OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

I'll go on record and say if Zion comes to UNC I would hate him being allowed to wear Phil's number. I was on record being against it for Bagley as well. It's not my call in either situation, and if he comes here and wears Phil's number I'll have to accept that, but I will not be happy about it.

Agree on all this. Brownell was quite literally coaching for his job last year, and knew he/his team had just blown a win that would've gone a long way toward helping him retain his job. He probably just snapped in the heat of the moment.

Yeah, that is exactly what happened IMO. I mean, benches and players yap back and forth all the time.

As for Zion, I've been on record as saying if he came here it would be a boost for perception more than anything but he is a bit overhyped. His best position in college would be at the 4 where he could use his athleticism and strength to be really good. He won't play there though. Best case scenario for us would be a better version of Pinson because he has solid handles and passes well. Just can't shoot. He isn't coming here anyway though.

I've never cared much about the numbers. Didn't care with Bagley and don't care with Zion. That is for people in the program to care more about.

Agreed. I don't think Roy would let him do it though. It's not really Phil's decision to make.

Yeah, we'll see. At this point, it's putting the cart before the horse because Zion has to commit to us first, so I'm not worried about it at the moment. But if he does choose to come here, hopefully he can choose a number besides 10, 12, 20, 23, 33, 50, or 52

I wonder how many UNC fans would be able to connect the players to those retired numbers, without doing any research that is . .

Very few would be able to get them all. One of them is quite challenging, even for a die-hard.

I was thinking the same, and it would likely be even tougher if the question was this :

Name the 7 players that have their jerseys 'retired' in the Dean Smith Center's rafters . .

12 - Phil
23 - the GOAT
50 - Psycho T
33 - Antawn
52 - Big Game James

10 and 20, one of them was probably Larry Miller or Billy C? But that was before my time.
10 is Lennie Rosenbluth and 20 is George Glamack. There's some other dude name Cobb who has his jersey retired too, but no number. I got that shit down.

Yeah it's hard to get by with no number these days. So if someone wants Jack Cobb's no-number, have at it!
Zion could wear this, it would be called "The number formerly known as 12"

I'm surprised there isn't more outrage on THR over Zion being given permission to wear Phil Ford's number if he goes to UNC. It was a pretty big deal when Bagley did it.

It was a huge deal. And personally, I'd tell Zion to take a hike before I would pull a number (let alone Phil's) out of the rafters for a OAD kid who's investment in UNC is zilch. F*ck no.

Yes sir, you do . . !

Isn't just awesome that Len attends as many UNC games as he can . . ? I give that man a ton of credit for his dedication to our BBall program . . May God Bless him forever.

I got to meet him at a game once, it was pretty cool. In fact, of the 6 living players with numbers retired, I've met 4 of them. All but 23 and 52.

Don't forget about number interlockingnc. That guy was a beast.

My favorite memory of last season wasn't winning the NCAA Tourney, although it was awesome. I met Phil Ford in Bon Secours at the first-round game. It was the first time I've felt that "celebrity star struck" feeling in about 25 years. He was really cool. We went to rival high schools, so, we had a common thread and that's what we talked about! Well, that and I told him that he was the star when I was a little kid and saw UNC for the first time. "You making me feel old, son!" And, I never even thought to take a smartphone pic with him. It's just not an instinct for me.

Yeah, Phil Ford is the nicest guy you can ever talk to. I ran into him a number of times venturing around Chapel HIll. He's as awesome as they come. I remember running into Jamison when I was about 10 or 11 years old, and he was the nicest player I've ever come across. He signed my shirt, gave me a pat on the back and told me thanks for coming. We engaged in short conversation too, but I was too star struck to really comprehend what was going on.

White and Little named McD’s AA’s. Congrats to them!

Related note, White played against the school my boss’s son attends this weekend and lit them up. Not the strongest competition but still impressive from what I heard

Was that the game he had 46? Apparently he looked very impressive from some who were there.

According to my boss he had like 32 or something, but I think they pulled him fairly early. They won something like 105-65

Cold early but made a few in a row. Clemson sloppy and have fumbled to OOB that would have been open looks. Nice start though.
