I think 6-6 is pretty realistic.

I'm not saying it can't happen... But this team really should be 3-0 to start the year. Throw in Ga Tech and Dook and there's 5 wins right there.

They're young with a ton of unproven guys. Never any guarantees in that situation. But there's also more depth of talent than we're used to. And last time Chizik took over the defense he turned it around pretty quick with less talent than this team has.

I think 8 or 9 wins is the more likely outcome. 9 could be enough to get to the ACCCG, especially with one of the losses presumably coming from ND.

I don't see any guarantee of a 3-0 start... at all. Far from it, actually. Shoulda, woulda, coulda is UNC football. Maybe they'll perform better. I don't know.

I do know that UNC just lost the best QB in the history of the school. That's going to be a gigantic hole to fill. I'm going to be optimistic at a .500 record.

I won't say it's a guarantee but the only one that should be even a remote possibility of a loss is App State.

At this point I'm not particularly optimistic either, but Mack did make most of the moves we all wanted to see, and the 21 and 22 recruiting classes are absolutely loaded. Lots of reasons to think they can win some ball games if they play smart football. I'm really just hoping that this year shows that the program is ready to take the next step in the next two years as these young guys really settle in.

If they win 6 games this year then I think the recruiting run is over. So they better find a way to beat that number if Mack wants anything to come of his second stint here.

i’m not buying miami or pitt…carolina will be better on defense...it can’t be said enough how big, athletic, and deep the line is now…throw in a legit teacher in chizik and it’s a recipe for good things.

eta: will tony grimes please finally show up?…this guy was wanted by everyone, is an athletic freak, but has been a disappointment.

Amen to all of this. Give Chizik this much talent and I think our defense takes a huge step forward. Too much talent on the DL and in the secondary for them not to with decent coaching. The OL is my biggest concern. Our young talent at the skill positions will be fine if the OL plays well. Hopefully the defense can carry the offense the first few games until the skill positions get up to speed and acclimated to one another.

Again, I’m cautiously optimistic. I hope the first game is a blowout(it should be) and we get to see a lot of young guys.

I think we're all probably at the point where we feel like its time to put up or shut up. It's hard to be optimistic as a fan base when you watch basically everything go wrong year after year.

That being said, I've also felt like its taken just about everything going wrong to lose games the last few years.
I've lost track of how many times we've watched one unit show up, but the other unit seems like they're still on the bus until the fourth quarter. Then we storm back to within one score but just run out of time or can't catch a lucky break at the end of the game. But a lot of times if both units had just played mediocre football it probably still would have been a comfortable win.

Let's be real, the Coastal division sucks. The ACC as a whole sucks. We don't really even need to be that good to compete for conference titles.

Last season I was thinking 8-4 while saying this year would be the season to challenge for the ACC title. Defense should be really good since the talent has some experience with quality depth. I think the key is how quickly the offense can gell. Drake and the RB's have talent but just not been in games that matter.

In summary, the coaching has sucked.

I think Chizik is by far the best coach on the staff. He should be able to do great things with the defensive talent Mack has brought in. With Longo, I think you just have to put together a massive amount of talent together. Then the playcalling doesn’t have to be super dialed in. But the lack of creativity is pretty crazy when you compare him to elite OC’s

Imagine if Chizik was here a couple of years ago. Even an average D would have won us ten games with Sam. Although, he still would have gotten the shit beat out of him because of the line.

And then imagine how crazy the recruiting would’ve been with a 10 win season or two under Mack’s belt. We’d be getting the dark horse playoff contender hype

On paper the DL should be strong, but there is something in the water that softens our guys in the trenches.

And on paper the OL should be sorely lacking cohesion early due to new faces.

Thank God the offense has a tune-up the first game- no Antoine Green, no Brooks, a new QB, etc might mean pass protection still looks like a work in progress.

Seeing Howell ball in preseason on a terrible team shows how bad the team was last year for him to struggle like he did. Is there any reason to think the o line will be better? I haven’t really followed it much.

Couldn't be any worse. I think it gets at least a little better just because Searles is gone.

I've been wanting to say that almost since he's been here. Thank you. Maybe it's me, but I blame Sam's problems last year on this as much as on the o-line.

Ty Chandler has also been playing very well preseason. We had pretty good rushing numbers last yr, but maybe that was sheer talent of Chandler and Howell's scrambling.

Lost two OL to nfl, the only announced starter that started last yr, Asim, wasn't very good. So I actually think things could be bad, especially early since the announced RT didn't arrive til summer, and he's missed some practices. That right side won't be gelled for awhile.

When you watch UGA, Bama, Clemson, etc. they have tons of relatively simple plays to get their guys the ball in space and give them a chance to make a play.

The RPO thing is pretty much all Longo has going for him.

one of the things I dislike the most about pro ball is when really good players, especially the rookies trying to break in, must be cut because of roster restraints. It honestly hurts because you know some of those guys would have been kept with the right flip of a coin, and maybe turned out to be a keeper or better. I don't keep up with it much, but I don't think practice squad players have much of a chance.

I think you're underestimating the impact Searles had. Him being gone is an automatic upgrade. Worst case scenario, the line is the same. Law of averages should mean it at least shows a little improvement.

it's interesting that he's the OL coach at UGA, now. He upgraded, for sure.

Yeah, I'm not sure how he got that job. Pretty much everywhere he goes he's average at best. I read the UGA message boards after they hired him and they were all confused about it. They even brought up that UNC fans were happier about the hire than they were.

He went to, and played for, UGA.

new center will make a world of difference in protection and toughness…anderson is okay, but johnson just wasn’t strong enough and was manhandled quite a bit…i still never understood fully why they were rotating that position?

they’ll never admit it, but johnson might’ve contributed to the right side often times caving in around howell…bicknell’s lines were pretty good at limiting sacks, so that’s another positive.

i just don’t know who is taking the attention away from downs…who is another playmaker with experience?

Anderson was dealing with an ankle injury.

Need to really make the most of this FAMU game. Cant get up by a few scores and just run the ball the entire second half. Drake needs to get as many reps as possible working through the passing game.

Criswell will play along with many backups to get game experience.

Doesn't explain why he was offered the job, though. Unless Smart is an "in the family" guy.
My guess is that Smart believes Jimmys/Joes > X&Os and Searles is a really good recruiter. Not sure what else it could be given the pressure to have good line play at UGA.

ETA, my backup guess = pee tapes
