at the Dean Dome back when they had concerts there and I was working in front of the stage when FM played. Nicks is easy to look at but Christine McVie stole that show. She was wonderful.

Count me also shocked at the ages although I shouldn't be. They've always been older than me.

I don't know why, our BB game today made me think of this

and I always like to appreciate good covers, or different versions by the original artist, of my favorite songs. Hard to beat Joe Cocker covering anything, although the original can't really be beat.

And speaking of originals that can't be beat....I miss this guy, even if he was a dookie....

where did the really good music go? I caught him opening for ZZ Top in G'boro many years ago, and I wanted to forget abot ZZ Top (who I was a great fan of) and hear him play for the rest of the night.

these guys, Sonia Dada, opened for the Doobies at Walnut Creek long ago. They blew me away with their tight, kind of eccentric sounds. Here's maybe my favorite tune of theirs. It reminds me of how much hell I went through getting off the horse.

Just kidding, I was never on horse or anything like that. Just give me a shot of meth and a Thai stick laced with fentanyl and that's good enough for me..

now I feel like doing some 'shine. Who's with me?

Then I'm gonna want me some some....

as long as we're doing local...

Of all the concerts I've been to, I had the best seats to see BFF. Front row with Ben Folds himself playing directly in front of us. Good stuff.

Just discovered this group. Definitely different but I like their sound. Doesnt hurt the lead singer is hot! Its like Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie had a love child and her name is Raven Black.

Your description of someone being hot is that they are the love child of two dudes?

You know how I know you're gay?

Also, how can you even tell that she's hot with all that clown makeup? I'd bet without it she's a very average looking chick.

Also x2, I try to have an open mind with music as everyone has different tastes...but I never saw the appeal of this kind of music. I need melody of some sort.

But hey, everyone has their own taste in chicks that are the love child of two dudes and music...rock on man.

Late to this but yeah this one hit a bit. Most casual FM fans tend to overlook her contribution to the band, I think she had more hit singles than Stevie and Lindsey (combined?). Over My Head, Don't Stop, Songbird, Everywhere, Little Lies, You Make Loving Fun...all classics.

Crazy that she was 6-7 years older than Lindsey/Stevie, which means she was 34 when recording Rumors (as they were 28). I can't imagine being mid 30s and living the insanity that was late 70s FM...pretty sure I wouldn't have made it to 79 like she did.

Homophobe, you are.

A great song that gets plugged into a darn automobile commercial.

I always liked Delta. I never was a big fan of CSN (&Y) but it's not like I don't like them. They're just kind of there. They come on my Yacht Rock channel on Pandora often. I usually don't skip.

I never got into the hippie vibe but I enjoyed some of the trappings, IYKWIM, including the music. Music has never been better.

I just read that the day before he died he taunted God, saying heaven was overrated and 'cloudy'. Moral of the story; disrespect the Lord maybe but don't ever taunt him.

No Jacket Required is one of the greatest Side Two's in music history in my opinion (Abbey Road, Cosmo's Factory, Let it Bleed to name a few more). Just banger after banger.

@dadika cool you posted this! I was thinking about Phil Collins yesterday (genesis including Peter Gabriel in point I’ll make further below).

I heard Glenn Frey’s Smuggler’s Blues on Sirius xm 80s on 8. It is a great (IMO) song from the 80s and an all time great video. It brought back such great memories from my high school and college days 81-89. The music, the Miami Vice vibe, great videos, etc - and all the outstanding music put out by solo guys from The Eagles

(I LOVED the 80s, and 90s - my teens and 20 something years). I wish my kids could have grown up then. I feel like so much has changed for the worse now - music, culture, social media, pressures etc - now vs then)

Mostly Don Henley who had masterful great diverse solo albums, but also Glenn Frey with some excellent cultural, movie / show related songs - and Joe Walsh while he had limited personal solo release success he wrote a ton of songs after Eagles for other big name successes.

Made me think: (and I hope people will discuss here) who is the greatest rock/ pop band of all time in terms of group success AND later solo success of group members.

I think tops still is Beatles when you think of McCartney / Wings and Lennon solo success even without Harrison or Ringo.

Next couple bands after them on my list would be Eagles - Frey, Henley, Walsh
Genesis - Collins, Gabriel (am I missing members?)

I guess you could say Fleetwood Mac - Stevie nicks lots of solo success.

