2021 Recruiting Thread

From Stock Risers:

As far as his timeline goes though, Hunter Sallis says he’s unsure due to deadlines on in-person visits: “I plan on trying to wait to see if I can take visits because I really want to get a feel for the campus in person before I commit somewhere so that’s why I’ve been waiting so long.”

Okay Hunter, come on over when you and staff get it set up, you'll love CH.

And I really would like to get involved with a development big. And when thinking of bigs that could develop for Roy that have the pedigree, potential and coachability, Ryan Mutombo comes to mind. I really wish the staff would take a look at him.

Yep - would love that 4 man class.

I have no idea why UNC isn't more involved in Mutumbo. I think a few months back one of the premium guys said Roy doesn't think he can play at this level but I'm not sure I buy that.

The only reason that makes a little bit of sense to me is that he doesn't run well at all. We know Roy wants bigs that can get up the court or at least ones that he can mold to get up the court well as juniors and seniors. Maybe he doesn't think Mutumbo could get there.

Anyone seen Breon Pass play last year? Rising senior...solid player it seems. Anyway choosing bbal full time over fball.

With this decision, Pass becomes the latest high-major point guard target to emerge in the 2021 class. He is not an explosive athlete, but is fluid, crafty and has some wiggle to his game. Pass has the chance to take off in the coming months now that his entire focus is on the basketball side.

Wouldn't count Chandler out. Roy is having his second Zoom meeting with him within 8 days. Scheduled for early next week. David Sisk is the new recruiting guy on Premium replacing Clint. The guy is good, to say the least. He is adding some good intel on recruits.

Rumors floating around tonight that Chandler is about to commit somewhere soon maybe as soon as the next few days. Most think it will be to UT.

Is this year just another extension of the pattern of missing on every other recruiting class?

2014 - 10/10 class. Carried us for years
2015 - Miss. Ingram went to Duke. Saved by Luke significantly outperforming his ranking
2016 - Good class, didn't develop
2017 - Massive miss. Directly led to the awful year last year
2018 - Good class, but 2 OADs
2019 - Despite getting Cole Anthony, a miss. Had to scramble and add two grad transfers.
2020 - Legendarily good class
2021 - ???????

I don't want to call it early, but watching Roy pointlessly chase after Chandler when every other person on the planet knows he's going to Tennessee has me frustrated.

Roy sat in his chair and talked into a computer for an hour.

That's an odd way to describe "pointlessly chasing"

But the opportunity cost. If we are interested in a point guard, options are dwindling, and we had our only scholarship offer out to a guy that was never coming here.

Several guards UNC was interested in have already committed elsewhere.

The true cost of swinging and missing on the big targets is that it often causes you to miss out on the second tier players as well. And then you find yourself adding a grad transfer in the spring. No thanks. We are too good of a program to not have the ability of self-reflection.

Well at least Chandler committed today to UT as expected and now Roy can move on. Sallis and Dunn are very important recruits to land.

I'm sure you'll get flak for simply having a differing opinion, but I agree. I definitely feel shades of 2019 here. We're in a decent position with a few top guys, but in none of them do we really feel like a favorite. Even D'marco Dunn is starting to look like a battle instaed instead of a surefire snag. Meanwhile, we spurn guys who might have been easier gets (Mutombo, Reid, Walker (2022) etc.) for pipe-dream long shots.

The amount of time we spend on some of these dudes who do nothing but spin their sweet lies about how much they "love UNC" and drag us along is hair-pullingly frustrating. I find myself happy when dudes like Banchero cut us, because we know Roy would keep chugging along otherwise.

So many of our recruiting "woes" over the years have been self-inflicted. It's really like flipping a coin with our recruiting. One class he's pulling in Championship caliber talent away from other big guys like Dook, KU, etc. the next we're scrambling across the finish line for triple digit recruits in March.

All I know is, I don't ever want another 14-19 season.

We’ve discussed it many times on this board but when Roy locks in on a kid, even when the whole world knows he’s not coming to UNC, Roy keeps prioritizing him until the end. It has cost us some kids over the years but Roy is loyal and it’s just in his DNA. It is an amazing trait of his but in the recruiting game, there are times I wish he would pull out of the race sooner and put efforts elsewhere.

Maybe someone can answer this for me. Sorry if this seems trivial or if I’ve missed something. What is up with the sudden interest in Tennessee?

Thanks for answering . Saw Paolo just had a crystal ball for the vols

Yeah, would not hurt my feelings at all if they end up a package deal (Chandler and Paolo) with both ending up at Tenn and NOT DUKE!

