RJ.......Gladiator!!

This young man is truly a tough nut. He has worked and worked into a more than solid pg. Tough as nails and when we need a hoop..he gets it.
Last night was just the latest example of his battle tested mentality. He continually gets bashed on the court..gets knocked around and gets right back up into the fray. I want him at the end shooting those must have fts...he's as dependable a pg as you can get.Hope his latest injury heals quickly.I think some take him For granted....not me. I am really happy this Gladiator is a Heel!!!

Steve Forbes....

I think he is a good coach but.......He is the #1 coach in NCAA basketball that looks like he SHOULD NOT be a basketball coach! Dude looks like a retired detective who has eaten way to many doughnuts in his life! Mick Cronin is #2 in my book....he should be on one of them dumb Youtube video deals...maybe it is the bald heads....no offense against those that are hair challenged!

Billy Packer succumbs tonight—-A legendary broadcaster with the ACC and National games

Billy Packer was behind the Mike for a ton of ACC games with Jim Thacker and then shared the Mike with Dick Enberg and Al McGuire on big time National Basketball 🏀 games.

He was a solid guard for Wake Forest in his playing days and he was very knowledgeable of the game and that was so apparent every Saturday when he did one of the many “Sail with the Pilot” broadcasts.

He was not much of a Carolina fan but he will still be remembered for what he brought to the basketball 🏀 world for so long. Rest in Peace big man…

Tierra toomay

On our women's side of basketball which I love I don't see Tierra ranked 4th currently by ESPN and a 5 star player on the 2023 roster either ,no way she should be left off, so what am I missing ? It means a lot to all players to make these Rosters, and maybe it's my eye sight but I don't she her listed.

Team Records: UNC 15-6, 7-3 ACC, Syracuse 13-8, 6-4

• Carolina has won four in a row and 10 of its last 12 games.
• The Tar Heels are 2-4 on the road this season (not including the neutral-site win over Portland at the Moda Center in Portland, Ore.). Carolina has won two straight on the road (Louisville and Syracuse).
• Carolina held the Orange to 68 points, the sixth straight game the Tar Heel defense has held the opponents under 70 points.
• Carolina had 14 assists on 16 first-half field goals and finished with 20 assists on 26 baskets for a season-best percentage of .769 (previous was 75.0% on 24 assists/32 FG vs. The Citadel).
• It was the third time this season UNC had 20 or more assists (also 24 vs. The Citadel and 20 vs. Ohio State). The Tar Heels had a combined 13 assists in the previous two games vs. Boston College and NC State.

• Pete Nance scored a game-high 21 points. It was his second 20-point game as a Tar Heel (10th career) and the fourth time he led UNC in scoring (first time since 12/4 at Virginia Tech).
• Nance also matched his season best with three assists and had a career-high four steals (which doubled his previous career best for steals, which he had done six times).
• Caleb Love scored 15 points and passed Ademola Okulaja, Raymond Felton, Ed Cota and Bobby Jones to move into 53rd in UNC history with 1,266 points (one behind Vince Carter).

• Carolina scored 21 points off Syracuse turnovers, seven more than the Orange. The Tar Heels improved to 8-1 when they have more points off turnovers (are 5-5 when they have fewer).

• The Tar Heels led for 36:42 and trailed for only 1:40, including for 1:04 at 68-66 before Pete Nance made one FT and then scored the game-winner with 19 seconds to play after a missed FT and steal.
• Freshman Tyler Nickel led all players on both teams in plus/minus at +12 in just under a dozen minutes.
• Carolina won despite converting 60.9% from the free throw line (14 of 23).
• The Tar Heels scored a season-low two second-chance points (an offensive rebound and basket in the second half by RJ Davis). The game-winning basket by Nance, which came after a missed free throw, was officially recorded as following a Syracuse defensive rebound and turnover.

Series vs. Syracuse
• Carolina is 16-6 all-time vs. the Orange.
• The Tar Heels have won 12 of 15 since Syracuse joined the ACC.
• Carolina is 12-3 all-time in the JMA Dome (formerly the Carrier Dome), including 5-2 against Syracuse.

Next Game: Wednesday, February 1 vs. Pittsburgh, 7 p.m. (ACC Network)

Records and Asterisks?

Not trying to start a war by any means but I think the questions warrants discussion.

How is everyone with asterisks for breaking resords playing 5 years, versus a player who only played 3, or even 4 seasons. Whichever was allowed by the NCAA at the time their records were set?

All time Double Doubles as an example of a 3 vrs 5 Cunningham/Bacot
All time Rebounds as an example of a 4 vrs 5 Hansbrough/Bacot?

Bacot is one of my all time favorite Heels, and he most certainly deserves the records he has set, yet he did it with 1 and 2 extra years.
Thoughts?

