2020 recruiting thread

I think he'll be a great player but nothing there tells me he's a center. If Roy puts him in the post more often than not, he will struggle against older guys. I love him as a stretch 4.
Oh, I agree. Sharpe is more of a center at 6-9 than Kessler is at 7-0. As I think most of us believe, Kessler is indeed a stretch four. His ability to score from anywhere will be hugely advantageous to us.

Bacot/Sharpe at the five, Brooks/Kessler at the four. That’s a potent front court.

I meant that he's not a banger or a guy that has played against ACC bigs. Kessler is a tough kid that wants to move around the perimeter and shoot. Perhaps if he stays longer than one year, he could develop into that, but he's a shooter not a guy you plant in the paint like Bacot.

No, he isn't what I would call a banger, that is much more Sharpe's role but the kid isn't one of those that tend to shy away either. TZ is the best comparison in my mind. I think it is going to be really interesting to see who emerges with the more PT next season between Bacot, Sharpe, and Kessler. Right now I would suggest Bacot but more because I am looking for a big time leap from Bacot as a soph, if that leap is less than I expect, then either Sharpe or Kessler can pass him in minutes. I don't there is any question Brooks is a starter and will have starter minutes.

To tangent off a bit, Brooks, this season had to back off a little bit on the defensive end, we could not afford him getting in to foul trouble. Like to see him able to play a bit harder nosed defense next season because he has solid back up.

anyone heard any rumblings of us losing 1 or 2 players from this yrs team to transferring ??

Yeah, I have heard rumblings about 3 guys since mid Jan or so, nothing concrete, more like strongly looking at it. This virus stuff may have slowed some of that down but yeah, there was some strong consideration going on in mid Jan. Simply put, kids want to play. For example, if you are the #5 or 6 big man in our rotation, you just are not going to play much, especially if you did not play much even in this past season. Another example could be our back court, when you have Love, RJ, Ant and Jeremiah (what I see as our 2 deep in the back court) and we have been in constant contact with Walton, now expressing some interest in a transfer that is a back court guy, maybe those not on my 2 deep already may be looking to transfer to a smaller program closer to home?

Roy is and has been kinda shopping a scholly that many assumed was Bacot's yet I have been trying to tell folks, Bacot was not going any where. Well then it had to be Manley right, well no because Manley is a wait and see deal, maybe the surgery will allow him to play maybe it won't. Manley will get a red shirt for this past season, even if he can not play next season if the doctor's end up feeling he will recover but needs the time to recoup and rehab, next season could be the perfect one for him to sit out. I think he would have a great case with the NCAA for a waiver (which has been done several times) for a 6th year.

Now the 2 things I shared early in this that kind of clogs things up are the health of both Manley and Ant, when or if they will be ready, next season or ever. If it takes Ant till jan or so before the doctors release him for practice Roy will very slowly ease him in, double caution considering how he was injured so quickly after coming back this past season. Major surgery on both knees now that is a hard road to come back from. That would effect a guard's decision on a potential transfer if he gets in our 2 deep because Ant can not be. .

I have heard 3 names, no need to share them but again, nothing in stone.

I agree, if Huff were to transfer, UNCG would be a good landing spot for him. Remind me again who the coach at UNCG is, doesn't he have a brother? Another great spot for Huff, again, if he were to transfer would be NC Central, their coach is really good people and is very close to our own program.

If Huff does opt to leave, I selfishly want UNC-G to snag him. He might thrive there, a big fish in a smaller pond. He’s only got one year of eligibility left IIRC, and would have to sit a year.

If not, NCA&T or NCCU would be nice.

If any of our guys wants more PT, I understand. They should do what they believe is in their best interest.

Assuming the NCAA passes the one time transfer rule like most believe they will, Huff or any of the others looking for more playing time can transfer this summer and play immediately this fall.

Roy Williams was quoted as saying just the other day that our class is great. If he had another scholarship he could probably make it greater but he doesn't have one. And that it is okay.

"To answer your question, yes, I do like the class. I wish we had one more scholarship because I think we could’ve made it much, much better if we had one more scholarship, but we didn’t. I do like the class but we will have to see. Everybody has to become better shooters because I have never had a team shoot the ball as poorly as this year’s team and I don’t want to go through that anymore."

Poor public relations. You should always say that you love the class, and you should never say that you wish you could add one more. Five prospects in one class is plenty

I have always liked 3 man freshman classes, we kinda had no choice but to bring in a larger class this time because we had/have so many holes that need filling. But those 3 classes means fewer are coming in together so fewer leave at the same time. The 1&D deal skews this now days, if you bring in a 5 star kid then you kind of have to bring in a less likely 1&D kid you can groom as a replacement for the 1&D when he leaves. So it kinda forces you to bring in larger classes and means at times you will get that season where your talent is at a lower water mark as well as experience, kills you if your freshmen do not play up to the hype.

Bacot was a 5 star that didn't really play like a 5 star last season IMO, kills you when you really don't have a big coming off the bench with size an ability. I think Roy bet manley could be that 3rd big man but injury ya know...

So, my little interesting tid bit! Hadn’t been on in a while bc... well, I just didn’t wanna see the slander on the board this szn. That being said, my cuz recently committed to UNCC. He played against Cannon this year and has been in touch w Jaden Bagley. Our whole fam are huge Heel fans. He texted Jaden the day he got the UNC offer and from what he told me, Jaden sounded pretty upbeat ab it. Even going as far to say “Might just have to” in response to whether or not he would come on board. I’ll try to play that connection out a little bit this offseason and keep y’all posted! Go Heels

Jaden Bradley, correct?

I talked to my guy about Williams and he said its "very quiet." He would be a take if he wants to come though. I don't know if anyone knows anything about Williams really. I did hear his family wants him to stay out west, but its his decision and he has made that clear. Has anyone else heard anything about Williams?

Roy has sold Walton and his father that he needs Walton's shooting. The team made that very clear as well this year. Roy said he would have a great chance to play early with his ability as a pure shooter. I know they aren't going to wait on Williams decision after a scholarship opens up and Walton feels as if he is a need because of his ability to shoot.

And Roy isn't lying here. There is definitely a major role for Walton next season off of our bench.

Walton could be a very important piece to next year’s team but a scholarship would need to open up soon because the kid will not wait around forever.

Kerwin Walton. Kenny Williams.

Both initials KW.
Both SGs
Both ranked at the exact same spot.
Both committing fairly late.
Both marketed as Shooting Specialist.
If he is like Kenny then I would love to have him on board. I like what Kenny Williams brought to the team. Seems to be a nice guy as well.

So Wertz is down to 7, with UNC as 1 of his possible destinations. Walton down to 3, including UNC? Seems strange with our scholarship situation.

I don’t get the styles to state thing, I can’t think of the last player to commit to them over the Heels (excluding DSJ)

Evidently someone in recruiting seems to think we have room (or fixin to) in order to take another recruit! Interesting none the less.

Wertz isn’t available for 2021... he’s a regular transfer who’ll have to sit out a year then he’ll have 2 yrs of eligibility.
He'd still be on scholarship for 2020 if he came while he sat out his transfer year.

If Wertz were to commit and have to sit out next year, does he still count against the scholarship count for next year? I think he would.

If not it would be great to have both. I think we really need Walton as a shooter next year.

While I wouldn't mind having Walton, I wouldn't expect much out of him for a year or 2. Unless maybe he's one of those rare outside bombers who can still shoot at the next level in his first year.

He has a nice looking shot, so maybe he will be an exception. OTOH, he looks a little soft on other parts of his game in the clips.
