OOTB Carolina football discussion thread

Wake and State are pretty damn good

I actually forgot we even play Wake this year. That changes my Coastal division outlook a bit, but the Heels are still firmly in control of their own destiny. Wake is very beatable.

If they beat the teams they should beat (Pitt, UVA, GT, and Dook) then they win the coastal even if they lose to Wake and state

That would probably help recruiting pick back up and would also mean that we are probably getting better on D. This would come right at the time division go away and we start playing harder schedules, which stops any momentum we would have. That's Carolina football.

We'd also going into next year with a ton of media hype because of the win total and having a Heisman favorite at QB. It's possible that we could fill some major gaps with relatively high level portal guys who want to go somewhere where they can play and win a bunch of games. Add that to a pickup in recruiting and things would at least be heading in the right direction.

I'll go along with UVA and GT being bad, but Mack has issues with UVA. Pittsburgh will be a tough game, too. And, I agree that the Heels are in control, but they have a ways to go. I think they can win at least 3 more.

When Miami got stopped at the goal line, I will admit that when I came back from my... dropping the kids off at the pool... I was in shock. I just took for granted Miami was definitely going to score and it was good a time as any to have a brown baby boy.
We had a massive formation personnel-wise on that one, way different than stuff in the past with 4-2-5 for a goal-line stand.

Sorry I missed it. I watched the rest of the game! haha

I did see that the defense kept the rushing yardage very low. They're making progress.

i just watched the game…i don’t know htf carolina won that tbh…miami held receivers the entire game…i do like that gene seems to be blitzing more…also looks like maye took more chances on some throws, which i’m cool with.

carolina winning these dirty games will serve them well.

#22 in the new coach’s poll

ETA: same ranking for AP poll as well
It feels strange to be happy about UNC football. We have a shit load of problems and the schedule is horrible, but we normally fall on our faces in the same situation. Fedora had the same issues. A shitty D and a horrible schedule. He always found a way to lose. We are somehow finding a way to win. It's weird.

We're getting help from the opposing teams, in my opinion. I guess that's part of it, but I think it's more of that than it is UNC finding a way to win. The final TD drive was pretty awesome. Drake Maye is the difference, too. As great as Howell was, or Marquise Williams was... Maye is better.

It's hard to keep saying it's the other team after six wins. That can't all be on the other team unless they got together and decided to let us win because they were gambling. At some point it's about us doing just enough to win.

It's both. But, again, I think for them to really get to "next level", they're going to have to show some domination and not squeak by in every game.

Pitt
UVA
WFU
GT
NCSU

All of those, except maybe UVA, are going to be nail-biters. I put extra emphasis on the UVA game because Mack Brown is terrible in Charlottesville.

You acknowledged that our schedule is full of bad teams. Bad teams don’t know how to close the deal and often snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. We’ve been fortunate to play a lot of those types of teams. But like you say, at least we aren’t one of those teams.

If it isn’t for that botched 2 pt conversion by App and the dumb penalties by dook in the red zone, we lose both of those games. That said, it took pretty epic meltdowns to get to that point in the first place.

This year could be the best of both worlds. Winning enough to help perception and hopefully recruiting. But the defense has looked bad enough to get some assistants fired. Winning games 55-53 from here on out might be the best outcome if it brings more changes on the defensive staff.

The next level for this program is to win the worst division in football. That's what the rational goal should be. We're doing more than we've done since 2015. It's ok to admit that we're doing better than normal. We've sucked on the road for the last 150 years. This year we are finding a way to win. It's ugly and isn't against great competition, but we didn't find a way to win under Fedora. With Fedora, we just looked like shit.

Right. We used to be one of those teams. Better to win against bad comp than pull a UNC and lose against bad comp. Keep winning and we might actually become a good team along the way.

Was anyone else not impressed with the chrome helmet and white on white look? It didn’t look as bad as our defense but not great. JMO. 😎

needs to be a day game helmet…those guys are smart, they should’ve known about night games and chrome.

the idea isn’t lost on me, though.

I know it isn't currently, but was Miami ranked T-25 when we played them? I know Notre Dame was. This indicates to me that we're knocking teams out of the T-25 left and right. So we've got that going for us.

This season has shown me that UNC football fans are incredibly self loathing. This is our best start since 2015, and I think 1997 before that. It's ok to be happy about the positives. The negatives don't have to be the main headline.
I'm happy we are 6-1, but maybe ignore the headlines and watch the games, and that should put the self-loathing in perspective. I'm not a pessimist or an optimist, I'm a realist. I don't say the glass is half full OR half empty, I say that water's wet. We could just as easily be 3-4 as we are 6-1, and if the defense doesn't start becoming a defense....and if Longo doesn't start understanding when it's time to keep moving the chains instead of going for broke....we're going to get humbled. And we already have plenty enough to be humble about.

I agree with that. I've spent plenty of time on blitz talking about our issues, but I'm enjoying the wins too. We haven't been winning those games in the past. I'll enjoy the accomplishments, while recognizing our issues. I don't want to concentrate only on the issues. History shows this might not happen for another 10+ years. Enjoy the ride.

2015 is an interesting comparison, but it feels like this team has had more nail-biters (app st/duke/Miami) and is squeaking by. I'll take it though, so fun to watch Maye->Downs with chances to win.

It's fun to watch the offense. It's just a pain in the butt when the defense makes it so difficult for the team to win. And it's always like that. I never expect them to win but it's fun, and usually very nerve-racking, when they do.

So Pitt lost to Louisville this weekend meaning we probably fall backwards into the ACCCG now. And frankly, Clemson isn't scary like usual. So we could potentially win the ACC. Would we be the worst P5 conference champion, like ever? Still a long way to go, I know. But we could potentially lose to WFU and moo, meaning we'd end up in the championship game having not beaten a ranked team.
