Coronavirus

for starters, don’t cancel things months down the road.

The message should be “we are pausing (this activity) while our experts assess the best way to move forward in dealing with the Wuhan Flu. Although we don’t exactly know when this will be, we are confident in this country’s medical experts and look forward to proceeding when they deem fit”

Seems to me that’s just as much of a panic response as canceling the events but I do like the wording. So with the ncaa tourney and other events that can’t be postponed or paused due to logistics of stadiums availability and students leaving do you favor canceling them?

sure. But again it can be done in ways that don’t feed the panic.

Here's an explanation why that's happening. I'm not buying it (ba dum tiss):

But why toilet paper? A simple scroll through my social media pages shows many are asking the same question: COVID-19 doesn't cause gastrointestinal symptoms, so why the need for excess amounts of toilet paper?

Dimitrios Tsivrikos, a lecturer in consumer and business psychology at University College London, told CNBC's Taylor that toilet paper is an "icon" of widespread panic. "When you enter a supermarket, you're looking for value and high volumes," and people are drawn to toilet paper's large packaging, Tsivrikos said.

And that's likely not the only reason toilet paper is flying off the shelves.

Steven Taylor, a professor and clinical psychologist at the University of British Columbia who specializes in the psychology of pandemics, told NBC News' Manning-Schaffel that panic buying occurs "when people worry about the scarcity of supplies."

Bloomberg's Ari Altstedter and Jinshan Hong report that, when the new coronavirus first emerged and began spreading throughout mainland China, "rumours started that Hong Kong's supply of toilet paper would be affected" because "the city imports most of its goods" from China. That triggered some people in Hong Kong to begin stockpiling the product.

From there, so-called "fear contagion" likely played a role, Sander van der Linden, an assistant professor of social psychology at Cambridge University, told Taylor. "When people are stressed their reason is hampered, so they look at what other people are doing. If others are stockpiling it leads you to engage in the same behavior," he explained.

And sure enough, Altstedter and Hong write, "It wasn't long after coronavirus cases started appearing in Singapore that toilet paper started disappearing. In Australia, a growing number of people have racked up charges related to toilet paper induced fighting, as hashtags #toiletpapergate and #toiletpapercrisis have trended."

The practice has gotten so pervasive that Andy Yap, a professor of organizational behavior at the Singapore campus of INSEAD business school, told Altstedter and Hong, "Even people who were queuing up in the supermarket line to buy toilet paper … have no idea why they are buying toilet paper. … They just see other people doing it and start doing it themselves because they are afraid they might lose out."

Yeah, I read that earlier. It's crazy how the mind can work sometimes. I would just recommend that everyone skip out on Mexican food until this all dies down.

I seriously don’t get the toilet paper thing. I mean, you can wipe your ass with other things, ya know? Kleenex, paper towels, wet wipes, etc. it’s just incredibly strange that those panicking about imminent death would think stocking up on toilet paper is the answer. Water? Sure. I get that. Medicine? Again, I get that. Toilet paper? WTF?

It's like this my son is scared of storms he is afraid a tornado is going to hit the house and kill us all. Very unlikely about the same chances the coronavirus is going to kill him. So when we have a storm I can see him getting twitchy I remain calm when he comes to me asking about it and his voice is shaking I remain calm. Even if I'm getting worried I remain calm. I say to him we are fine don't you worry.

I do this for a couple of first off in a time of real crisis it is easier to talk to someone calm than someone that is losing it. The other reason is I want the people I am responsible for to feel secure.

Wording is everything, but then again the media worded it and did just what they wanted to do they had a shit fit all over the TV and panicked the country.

Roy Cooper thats a real piece of work gets on TV and says keep your groups small and avoid large crowds, while we are cancelling golf matches a game that is played outside a game where you if you take the fans off of the course you could walk all day and never be any closer then 10 feet from only one person your caddy!

But yet I loaded my kids up in the car this morning and took them to school to be in a building with 1000 other little nasty snot nose brats that don't wash there hands, pick their noses, touch their face and drink out of community water fountains.

So my question is, is this dangerous or not to dangerous to go to Walmart but not to dangerous to send kids to school.

My point is if it is to dangerous for grown men to play golf or men to play a basketball game in a empty arena then why haven't my kids been told to stay at home? Does their health not matter as much as over paid basketball players?

But hey its easier to push an agenda when the masses are afraid at home with nothing to do, all the TV sports are canceled and all there is to watch is the news that is telling you how bad this is and if they didn't do all this the Coronavirus or new version of the black plague would wipe the world into mass extinction!

Mission accomplished!

