OOTB Carolina football discussion thread

corral is out… sucks for him as a 1st rounder, but now people will see…a meaningless bowl game with a 1st round franchise type player getting hurt.

sam moving up boards.

eta: assuming it’s not a ligament/tendon
Then they will probably see him still being drafted high even though he was hurt.

Which games in the regular season are meaningful?
Technically - Any game that involves a team still in contention for a spot in the CFP or their conference championship game (or in the running for being named the champion if the conference doesn't have a CG).

Keep the major bowls (Sugar, Orange, Rose, Fiesta). I think we'll survive without the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl presented by Stifel.

Should players participate in practices with pads?

I guess if you play for Ole Miss, you should just declare for the draft as soon as you play a handful of games. They're not likely to ever be in the CFP or CG. Unless you play for the Top 6 teams, year after year, you might as well declare for the draft out of high school. Why play in all those meaningless "games" at all. Keep in mind that, the NFL is one, long, continuous series of football games.

Rewarding kids for quitting on their team is just hastening the demise of the whole thing. The product will continue to get worse.

Every bowl game outside of the CFP is a meaningless bowl game. Just stop having them.
if college football wants bowls to mean something to players and fans, go back to the system before the bcs…remember when three or four separate bowl games could determine a national champion for which a panel of writers and coaches decided?…back then, there weren’t even twenty bowl games…it was difficult to just get an invite…you might have a seven win team watching from a couch.

for me, i’d much rather be bitter towards a writer or coach than a playoff committee or a player.

And, stop rewarding teams with 6-6 records!

Well they're not eligible for the draft until 3 years post high school, so that'd be a long time to sit out. And they need to play in games to get noticed, and coveted, by the NFL scouts/teams. Most Day 1 and Day 2 picks have already accomplished that prior to the exhibition game following their final season.

I don't think anyone is rewarded for sitting out a bowl game. Unless going to the NFL combine injury-free is considered a "reward". The issue is they're not being rewarded or incentivized in any manner to play in those games.

Look, as a fan I selfishly wish they would all play the bowl games and give 100% effort to win them. It'd make watching them a lot more fun - not to mention betting on them without needing to handicap the impact of opt-outs. But if I were in their shoes, or advising them to act in their own best interest, it makes little sense for them to play and risk injury which could have a significant negative impact on their future earnings, with no real upside to speak of. "Yay, we beat 5-7 Rutgers in the Shitstain Bowl, woohoo!" isn't worth an ACL injury that could cost millions of dollars in career earnings. Maybe if players got some bonus payout for playing in the bowl game, they'd be more inclined to do so.

One example of being rewarded is the euphemism "opt-out." If they called it "quit on your team", very few people would probably do it.

I just read Bateman was out!

Last time he was here he led a quick turnaround of the defense with way less talent than we have now.

How do we feel about gene chizik returning as dc? I like it
i do as well…this guy knows how to coach a core when you have elite talent and has a volume offense…that s is hard unless you’re two deep everywhere…he’ll probably also tell mack “this is my room coach”.

I like Chizik/Warren in the short-term. I'm guessing he'd lean toward a 4-2-5 which could mean we have too many DT and not enough DE.

For example how would the UVA OLB xfer fit - regular LB or is he a DE?

We were missing Nazair Jones but that Baylor gm was a nightmare.... So I wonder if the ceiling for Chizik is a tad low. Mack & co probably all retire soon anyway, so we just need someone to tighten up fundamentals, physicality & mentality and Gene might be great for that.

warren is interesting long term…listen to that dude talk about coaching and philosophy.

he’s been in the sec and can recruit…very solid.

I'd say Chizik is a solid B- hire. Would have liked a younger guy, but he's a step up. Warren is low key the best hire of the two. He can recruit, coach his group and help Bly learn how to be a better coach.

Last time they were here we had the #1 passing defense in the ACC, and there's plenty of talent here for them to repeat that. The question for me is if Chizik can sort out the defensive front and shut down the running game.

At this point I think the defense is in better hands than the offense. There's a ton of young skills guys, including a loaded RB room that will go to waste if the OL doesn't get sorted out by next fall.

I have wondered how much does Nick Saban benefit from the Alabama name when it come to football? Could he do what he is doing there at a school like say Carolina because is he just that good of a coach and recruiter?

I feel like at a school like Carolina he would be better than most but no where near what he does now. He was blessed with a high profile "football" school names with LSU and now Bama!

He did a pretty good job at Toledo and MSU too. My guess is he wouldn't do as good of a job here because Carolina football.

the answer to that is readily available. Google something like 'Saban arrives at Alabama after accepting job' and observe the mob of crazies at the airport bowing and scraping and anointing his feet, and the look of bewilderment on his face which is clearly asking, 'WTF have I gotten myself into'?'. It's what I was referring to in some other post, a culture of not accepting failure.

On the other hand, what a really good, successful coach does is collect talent, and I have also pointed out that talent WILL COME to Chapel Hill. Assuming full support from the administration, Saban would have us at the top in no time. But the admin won't put forth that level of support, because we wouldn't demand it and finance it
