2020 recruiting thread

Todd could have flourished at UNC. Oh well.

Nice to see we may pick up another player, if things go well at 9a.m. This one is important to that maintaining the core. That group of 3 year or more players.

Very even keel answers for Puff. He is diplomatic and thoughtful. Hopefully, he will choose the good guys but you can tell he will be fine where ever he goes.

Join the Family, Mr. Johnson!

After all , we are already Family!

He lit up like a dang Christmas tree at the very end when talking about Arizona.

Stopped watching when they referenced Gtown because I figured they weren't real contenders. Everything before that was dead even!

I’m going to stop thinking about this class, as I believe it’s a wrap.

A good way of looking at it arch’ anyone else is a bonus.... though I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s 2 available schollys by the end of the season.
I would be pretty shocked if we don't add a wing (not an insider of course, just reading tea leaves). I think we'll see a couple more offers if we don't land any of the current recruits we're pursuing, and either way I sort of expect we'll pursue a top grad transfer again too. No good reason not to try to add talent from wherever you can get it.

I am fine if we close out this class as already is, any of our remaining targets are IMO wants much more than need. Our single need area is, worst case a back up for Leaky at the wing (3), best case a wing that could start and allow Leaky to "swiss army knife" all over the court.

But as a back up to Leaky at the 3, I think we could go 3 guard small (think Love/Jeremiah, Ant/Platek, Davis) or maybe triple tower big (Kessler or even Walker Miller for big men that can hit jumpers). Add in Brooks and Sharpe/Bacot and you have amazing length in that front court and the 3 spot would once again become more of a stretch 4 position than a wing/guard. My point being there are some really interesting combinations ALREADY with us for our "mad scientist" Roy to tinker with NEXT early season

Fortunately, in today's game, I would suggest the wing (3) spot may be the most easy spot to cover (with existing depth) if not right there with the 2 guard spot.

That's not the worst case. The worst case is neither Harris nor Davis is ready to start at the 2, so we need another wing player to start alongside Leaky. I think this is a somewhat fair outlook at this point too.

Regarding the "want vs need" framing, I think it's more gray than that. We will use 7-8 guys for 20 minutes per game, so even if one of Harris/Davis is really good by next year (which should not be taken as a given; highly rated recruits like Felton, Seventh, and Brob were not ready to start as underclassmen), adding a third high-level wing will be impactful towards putting together a great team. It's clear Roy really wants to add one, and his basketball sense is pretty good I hear.

It's almost like one is an honest person who's straightforward in dealing with recruits, while the other is a huckster who tells people what they want to hear.
I have zero issue with how these kids choose. I love UNC, so I would be an easy sell. I totally get how kids see Kentucky and other top notch places as good landing spots as well.

It’s why I haven’t sweated recruiting for many years now. To spend time worrying about the decision making process of 18 year olds is an exercise in futility. Que sera, sera.

Read a review on Day’Ron Sharpe... declaring him a sure-fire OAD.
Combine that with Steat’s belief that Bacot is determined to be OAD and there’s room for a project-style 4* big to join the 2020 class.... a lot of size will be gone in the next couple of years.

Watching that vid makes me even more concerned for the following year.
IF Mando goes OAD, and IF Sharpe and Kessler are as good as advertised, Roy could be losing all his starting and back-up front court players in the next two seasons.
Signing 5* players each year won't provide the needed depth... that's why I think he needs to go after a 4* big for 2020 to at least shore up some long term stability in the post.

Let's not wait on Ziaire, put the pressure on and go all in on Jaylen Clark, #2 kid at e same position.
Clark was thinking New Mexico but has pulled tat back and re-opened recruitment.
Lots to like with Clark in all aspects of his game so stay west Ziaire.
And lets please get off the grad transfer train and load up o core types, 3* and 4* kids.

Tom79 - Lots of respect for you and your posts. I only disagree with you on the 3* kids. 3* recruiting (in 2017) is what got us to where we are right now. Take Williams if he wants to come (all signs seems to point to he doesn't) and balance the 1/done with 4* kids (we are still CAROLINA!).

I'm with you on not rolling the dice on grad transfers each year.

Did anyone else think Kessler looked like he was playing against over matched Junior high school kids in that highlight video?

Yep, we better focus on the 4* as you mentioned.
I have watch Kessler in a number of videos and I sure thought the same NorCalTarheel, talented player with the skill set, wait until he enrolls early and gets a load of our alums, then hits the court...between him, Day'Ron, Brooks (we hope will stay) and Puff, with Leaky we can manage several positions.
Day'Ron has a buzz going as several sportwriters have really been wowed with him. One said he had a little mean streak and any ball near him is his. He is tearing it up.

Pretty sure the grad transfer "roll of the dice" was purely out of necessity, not desire or part of a new Roy philosophy. Worked out great with Cam and not so much yet this year.
