OOTB Carolina football discussion thread

UNC is now favored by 1.5 points against ASU. That's basically a pick'em. Playing in Boone, opening day? There's no guarantee that the offense will be as good as they were last week, either.

my prediction:

ASU- 38
UNC- 21
I'll guess 35-31. Not sure who gets the 35, though. I'm leaning towards App St, because #UNCfootball.

when you think about the ramifications, this could be the biggest game of the year for us.
This is true. This could give our guys some confidence going into the rest of the year since it would be a solid win on the road. I think the loss at VT last year killed the whole season. If we win the VT game, that season turns out differently. Same thing with App St.

yessir, and I said the same thing in a recent post. This is a different scenario but the same situation in that it could determine how our season goes.

I hope the fight and determination that Hoobs managed to instill in the BB team shows up in the football team Saturday, because we should get a big punch in the mouth compared to what FAMU gave us. How we respond will be like a crystal ball.

does anyone know anything about app st today?…i haven’t seen them play in probably five years.
We know app state is decent on both sides of the ball every single yr. We also know the QB is Chase Brice, former dookie/tiger.

Gonna have to match their physicality and hope we wind up on the right side of turnover luck to win a shootout IMHO.

totally forgot brice went there…still not too concerned.

if we are trying to match physicality still, pack the sh*t up already…and i know last week, but i saw no scheming for that bunch.

imo, the vatech game is setting the tone…a conference game, a division game, that’s the tone setter.

Fun fact: Drake Maye currently leads the NCAA in TD's

"imo, the vatech game is setting the tone"

the tone better already be set by then.

If we’re 3-1 going into that game with a respectable loss to ND then I think fans will feel better at the very least.

I still think ND sleeps on us and Drake leads to the team to a shock upset.

I like the way you think but I'm not sure I'm ready to bet on it. We'll talk more after App. St.

To me, it feels preordained that we're going to lose to them.
you mean with all the history between the two programs?…if you said this about fsu or uva, i’d understand…i just don’t see it here.

it’s odd and quirky going there, but i think it’s much needed distraction wise.

Well, we lost to them at home last time we played. With a guy named Sam Howell at QB.
yes, i’m aware, and that’s a good point.

^^^^^ covert Va. Tech fan, IYAM.
just want my kid to enjoy something i never could in college, a good football team…when i was at scarolina, theyd never even won a bowl game…they joined the sec when i there and that felt like a championship haha.

VT's days of being a good football program ended years ago - a few years before Beamer left. I don't see them ever getting back to the days of being nationally relevant. Blacksburg is a cool place but not necessarily for college students. There's not much to sell now that the program has declined like it has. I don't know this new guy though. I'm sure he's far more likable than Fuente was but I don't know anything about his recruiting or coaching chops.

My soon to be son-in-law is a 'cock. He's actually pretty realistic and honest about what they have done in the past and what they can do down the road, but he is absolutely an earnest, die hard fan. Pretty representative of the passion.

does he live here?

tell him clayton white, the d-c, is my neighbor…for those that remember, he played at state.

Not anymore. He's up here in MD with my daughter (actually live in one of the hipper areas of Balto City, yes, I worry every minute of everyday). They are looking for a house close to jobs, etc., but don't expect to go anywhere distant. If my daughter were willing, the one place I know he'd pick up and move tomorrow would be down there.

you’re such a pisser…blacksburg is a great college town, highly ranked in fact from the actual students, not red necks from sw virginia that couldn’t get in.

as far as the program, they have a guy that’s a good, young coach, probably like any program looking for a jolt…time will tell.

@gteeitup @uncboy10 you guys seem half-full, aren't you worried about the lack of disruption on the edges and the so-so angles in the secondary? FAMU started a second-string OT and we still didn't really overwhelm them.

Our OL couldn't create much push at all, especially in the RedZone. I suspect Maye will be able to dink/dunk all game long, but at some point we need to be able to pickup short yards via ground.

I think I need to see more gm before I'm confident in the trench-play.

im more confident in the front than since butch’s second year…i don’t think chizik showed anything last week, took a second look yrsterday.

i am curious about the o-line until i see them dominating the los…however, this game, i just don’t see a challenge.

here’s a strange thought…maybe they are better right now at running it so that’s where the los is established and it turns into a 37-20 game in the 2nd half.

