2020 recruiting thread

Just don’t see him coming to UNC when we have Pierce and black. He would get immediate playing time at Kansas.

Certainly would seem like more of a no-brainer 4 weeks ago.

Still, he would be a contributor off the bench for a top 10 team next season and a likely starter the next season, as Carolina is for sure losing Anthony, Robinson, Keeling and Pierce on the perimeter.

I maintain that if he makes the trip to CH - especially with mom, as reported - then he (they) will fall in love with the school and culture of the campus.

That's assuming we don't get Puff and Ziaire. Corey Evans of Rivals is projecting Ziaire to UNC. I would love to have him, but I don't see much playing time for him this year and it would up for debate if he would start next year.

A five-star forward out of California, North Carolina and Stanford have been the presumed favorites for months now. The Cardinal have the academic prestige and the close proximity to sell, but UNC boasts the national acclaim and blue blood pedigree. Arizona, Oregon, UCLA, USC and Virginia are also involved but I believe he ends up in Chapel Hill.

On the other hand, Brown will more than likely cut his list after his travel season completes and then make his college commitment later in the fall or early winter. UNC is also heavily in the mix but if all goes right in Austin over the next few months, Texas would have to be my pick for where he lands. Keep an eye on Auburn, Baylor and Memphis, too, but Shaka Smart’s
relationship with him and his family and Brown’s close proximity to campus might be too difficult to overcome.

As to Puff:
Why he could rise: When you can shoot it from deep like "Puff" can, you are going to attract a crowd. It doesn't seem like he's missed a jump shot in the past few months and he's got some crafty offensive game to go along with hit. His older brother
Cameron Johnson
was a late bloomer who developed into a legitimate NBA prospect at UNC and little bro is way ahead at this point in his development.

Well, for the three guard/wing spots Leaky is the only guy really locked in for 2020-2021 right?

We hope Francis or Harris can step up as sophomores into a starting role, but not 100% sure. If Zaire came he probably takes one starting spot, but probably not Puff as a freshman right? That leaves the other open spot for Wilson, assuming Leaky is a PG.

It certainly would be crowded with Leaky/Francis/Harris/Wilson/Puff/Williams all competing for three starting spots. Platek as a senior too.

I like Wilson fine but I think I like Puff better. And to me, it does seem like we could reasonably only pull in one. I know they're different classes, but why would Puff come to CH if he's theoretically behind Leaky, Wilson, and hopefully Zaire (and possibly Springer)?

Even if it clouds the Puff Johnson waters, here’s why you take Wilson:

1) He’s ranked right in that ballpark where you’re going to get a really good player, but have him for 2-3 seasons. It’s no surprise that Beilein secured him the first time around because he was very adept at finding and winning with that type of player.

2) A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Zaire can easily end up at Stanford and Puff can certainly go elsewhere himself. These are not givens in the class. If they were both committed then I think Roy and staff would possibly save the remaining future scholarships for another big and a PG instead of pursuing Wilson, but that’s not the case.

3) We don’t know where the roster will stand a year from now. Would anyone be shocked if Leaky took off and became a first-round prospect? If Bacot starts the whole year for a Final Four team, can we feel confident he won’t strike while the iron is hot? What happens if someone else transfers?

The bottom line is Wilson is a legitimate talent who is absolutely worthy of a scholarship and can contribute right away on a contending team. This would not be a roster depth signing like Platek or Huffman. I want to see Puff and Zaire in Carolina blue as well, but the fact is, they can commit at any time. If they want it that badly, they should seize the opportunity. If Wilson takes a spot, then let’s get to work.

I agree. If Jalen wants to come to Carolina this year, I'm all for it.

Another question now is does the Juwan Howard hire lure Wilson back to Michigan? It's an option.

Not watching this one too closely myself. Just a wait and see situation, and we'll be good either way.

Rider? Buffalo? (Yeah Buffalo had a good season last year) No knocks on the kid but not sure he is ready for UNC.
You forgot to add Kansas, Tenn,Texas,Florida, Miami just to name a few. Those smaller school offers came when he was in 2019 class and before travel season started but he should end up in top 30 or so next rankings. Top 3 kid in 2020 in NC might be pushing for 1 or 2 by summers end. Just to add he did what he wanted too last session with CP3 on EYBL. Based off where Jalen Cone is in the 2019 rankings the kid who signed to V Tech Hall probably would be a top 60 kid in 2019 since he was already ranked hire than Cone in 2020.

First off, I agree with leaky being the only guy right now to project as our wing after next season but it is complicated. Leaky was a PG prior to coming to UNC, he had a growth spurt up to 6'8" (docs actually expect another inch or 2 from him) yet continued to play the point. He has grown in to the point forward position, had some brief stints at the point for us last season. Factor in there is no way Cole stays around for a soph season and the fact that we do not know how far Francis will be able to come back, we don't know if Ant can give us reliable back up duty at the point, much less be there full time if Francis is not able to and as of now we do not have another starting level PG committed for that 2020 class.

My point in this is to suggest, if things remain as they are now and with the strong likelihood that Roy will get at least 1 of the big time wings he has offered (3 big time wings offered between the 2019 and 2020 classes) it is more likely that Roy gets a wing or 2 that are starter quality than it is we get a starter level PG (with Roach off the table isn't Love the only quality PG we have an offer out to at this time). Then worse case is we have to move leaky to the point either full time as a starter or maybe partime but as much time at the point as the 3.

Now I fully expect Roy to get at least 1 big time wing 3 (I expect 2), my favorite is Puff, I also fully expect Roy to snag a starter level PG and I do expect Francis by the 2020 season to be back as far as we can expect but I nor anyone else can know if that will be back far enough to play at this level. I also fully expect that our front court, that I believe will still have Bacot as a soph, will be very attractive to a 5 star level PG if that PG can see a lot of projected PT else we will be looking at a 4 star level PG if Francis does make it all the way back. Offer out already to Love, I expect Roy to be shopping for wings and PGs this recruiting season and I like his current wing shopping list, like Love to but there are going to be a couple other PGs to really take a leap in the rankings and become hot recruits.

Aren't they all dook leans?
That narrative is starting to change. It began last yr. Yes dook still had the no. 1 class, but they whiffed hard on their primary targets except for carey, and if he doesn't develop into a oad big the wheels will probably come off their oad machine

I may be in the minority, but I don't want their one and done machine to stop. Yes, they bring in really good players every year, but it's not going to bring King Rat any more national titles.

If rankings matter Cam will be a much higher ranked prospect in 2021 than 2020 talented kid. Nothing like our last few point guards more Kendall Marshall which is still amazing.