I’m talking about the nation’s leaders who are in charge of the response. Of course there’s going to be idiotic partisan bickering over it but when it comes to the people who are actually in charge of the response, trump and pence, I don’t feel like they panicked

Ok, but don’t you agree that there are millions of people who think Trump is literally Hitler incarnate and as such get their news from the lead Dems and media?

Haven't seen anything projecting anything remotely close to that. If that doesn't happen in China, I think it's almost impossible for it to happen here.
Well... I realize the population has increased a great deal since 1918, but, the Spanish Flu killed about 675,000 people in the USA, and it was the worst human disease pandemic in history. I realize Italy is getting hammered, as is Iran... and, maybe France in relation to those countries. But, a million deaths would rock this country to its core.

ETA: If there are a million deaths... that would mean 300 million are infected, maybe? I don't do math good.

I’m not interested in what the dems and their sheep think. If they want to panic that’s on them. The issue is whether or not the us response as a whole to the virus (led by trump and pence) reflects panic. I don’t think it does. That’s all I’m saying.

No one should at all be surprised that Italy is getting hammered. They do tons of business with the Chinese- there is (or was) a direct flight from Wuhan to Milan that was in service til mid-Feb. And Italy also has the oldest (or one of the oldest) populations in Europe.

Aren’t the Iranians in bed with the Chinese too?

Bottom line is that China is to blame for this outbreak. They lied and obfuscated about the nature of this thing for month and wouldn’t allow anyone from the West to come in to learn about the virus and help with containment.

Here’s some more panic (and incitement of panic) @heelmanwilm

Yeah... see... let the measures we've taken have some kind of effect before we jump way ahead at this point. We've officially freaked-out most of the population. Now we have unprecedented measures in place... let's let the machinations do what they can do and not pour more gas on the panic fire. You're liable to have people killing each other over hand sanitizer and having a huge spike in heart attacks and high blood pressure infirmities.

There have already been reports of several fights happening at stores over things like toilet paper.

I hope to hell that, after this is over, we can somehow find it in our best interest to make some things here, or Mexico or somewhere(s) besides one location that just also happens to be where most germs that have spread the globe originated.

It reminds me of when those IV bags were unavailable after the hurricane wiped out Puerto Rico. That was where they were manufactured. I understand the profit margin incentive, but I think even the greediest of entrepreneur can understand that their bodies are susceptible to germs like the poorest of the poor. It's hard to maintain profits when your customers are dying. Maybe stop outsourcing everything to China.

How did we ever manage up until 1857?

My mom (who is 74) still remembers her grandfather's outhouse in rural central VA and catalogs and newspaper being stacked to wipe... and this was in like 1951-52.

What “agenda” is being pushed?

The agenda that the president is the cause of the shut downs because he didn't do the right things to slow and the market crashes because his policies failed!

The virus is very real the hysteria is man made!

The media is doing with this like they do everytime someone shoots up a crowd by using it to take guns.

I am betting by the time the presidential debates come around and this is all over with and the world is somewhat back to normal the dems talk about how Trumps economy crashed because of his policies is no mention of the virus having the most cause in the crash.

I'm still wondering why if it's so bad and we should have events with more than a few attendees then why hasn't my middle schoolers been told that schools will be shut down!

So what is it? Is this a pandemic or not? Why are our kids here in NC not being protected? Does a little ol' school system here in Cleveland county NC not big enough to scare enough people to shut it down?

The hypocrisy of this course of action really is comical!

We should all raise a collective middle finger to the CCP. F**k them. They suppressed all news about this outbreak, did nothing about those revolting bush meat markets where it likely started, and jailed doctors who tried to speak out.

The language you’re using here is exactly what we don’t need right now. Sure some Dems have played politics with this issue, but so have the other side and yet you still insist that this virus is a means of “taking down the president.” That is complete lunacy.

This is a pandemic. Make no mistake. And it will effect everyone in this country one way or another.

I never said the virus was a mean to take down the president I said the reaction and the media scare tactics were!

They are already getting off into the woods on this thing by now calling people racist for referring that this come from China!

I stick by what I said 2 weeks and this is a done deal mark it down. They will drive this into the ground then stuff will start back going and this will next be taked about again until the debates.

I would love nothing more for this to end in two weeks.

But health experts aren’t saying this. If this hasn’t ended in Italy or China in 2 weeks, what on earth makes you believe it will end in that amount of time here?

I’m inclined to believe their word over yours.

Trump supporters are like little ducklings following their mom around. He quacks some nonsense about this virus not being a big deal, and a conspiracy to make him look bad, and basically all of his supporters come on here and repeat exactly what he’s saying.

But of course they only really like him because he pisses off liberals.

Shout out to any fellow preppers! I have six months of food and the means to purify even the filthiest water. I also have a stockpile of liquor and cigarettes that I am willing to trade, at a premium, for gold, silver, ammo, or chickens.