Led Zeppelin? Robert plant had a lot of solo success, but did Jimmy Paige have much success as a solo act?

What other groups and later solo acts would be on your list?

(Eric Clapton played with other greats like Steve winwood, Jeff Beck in groups Cream and Yardbirds, but a lot of bouncing around of musicians and occasional collaborations.

Another good example of that is Traveling Wilburies - which was a brief formation after solo careers of 4 all time greats -Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison. Still - quite fun music, all those greats singing together

Man this convo is right up my alley, love it.

I think The Beatles are the easy and obvious answer, but it's also the correct answer. McCartney alone would probably eclipse any other band then when you add in Lennon's (overrated) solo career and George's, it's easily them. I've got my own thoughts on Lennon as a solo artist but I'll save that for another time.

Eagles have Henley who was successful (no number 1 albums though), Frey who was moderately successful (Smuggler's Blues is awesome, I agree), and Walsh who had his moments.

Genesis have two monster solo careers as you said. I'd probably put them right behind The Beatles.

Fleetwood Mac had Stevie who was huge, but man Lindsey's solo career is so disappointing. I love his songs on FM albums but hate his solo stuff. It's literally like fire and ice to me in comparison.

I think we have to disqualify the Wilburies because these guys were already successful stars. I think the discussion should be limited to band then solo artist. Does that eliminate CSNY?

One wrinkle, do we open this up to other music genres. Because if so, NWA has to be in the conversation. Dr. Dre is maybe the most successful artist in Hip-Hop history and Ice Cube had a great solo career. Wu-Tang also has to be in that conversation.

Also, one thing I'll throw out, if Kurt Cobain doesn't kill himself I think Nirvana would have broken up pretty soon after In Utero. Grohl has basically said so. So Cobain and Grohl would have been two huge careers.

Man, I feel like we're missing an obvious one that we're not thinking of. I'm sure someone here will come in and help.

Yes - Nirvana is a great add- and I was thinking of CSNY earlier this week as a good contender- with passing of Crosby.

I say it all the time to my kids. If I could replicate my growing up experience for them, I absolutely would. Life in general was pretty damn good for most in the 80s and 90s, certainly for me. I had a wonderful childhood and I attribute a lot of it to the social/political environment we grew up in but also the American culture of that era. Those days are long gone and I know despite the inevitable successes of my kids throughout their teens, 20s and 30s, their lives won't be as great as mine. Makes me sad.

I'll leave it up to the judges to decide if this qualifies, but the duo of Simon and Garfunkel were great together and then Paul Simon went on to an even greater solo career. Not so much with Garfunkel, but he did produce a couple of decent albums with songs such as "All I Know" and "What a Wonderful World" that did include Simon along with James Taylor participating.

Another offshoot could be great families of musicians - who also then had lots of solo success (across genres):

Jackson family- Jackson 5, then Michael, and Janet, (Latoya?)

Bee Gees (brothers Gibb) plus Andy Gibb who iirc wasn’t in Bee Gees

Carter family plus June Carter Cash and Johnny

Neville Brothers - whole Neville family very talented.

Hank Williams - senior and junior.

Sisters Crystal Gayle and Loretta Lynn

Whole Marley family for raggae, Marsalis family for jazz.

I don’t know enough about deep r&b, rap, hip hop to think of groups there

Niggas Wit Attitudes!

Highly successful as a group - Straight Outta Compton may be the most influential rap album of all time. Then 4 members had incredibly successful solo careers - Dre, Cube, Eazy and to a lesser extent, Ren. You could even count The D.O.C. as another NWA member and he achieved much success as a solo artist before his accident.

@dadika I’m right with what you typed and added above, including/ especially the Genesis / Phil Collins solo stuff. Phil Collins solo stuff is some of my favorite - almost all great songs. I forgot Mike Rutherford of Mike and the Mechanics as a legit artist from Genesis too.

I get that Henley never had a #1 solo album but if you consider Building the Perfect Beast and to a little lesser extent End of the Innocence - I don’t know how these were not #1 at some point. Maybe has to do with song release timing? Both are immensely enjoyable beginning to end, each with 60-80% releasable single songs IMO.

I’d put these two albums (especially BTPB) in top 50 albums I’ve personally listened to, BTPB maybe in top 20. But I get that doesn’t have to align with commercial success necessarily
