You know from previous posts/discussions that I fully support your choice to make the decision that's best for you. However, I take issue with the idea of blindly not getting a flu shot and really don't understand why there is so much widespread resistance to it.
Salk, of polio vaccine fame developed the first one in the 30's and it became widespread in the 40's, so it's been around a very long time - unlike many of the objections to the current vax debate. If you have one of the specific reasons not to do so like an egg allergy or problems with guillain barre (sp?), it makes sense to avoid it, but otherwise it is pretty universally considered very safe.
The downside to not taking it? An estimated 61,000 people die in the US each year from flu. Countless others get really ill and suffer needlessly. Even when the "experts" don't correctly predict all the strains, the shot still helps a person not get it and helps them get over it quicker if they do. Very little risk compared to the payoff, but again, your choice.
On the shingles front, it's a cousin of chicken pox, not the flu. You can and people do get it a second time and shingles sucks as you well know, particularly an outbreak on the face. Ask your doc next time you see her/him, it may help you to get the shot.
Your body, your choice.
