OOTB Carolina football discussion thread

The B1G and Pac-12 have cancelled fall sports. Ten B1G football players have myocarditis as a result of COVID infections, if I‘m understanding the reports correctly.

That explains a lot then. I had read that the president of the B1G was specifically concerned about the long term cardiovascular impact of the virus, now we know why.

I can't imagine the other power conferences still playing either

ACC and SEC are digging their heels in. The idea of playing in empty stadiums doesn’t seem to be getting any attention but IMO that would be the best way to move forward.

It would be crazy wouldn't it? How would a playoff go with only 2 or 3 major conferences?

If I had to guess, there won't be one. Unless there is a significant shift by the end of the season (assuming it gets played in some capacity) I'm not sure corporate sponsors are going to want to be tied to bowl games that might cause an outbreak. It could just be a short season with no bowl games and an AP vote to decide the national champion after the conference championship games.

If its just the SEC and ACC then the conference champs could just play each other and call it the national championship.

Either way there's going to be an asterisk next to the champ's name this year, if there even is one.

“I’m proud today to proclaim the alabama footballers the national champs. They remind me of myself. People tell me all the time how they remind me of them. Hundreds of people think I’m a champ too. Like How they run for the home run like I do when the China people and the media attack me. Most people don’t know that forest gump played there too. I was gonna declare clemson the champ but Clemson isn’t a state so they aren’t eligible.”

NCAA has already said that at least half the teams have to participate in the season for them to recognize a champion. If that doesn't happen, the winner would just be called the CFP winner probably. There would just be a blank in the NCAA history books.

That does make sense. It could call into question the importance of the NCAA history books though. Hypothetically, the NCAA could refuse to sanction the playoff or not call the winner the NCAA champion for the year, but it probably wouldn’t matter to the fans or the school. The winner would still be the national champ in all of our minds. So they better hang a natty banner in Kenan after we beat Clemson and Bama. :D

While I agree there should be some threshold that must be met for a national champion to be declared, I think a lot of fans will just think that the other conferences made their choice, and you can’t punish the people who did play just become the others didn’t.

I don’t know if I’m making any sense here but this whole situation has made the NCAA look like even more of a joke than it already was. I think a lot of universities and conferences are going to see that college sports can function perfectly fine without the NCAA getting in the way.

I have a feeling we should start looking towards basketball season and keep our fingers crossed that it will happen.

Inexpensive & fast testing, like they have in many other parts of the world (and in a few important places domestically, like the whitehouse) could save the season in my opinion.

Might be broken record to say, but test/trace/isolate can work if your amount of spread isn't too high and if the testing is fast and easily available.

The saliva tests are cheap, but turnaround isn't necessarily faster yet. Other fast & cheap options are coming soon. The US Gov should've dumped money into testing back in Feb (the way other nations did).

If the idiotic students don’t stop have massive frat parties then everyone on campus is going to get sent home

Just announced everything is remote today. Going to have to find an excuse to keep players on campus or cancel sports.

Yep. And basketball would likely be conference games only after January.
I think that's being magnanimously optimistic.

I don't know when this Covid-19 virus will finally fizzle out. But, it won't be for a while... 6 months or so? God only knows how much it will increase and intensify around November and December through April of 2021.

I knew it was coming when I read the story about students completely disregarding social distancing protocols.

What about press? The THI intern spot is looking more and more appealing...
I don't understand why you can't have fans in seats as long as they're separated. You can cram into a commercial jet, with a mask... but and outdoor stadium, and 15-20 feet from the next fan/s is unacceptable. This thing has so many glitches and absurdities that I'm never surprised.

Flights are something that are a need in many cases. But I'm sure most people are avoiding flying if at all possible. I don't think anybody really needs to be at a college football game right now. And there's very little incentive to take on the liability for such a small number of ticket sales. If the stadium is only going to be 10-20% full, then they might as well shut it down. Maybe they can work something out so the parents can at least attend the games.

I haven't seen anything about press. The games will still be televised, so I'm guessing a limited number will be let in.

Well, there could be a need. People need their livelihoods, especially those who work at the concessions and other facilities at games. It just seems like a strange inconsistency. You're outside, in open air (redundant). The next fan is seated 10+ feet away. I'd have to say that I'm frankly surprised they're even entertaining the notion of playing the games at all.

I'm just venting. Covid exhaustion is showing.

I wish we could go to games too. Six feet between groups + masks would probably be fine but you’d still have big groups going in and out of the stadium.

On the plus side, by the time things get back to normal UNC is going to be really good at football.

Nascar had some fan events (tiny numbers, really spread out), requiring masks, though enforcement looked lame. Since they're outside and yelling, etc, some smart person should've been organizing contact tracing and studies to see get some of those people to test the day of and 5-7 days out.

I'm guessing the actual time in the stands is fine, but perhaps things like bussing, bathrooms, concessions, could be more tricky.

We're stuck with it until it dies-out and can no longer infect people.

have you guys thought at all about this cardboard cutout promo that unc is doing?...i think its great, hilarious, and has me contemplating it since i probably won't spend any money on anything sports related this fall, minus fantasy football(hopefully).

think about if we could get an ootb section, lol...i know we can't, but...