FYI, not sure if anyone has mentioned it here but Ky recruiting has taken a big hit, Kenny Payne has left to become an assistant for the Nicks. He was the guy directly involved with many of Ky's bit gets, sorta like Capel was for duke.

Another example what I'm talking about is that I hope our recruitment of Jabari Smith doesn't negatively impact our recruitment of Trey Kaufman.

I hope we are putting the full-court press on Kaufman, because he could be massively successful here and I think we'd have an excellent shot at landing him.

Jabari? Who knows.

Was only a matter of time Kessler would become the new Harrison Barnes.

Uhh its not even been a year. Again, he was Dook "lock" and he committed to UNC. We are coming off the possibly, and time will tell, Roy's best recruiting class, since Lawson and company, but we are still questioning his tactics. Makes sense

He has the 2nd best recruiting class coming in, has Styles on board for 2021.
I just hope to see them play. Might not be that great a class if several of them leave without playing. Not a knock against anyone, just the unfortunate reality caused by this pandemic.

I think we’ll see them, but it is disappointing to not have the pleasure of a full season’s growth - a hallmark of Roy’s coaching.

They will be thrust into ACC play and will have to sink or swim. It will be a tall order.

We hear this same spiel every single time we managed to land that one longshot out of the tons that we've offered and missed on. Yet that single recruiting win becomes justification for years to come. And just like Barnes was brought up in every occasion possible, I'm sure we'll being hearing about Kessler until at least 2030.

Point is, These are exceptions, not the rule. Every recruit isn't going to pull a 180 no matter how much effort Roy puts in, and to expect that every time is unfair. No reason not to be skeptical on our chances with dudes like this until they prove otherwise. Especially when they'll tell you how much they loved UNC growing up then cut us the very next day.

This is literally no different than every low ranked recruit being the next Luke Maye.

It was less than a year go. You probably wanted Roy to stop recruiting Kessler, am I right? You and me don't know how recruiting works. Let him work. The man has 3 national championships, if he thinks he has a shot at someone, then let's give him the benefit of the doubt. Didnt you and ever other outside expert predict Puff to Arizona? That's two guys in one class that "flipped" to UNC

You think they will go to the NBA without a year playing? I dont see it.

Arizona landed a 4 star combo guard. Dont be surprised if Dunn is a Heel. Also Sallis perceived dream school is UNC, i wonder if other teams will stop recruiting him.

Why do we have to go through this "Oh just trust Roy" bit any time someone thinks a recruit is not coming here? You realize we can have faith in Roy without trusting 17 year old children to reward his efforts with a commitment, right?

We already know how this argument goes, because it happens every recruiting thread the moment someone suggests we might not land certain recruit(s). Which is always followed up by someone engaging in whataboutism by listing off Roy's accomplishments or past recruiting wins in an attempt to shut down any opposing discussion rather than actually addressing what they've said.

Like I said, it's the Luke Maye argument all over again. Kessler and Puff are the exceptions not the rule. For every "flip" in the last couple of years you could name at least 3 guys that only proved to be wastes of time. Hell, Kessler is the least typical 5 * recruit we've ever recruited; one who actually named UNC's education as a primary factor in his decision. How often do you think that happens? Only other guy I can think of in the last 5 classes we were involved in was Ziaire.

Interesting how no one ever keeps their same energy when we miss the Nnajis/Moores/Careys/etc. of the world they implied Roy could get, but are quick to turn around and call me or others out for being wrong about those rare, surprising snags despite never explicitly saying we were going to get them in the first place.

And before a certain pack of looney toons tries to come in here and play the game of straw man: No I don't think the "sky is falling" or that it's doom and gloom.

We should have a good bit of our 2020 haul left over to carry us even if there's a weak class in 2021. I like our chances a bit more with Dunn since Vanderbilt and Arizona both have Guards at his position, and I think we have as decent a chance as any with Sallis and Houstan. Clearly we'll be fine.

It's a shame I have to add this in, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The 2021 cycle has barely started, and yiu are crying like a little girl. Dude, we have a loaded class coming. You ever think 2021 recruits see that, and think let's wait it out? We are in good shape with a few recruits, with Styles on board. Relax dude..

The 2021 cycle has barely started

It bears repeating, 53 of the top 100 have already committed. 24 of the top 50.

Sallis is probably our best shot (probably our only) at a 5 star, and he is far from a lock. I hear UK is about to offer him as well.

Even 4 star options like Dunn and Kaufman are looking like battles.

So, do you actually have an actual response to what I've said or have you resorted to midwit, juvenile insults now?
