OOTB Carolina football discussion thread

Were there ever any disciplinary issues during Mack’s first tenure? I can’t remember ever hearing about any.

What do you mean? Is there something suspicious or something "amiss" here? My only concern is that the Covid thing will screw-up the season being played!

Whoa fellas, I was simply saying I'm not used to all this high profile recruiting success without something happening to derail our hopes, lol. Mack has never had a hint of impropriety that I'm aware of and I don't really expect any now. Don't let me spoil the fun...I wasn't implying anything is amiss, just shocked that things are going so well. The Mack is indeed back.

Yeah I knew what you meant, I was just curious if there ever were any issues before when he was here.

We could really use a couple of years without significant injuries. On the other hand, we have a lot of guys with more experience than they would have had if we didn’t have so many injuries last year.

The one positive thing about that situation. A lot of young guys got reps. That bodes well for this year. That depth is a significant advantage over last year. I think I read a few days ago that we lost 6 games by a total of 26 points. Hopefully, better depth will translate into more victories in Fewer close games and more wins in the ones that are close.

If our lines gel, we’ll be hell.

that is correct. And if you like to play numbers games, we actually beat our 11 combined opponents (throwing out the Mercer game) by 70 points, or an average of just over six points a game. It comes out this way mostly because of the lopsided wins over Temple, State, and GT. NO ONE beat us resoundingly. You hate losing those close ones; but when you look at it like this combined with other positive factors, only the most pessimistic of naysayers aren't expecting good things immediately ahead.

(This is assuming my math is correct, and that's never a given).

My druthers would be a small margin of victory in every game, excepting only one really lopsided win over...guess who.

Not a huge college football fan here, so I ask a rather basic question...what is Mack doing differently in recruiting that previous coaches didn't do?

It's incredible how UNC has a top 10 class.

He's always been a great recruiter and has hired a great recruiting staff. A lot of good things going on with the program right now (upgraded facilities, donor interest and renewed fan interest). It's also helped that he's still a big name in the area with NC high school coaches and these kids' parents. The state also has a historically good year for talent.

ETA: Go watch his introductory press conference and tell me you wouldn't want to play for him. He could easily be a politician if he wasn't a coach.

Great recruiters recruit the parents. Roy, dean and Kay are great examples. (And why Roy hates handlers) Parents want to feel Secure and that their kids are in good hands. I think that’s where fedora lacked. He definitely is not the “fatherly” type that Mack is.

Mack killed it at Texas in regards to recruiting. He did well when he was here many moons ago. He’s just a fantastic recruiter and, like Roy, a genuine human being. As others have stated, parents like that. It’s not a shock our recruiting has picked up substantially. However, I’m not sure anyone saw us recruiting at the level of our 2021 class. These are uncharted waters for us.

I'd say he did better than pretty well. At one point late in his first stretch here, we had the third most players in the NFL, behind only FSU and Notre Dame.

And to be honest, I saw it coming, at least potentially. On the Main Board, sometime during Fedora's last two seasons and before Mack was little more than a pipe dream, I was roundly ridiculed for saying that UNC could collect Championship caliber talent. I've always felt that way. If this school had gotten behind football like it did BB, I have no doubt we'd have competed for a nattie at some point.

Are you insinuating that Carolina football is a “sleeping giant“?

sells mom and dad...great relationship builder...loyal af.

honestly, i try and compare head coaches a lot to other head coaches and it’s really hard to find an equally impressive person.

haha, I know I know.

I'm a huge NFL guy so I try to give the wife one day of the weekend. Something something something happy wife happy life?

Bringing you beer and making you sandwiches at halftime doesn’t make her happy?

UNC has announced that 37 out of 429 student athletes, coaches, and staff recently tested for COVID-19 have tested positive. They won’t name the SAs or identify which sports, probably for privacy reasons. Anyone testing positive has to quarantine for 14 days. Football has suspended voluntary workouts.

Stanford announced today that it’s permanently discontinuing 11 of its NCAA-sanctioned sports.

The Ivy League announced today that it will not host any sports this fall. You might recall that the Ivy League was the first conference to cancel its basketball tournament this spring.

It seems increasingly likely we won’t have college football or any other fall sports this season.

Can't have spring sports without football, so if football is cancelled all sports will be cancelled. The only possible exception would be basketball since it pays for itself.

Ya I think Stanford might have said them cancelling wasn't Covid-related, but I assume they were taking the opportunity to not lose money on unprofitable sports when they expect to not have a football season to make the money to support it.

I'd probably bet on no college season at this point, except maybe for the SEC. I think the NFL still definitely has a season though.

You can fly on a plane, and you can protest in the streets... but, you can't sit in outdoor football stadiums.

Looks like they could at least play a local schedule, where traveling isn't needed. Have the Big 4 teams play. Games that wouldn't require overnight travel. Maybe play some other teams in-state, just to have some games.

It helps to have a lot of good recruiters. Fedora never had a staff like we do now. Mack has been huge when comes to helping make things happen, donations, support staff, etc. Our support staff is way ahead of VaTech, though I think they're starting to fill some new positions. We're pretty much going toe-to-toe with Clemson and Miami. You don't really recruit at this level without that type of commitment.