Quick stuff (Cuse game)...

...and my head STILL hurts from watching that.

Look, I said going in that this is a much-improved Cuse team --- offensively, that is, but that Zone was there for the taking, at least when we had the gumption to do so.

OK.. stuff:

- I didn't like the Leaky on Girard matchup from the get-go because of the size differential and Girard's knack for getting lost amongst their phalanx of (mostly illegal) screens. In fairness to Leaky, his own teammates were letting THEMSELVES being used as screens. We did at least adjust that part in the second half, with our off-ball guys finally opening up to the angle.

- Speaking of illegal screens, IIRC they called exactly ONE -- which would put it at about 5%.

- Shoulda known we'd have a clunky FT night after the way we shot em Saturday  .

- For you coaches out there, repeat after me: Yes, you CAN and SHOULD run on a Zone team, and Hubert was exhorting our guys to do just that, and when we did, it was successful. Unfortunately, if ya wanna run, ya hafta REBOUND, as we got our asses handed to us on the glass.

- Speaking of that, we were too often getting outscrapped for 50/50 balls, and as far as the "physical" stuff went, we sure as hell weren't getting any help from the striped shirts. On nights like this, you just hafta OWN the rebound, and on offense, take em thru the damn rim and FINISH!

- Speaking of that ---and I don't wanna single a guy out who led the scoring, but Pete --- c'mon man, you have the skills, but you just can't be that soft. At just over 3 minutes left, Pete FINALLY exploded off the lane flash entry for an easy layup. THAT WAS THERE ALL NIGHT. Hell, they weren't even guarding the "flash" guy!!! There was no need for fall-aways --- just take it to the rack or lean in for an easy tear-drop. You coulda easily had 30... and only 4 boards in 40 minutes?

- OK, sorry, but with our Zone-Offense we shouldn't have trailed in that game for even a second, especially with Caleb staking us to an early lead, and constant shot ops available.

- As for other positives, RJ is one tough little nut, one guy who will never get outscrapped. Mando had to fight thru an absolute pounding on offense, and yet more phantom calls against him on the other end. And I REALLY liked what Nickel brought to the table --- another guy who wouldn't let himself be outscrapped, along with some excellent passing in Zone-O.

Anyway, sorry for the frustration, and a win up there is never anythng to sneeze at, but we're SO close to putting things together more consistently, if we can just get out of our own way more often. Just gotta keep on pushin' to get where we can be. Let's hope the extra practice days are put to good use, because we owe the Capels an ass-whuppin' next week...

Discussion
Any win away is nice to have, but in a match against the #99 (NET) team, the game essentially came down to a Pete Nance FT put back and an RJ Davis drawn charge. It shouldn't be like this because Syracuse just isn't a tournament team.

The Heels' shooting was a pedestrian 48/38/52%, and they earned 4 more possessions than did Syracuse. Both teams scored 0.91 points per possession. Syracuse shot 51% from the field, so where was the real difference? Turnovers. UNC coughed it up on 13% of their possessions to Syracuse's 23%. In the end the Heels were just short of their offensive goal, and fairly far off of their defensive goal.

A few other noteworthy stats: UNC only rebounded 20% of their missed shots, but had 0.71 assists per field goal. This was another slow game, with only 154 possessions. Syracuse's 51% shooting has been eclipsed by only 81 of their last 979 opponents.

Despite poor 3-point shooting this season, this team is getting fairly close to its offensive goals each game. The problem with this team is on the defensive end. Over the last 28 seasons opponents have shot 41.5% from the field, but this team's opponents are shooting 43.7%. That's the 4th worst defensive performance for UNC. Others were 2002 (45.2%), 2003 (43.7%), and 2004 (44.5%). Each of UNC's last 6 teams have allowed opponents to average above the 28-year average of 41.5%. The defensive culture of the program has progressively crumbled since the back-to-back championship games.

Every season the fans decide to lay blame on just one player when the team goes thru a rough time. Why?

What do these names all have in common: Brooks, Platek, McDonald, Britt, Meeks, Love, Maye, Williams, Black, B Johnson, Yes u r right these are players who proudly wore the North Carolina jerseys recently but who were unfairly criticized for not living up to critics expectations who in their own right could not even carry their jocks…

The players owe not me or you anything but many feel the players do which is such a childish and selfish thing to think.

All fans want the young men representing UNC to give their all on and off the court as they grow as a team and if the team players on scholarship and the walk ons don’t perform like a Phil Ford, Michael Jordan, James Worthy or Tyler Hansbrough game in and game out that is no reason to make it a personal vendetta to single them out.

I cannot speak for anybody else but I would have loved to have been on any Carolina team in my younger days and be part of the family and u probably would have too…