My cousin graduated from VPI, but that was way back in 1981. He always wanted to be an electrical engineer, and he became one. He was a high school football "star", but got an academic scholarship and didn't want the extra load of playing a full-time sport in college. He loved it there. He was in a fraternity! I helped him make paddles with the Greek letters one time! He met his future wife and lived happily ever after! lol

I used to like VPI way back then because they weren't in the ACC and... my cousin went there! And, to this day, I still call it "Vee-Pee-Eye" phonetically. I rarely say "Virginia Tech" when speaking.

The secondary is the biggest concern for me right now. I'm still in wait and see mode, but I also tend to like to enjoy the part of the season when we can still be optimistic, before everything inevitably falls apart.

Like most fans, I was underwhelmed by the performance against FAMU. It's important to remember that we see FCS and G5 teams hanging around with much better teams than we have every year. I remember a lot of occasions where Alabama, Clemson, etc. have gone into the second half of games only up by a score or two against weaker teams. They eventually put it away and move on. So I'm not going to be too negative about a performance that wasn't as dominant as it should've been.

I'm also not concerned about the running game. I think we've got two young guys at RB that will end up being 2 of the best backs in Carolina football history. The power running game is important but if you run zone or force teams to back guys out of the box to cover the pass then it gives you other options than just running power draws up the middle in short yardage situations.

We'll know a lot more after this weekend.

Our S&C staff sucks. I'm starting to think they have been the biggest problem the whole time. Our lines can't dominate a good high school team.

Now, App St. is a 2-point favorite!

That tells me how far we've come with Mack 2.0!

4th season in and we're underdogs against Appalachian State! :)

I wasn't going to do this but F it. VaT became relevant when Beamer started recruiting scum, and playing confessed statutory rapists, one of whom happened to be the star QB. I doubt any football program is pure lily white, but Beamer just threw decency out the window for the sake of winning. It sticks in my craw when he is lionized as one of the all-time great coaches. He is a POS and 'Beamer ball' is a stupid, sick joke.

On top of that, the Hokie fans gave us relentless shit and heaped lies on top of lies when we had our NCAA troubles. I'm not sure I would savor victory over Satan himself more than beating those dickheads...in their own place especially.

Why the hostility? I used to have a soft spot for VPI. I was drinking pitchers at El Rodeo, smashing pu$$y and brawling with frat brothers on that campus when I was still in high school. I'd go up to visit one of the many redneck friends or family members I had that were accepted and attended, my sister being one, who somehow graduated as a Poli Sci major and was accepted to WFU Law School despite being a stupid redneck.

And at one time, I really liked their football program. My good buddy and classmate Cornell Brown is largely responsible for putting them on the map. If you've forgotten or were just unaware, he was an All-American DE/OLB that started their run of bowl games and basically invented the lunch pail. Another buddy Andre Kendrick was a big piece of their national championship run with Vick. Another buddy Jake Grove was a Rimington Trophy winner (talk about a redneck!) I've seen more games in Lane than your son will in his time there (including the first time in school history when they beat Miami, Beamer's last game when we beat them in OT to win the Coastal and the 6 OT game just a few years ago to name a few). I've also sat in Beamer's office and have pictures with the man. Needless to say, I've earned the right to opine on their program.

But somewhere along the way, that program and its fans got a little too big for their britches. Kind of turned me off. I would have thought they would have been able to command a better hire than Fuente and now this new guy. But Beamer's last few years did a lot of damage to the tradition and mystique. He clearly hung on too long. And I just don't think they can regain the glory days. And I'm torn on whether I want it to happen.

if you're having a hard time deciding, I'd like to help. Let me know.

Going to a 12 team playoff with six at large. The only way the ACC could survive was if ND joined the conference. With six at large spots, they should have an easy time getting in, which is their biggest priority.

just giving you a hard time…very aware of the dudes you mentioned, mostly because i have watched a lot of football.

i think it’s a great college town for many reasons and while i don’t root for them being a carolina fan(fully aware of what they said about butch, etc), i’m beyond pleased my kid is in the engineering program and is flourishing.

we should probably have a beer in bb and not talk about tar heel illustrated.

I haven't really followed the conference realignment/expansion stuff all that closely. I guess the idea is that the SEC and BIG will end up taking 2 of the championship slots, plus most of the at large spots?

As it stands right now, I can't imagine the ACC getting more than 2 teams in.

That's basically it. The P5 conference champs get a spot and the highest ranking group of five champ. You know the SEC and Big will get at least four of those at large spots. That leaves one spot for ND and one spot for the other P5 schools. Going to 12 instead of 8, killed the ACC when it was already on life support.

The quick segment they just did during halftime of the Mich State game was eye opening. Cincy and Baylor would have gotten BYE's last year...
