Hubert Davis…RESIGN

Hubert experience coaching is similar to Roy's when he became coach of Kansas. Roy was on the hot seat at Kansas for a while, but they stuck with him. Even though he never won a NCAA championship at Kansas, he had competitive teams every year.
Ugh, I hate when people do this. Sure it's similar to Roy, but it's also similar to hundreds of coaches that have been fired. Comparing him to Roy (or any coach) is horrible and to be honest, it's unfair to him.

Okay, let's judge him after he has an establishment of his recruited players. To your point it's similar to a lot who eventually were successful, versus those who were fired. Believe he should be given an opportunity, before passing judgement. JMHO !!!!!

I agree. I've said before that we won't be able to tell what kind of coach he is until after year three. I think it's understandable for people to be upset right now, though. Hubert doesn't seem to be adjusting anything and his rotations leave a lot to be desired.

Problem imo is coaching is too insular and chummy chummy. Roy and Hubert built a strong relationship and unfortunately that clouded his judgement on whether or not Hubert was actually qualified to replace him.

It's pretty apparent it was an awful choice.

Roy saw him as like a son or nephew to mentor to take over the family business. Many times that also fails and the family business goes bust.

Now we are in a race to see which alum will fail first and most spectacularly - Roy's choice or Rat-face's choice.

I love Hubert the man. After seeing this year of coaching without basically making any adjustments, in game, substitution patterns, play calling, all around management, I don’t see him becoming an elite coach at Carolina. I’m not going to bash him regardless. If Roy tagged me to coach the Heels I would have jumped on it also. He is trying I’m sure, he just doesn’t have what it takes. Not everyone is a HOF coach.
If we lose a few to the portal, which I totally expect, next year may be worse so strap in.
I will still watch the team play, even without the old feeling that we always had the chance to win every game because of who sat on the bench.
I can regardless say Hubert’s team beat K in his last NCAA regular season game and in his very last NCAA tournament game! No matter what’s happening at the current moment that always brings a smile to my face.
Go Heels!

Roy having the audacity to give Hubert Davis this job with no coaching experience is like giving your son that hasn't even gotten his license the keys to your Lamborghini and then defending his driving as he keeps crashing it into a wall.

I blame Roy Williams much more for this mess than I do Hubert Davis. Hubert just took what was offered. Who wouldn’t? This is on Roy.

Correct. Anybody would’ve taken a multi-million dollar job if handed to them. This is on Roy and Bubba. They created this mess and Bubba will ultimately need to have the guts to fix it regardless of what Roy thinks about it.

Agreed. As for Hubert he needs to get back to Carolina basketball. Fast breaking off made baskets, secondary break, inside out with 2 bigs (one that is able to run the court and score off the dribble.) He needs to get away from this offense he is trying to run, without much success. The offense we have been watching isn’t Carolina basketball by any means. He should know that offense well he played in it and sat beside Roy long enough.
JMHO

In all fairness Roy said "he's coached the JV team" .. 🙄

Please, let's live in reality: HD will not resign and he will not be fired. That would make Roy and the AD look bad with their selecting HD, so HD will be our head coach next year. Just accept it and move on.

The AD needs to resign one or more of HD's assistants, and hire several assistant coaches -- not necessarily in the "family" -- who know and have implemented a system that has been shown to work, know how to first and foremost coach defense, and know how to make intra-game adjustments to the defense and offense. Larry Brown or somebody similar would fill the need. I'm sure the experts on this forum can come up with more candidates.

Hubert did just fine with Roy's mess last season, when they had their lucky run in the tournament.. so why are we not blaming Hubert this season?

Dumbest excuse I have ever heard honestly. If Hubert has done everything possible to fix this, then I would say that's a correct statement. However, he's done nothing to try to fix this and acts like a deer in headlights during press conferences.

I would welcome Larry Brown as an assistant coach, even with all his baggage.

Could not read all the post, but if he didn't have the commitment from some players. This discussion about his job may be warranted. Not HD fault, but in most cases heads have to roll.

Ummm. This will be embarrassing if we don't make the tourney, can't hide from that.

And why exactly is it that you care? You're a pitt fan, right?
Some people think the poster is Jason Capel, and that is why he cares about UNC basketball looking like garbage. When a guy is not coaching at his alma mater, he always has 2 team that are favorite.

That ultimately was my take on John Bunting. He just took the job that was offered by his alma mater. That he was unprepared for it and got the offer was not his fault. He did not offer the job to himself.

It also would be embarrassing to get in the Tourney and lose ugly in the first game.

Absolutely. I'd also throw in the former players/media who were pushing this narrative of how this was "such a good hire for UNC", but to a far lesser extent.

At the end of the day, it's on Roy for putting him in a situation he had no business being in yet.

This is true, but I think it goes a little deeper than just the money. There are probably many former players who hope to one day coach their alma matter. Not even just at UNC. So I imagine this is/was Hubert's dream job. And coupled with the endorsement and support from a mentor and HOFer, there's no way he could turn it down.

lol! I guess that's all it takes to coach at an all time elite basketball program nowadays.

Apparently so. I guess UNC and dook finally have something in common in that they both hired a head coach without previous D1 HC experience. I actually thought if UNC wanted to "keep it in the family" they would have least looked at Wes Miller .. along with a few others.

It’s not just results, it’s decisions and sub patterns. I would be a lot more tolerant if he actually made adjustments that seem obvious. He’s a great guy that I want being an example to young people, but his coaching and adjustments are suspect at best.
That sounds like a guy who should be an assistant coach or HC at a lower tier program.

My take: Davis will get one more year, maybe two to set things right if Heels miss the NCAA tournament this season. Personally, if the struggles continue next season, I will be ready for a new coach, but he can make the case to coach the incoming recruits in the class of 2024. He will be without excuse if they are still mediocre then, and that would certainly be it for him at UNC. For those saying he should have time to build his program and bring all his players in and develop them, remember the era we are in. Because of NIL and lenient transfer rules, D1 rosters are less stable than NBA rosters, so I believe it is fair to expect success almost immediately, unlike when Dean took over the program. If/when the time comes for another coach, I want a genuine coaching search, including those with no prior association with UNC but are capable of becoming part of UNC family. Also, no more hiring coaches who have never been a head coach at Division 1 or higher level to lead the UNC program, or retreads who failed at their previous head coaching job (Steve Robinson). We are a higher level program than that, and we need to act like it and not sell this job short.

Yeah, Wes was the guy on the UNC coaching tree that made the most sense if they were that desperate to give it to a UNC guy. He checked off a lot of boxes that the rest of the guys didn't.
  • Born and raised in Greensboro
  • Was considered the best coach under 40 by ESPN
  • Young, so possibly a ~30+ year career ahead of him, but already had 10 years of experience (more than I can say for Hubert)
  • Did a hell of a coaching job by turning a 7-24 UNCG program into a consistent 20 win program and multi NCAA tournament team basically from the ground up.
  • Continued to run it instead of bolting to the next job after just 1-2 years of success like a lot of these guys do
All of that in his 30s. It truly baffles me how anyone can say Hubert objectively got this job compared to that.
