OOTB Carolina football discussion thread

My guess is that Smart believes Jimmys/Joes > X&Os and Searles is a really good recruiter. Not sure what else it could be given the pressure to have good line play at UGA.

ETA, my backup guess = pee tapes
Is he really known as a recruiter? I don't recall that being a thing. Smart is already a great recruiter, so I don't see why he would need a coach that can't coach.

of all the games we have played that I love, this is probably my favorite. I was on TOS at the time, and when I saw our schedule, I predicted that we would win the game...before the season even started. And I was so sure of it, that I reiterated my prediction every week so that I couldn't hide from it and so that no one could deny me credit.

I had to attend the renewal of an aunt and uncle's wedding vows in Clayton, and that made me late to the game so I missed the start and then some. But the atmosphere was as good as it's ever going to get...it was tremendous... and the mini-bottles started flying left and right and doing their job. It was just an awesome game and we made a ton of great plays. For it to come down to that field goal attempt was all anyone could ask for in terms of suspense and fired up fanhood. And when it went through, my dumb ass headed for the field while my friends stayed in the stands and laughed at me.

It's crazy how in a normal noonerish game the fans react like they're watching the game on TV, but in the right circumstance the absolute best party you'll ever go to happens. I wish it was like that every game, and long ago it was.

Thanks for this, my ass is pumped. I'll be crushed if tomorrow is cancelled.

I took to the field after three games, and this was one of them. It was another jewel of a football game, and the controversy at the end still continues.

Barely a scrimmage for the D to begin with, but honestly our O was going to be the only interesting part anyway on terms of new OL, new QB, young skills guys.
that’s true, but i still want to see the corners (grimes) play and the scheme…i don’t even know what a&m runs, assuming some spread/clemson stuff.

i agree with you re: ol…they have to have their way in this one.

I was pretty young but distinctly remember watching that one with my dad. One of the biggest moments in Carolina football history.

Speaking of your prediction… I have a funny feeling that we’re going to pull the upset against ND. It kinda feels like a trap game for them. Wound be an epic breakout performance for Maye to come out and light up their defense.

ND is preseason #5 ... beating them would be like the biggest win in program history, maybe?

if it wouldn't bore you to death, I'd relate all the reasons I was confident we would beat Miami that year, but one of the main ones was I figured that it was going to be a trap game for them, the week after they had to come up here to play NC State. Say what you will about State, but generally win or lose their opponent is going to know they've been in a football game. And State did play them tough, so I suspect they were beat up, tired of traveling, and looking for more of a pushover just as I thought they would. So here they come all the way back to NC the next week. looking to play by the numbers in front of the wine and cheese crowd. But the crowd was more like a bunch of crazed dogs that night, and that's how we played.

Bunting had an extra week to prepare the team, and I had noticed that when that happened, we tended to play very tough. Bunch more reasons but well, you know.

I'll be watching out for ND. Hope you're right. Bye week before that game too, might be an omen.

Lots of similarities there...

I'm interested to see if the crowd is anything like your description from that Miami game. There isn't a single top flight program in the country that doesn't have a crazy home field advantage. If you think of the toughest places to play in the country, it's all the usual playoff contenders.

From what I've read, Notre Dame is predicted to have the best offensive line in the country going into this year. That's going to be tough to overcome, but the DL is certainly this teams best unit so maybe we can still compete in the trenches and not get dominated by the run game. Need to force them to put it in the air and hope some of the guys in the secondary can makes some big plays.

The bye week is huge, but only if it's actually capitalized on. I'm confident that Chizik will have some stuff dialed up for ND. I'm not so sure that Longo has the creativity to come out with some new looks/plays that might catch them out. He has occasionally put together some nice looking trickeration, probably going to need something like that at some point during the game.

this might seem crazy, but I believe the whole season last year was affected by the opener against VaT. The fans up there understand. They KNOW they can make a big difference. I wish so bad we could generate that kind of craziness, and there's no reason we couldn't except so many of our fans just don't get it. The crowd for the Miami game was not a Carolina football crowd. It was a night game and we were playing with nothing to lose, so the real fans came out to drink some and raise some hell, and I think everybody there thought we might win. It was fantastic. It was a party. If I had my way, every game would be a night game. It's so deflating to sit among a bunch of stiffs to watch a football game, but then it's so much fun on those rare occasions when the whole stadium gets behind the team and knows that they are feeling it.

Bunting was a rare bird. Every team that gets a bye week has an advantage, but he had the knack of really capitalizing on those. It was the non-bye weeks that he had a problem with, unfortunately.

Don't get me started on Longo.

The last time I was in Kenan, there was a moment where we had a 3rd and short on defense, so naturally I'm all fired up and making noise. Suddenly got that feeling you get when you know you're being watched... I looked around and realized I was literally the only person standing up in the entire fukkin section. I made a point to stay on my feet the rest of the damn game just to prove a point. Still pisses me off when I think about it

lol, I've been there too. I'm not big on standing up unless the whole crowd does but I used to yell constantly and make rude and crude comments about the officiating, etc., and have lots of stiffs looking at me sideways. F 'em if they don't know what a fan is supposed to do.

there is nothing like a home game in blacksburg…i had never been to a game at vatech before last year…from “enter sandman” to the final whistle, they just get it…imo, it’s better than clemson and a lot of the sec stadium atmospheres.

The ratio of poasts between this thread and the politics thread is way off…
what would be the correct ratio, and may we see your methodology in making that determination?

If it looks reasonable, I'll see what I can do to bring things back into proper alignment.

After analyzing the average quality of poast between the two threads, it appears the optimal poast ratio would be at least 100:1 in favor of the football thread.

No, wait, you're judging the quality. Sorry, not going to be able to help you then.

UNC is now favored by 1.5 points against ASU. That's basically a pick'em. Playing in Boone, opening day? There's no guarantee that the offense will be as good as they were last week, either.

my prediction:

ASU- 38
UNC- 21
