The sad thing is that GOP strategists must agree with this take. They can't get out of their own way and managed to fumble an unfumbleable midterm cycle.
That's the real story going on here. They should have cleaned house. Instead they doubled down on the worst aspects of far right issues and Trumpism and now they look like fools.
The GOP is going to continue to get hammered on abortion. That much is clear.
The strategists are having to contend with trump-ism. GOP used to pretty good at the game of politics, not now though. Dobbs hurt too.
Definitely the story of the night. I read that 53% of voters in PA disapproved of Biden's job performance, but that 14% of those people still voted for Fetterman. Which was well over the margin of victory.
So the Republicans had the voters exactly where they wanted them. And yet, they still elected the brain dead love child of Sloth from the Goonies and Hodor from Game of Thrones, because the GOP couldn't put forth a semi-capable candidate that could just keep the ball in play.
I think this is the thing that is going to make them move away from Trump. He's an easy guy to blame (whether he deserves it, meh, 50/50) and you already read some right leaning sites this morning doing it.
Inflation is insane, recession talks are everywhere, and Biden makes an ass out of himself almost daily on TV...yet they couldn't take flip +1 senate seat and they'll barely flip the house? That's a bad bad look.
I made the comment on here when Roe v Wade was first overturned...this may be a blessing for the Dems because it gives them a rallying cry.
By the way, anti-Abortion measures are now 0-4 on state ballots...with Kansas and Kentucky being two of those states. Most women, even those pretty conservative, are just simply not going to vote anti-abortion outside of the most red of states.
It also makes me wonder if Biden's relative benign nature may have played a role. People like Trump, Hillary, and even Obama rub people the wrong way. Biden is often mocked for his gaffes and is seen by the right as a bureaucratic buffoon. But an overwhelming threat that must be opposed at all costs? Not quite.
And to be fair, a good chunk of Trump endorsed candidates on the local, state, and national level did win, including election deniers. However, they were mostly in deep red states anyway. He lost big time in the battleground states- Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, etc. where Trump definitely wanted lackeys in place for the 2024 election. He may not even get Arizona.
Maybe some sanity among never-trumper conservatives. But normalcy is low voter turnout, especially young people. And normalcy is mid-terms being a referendum on the current pres.
These might be changing, this was abnormal. Young people don't like putin lovers, election deniers, climate deniers, racists and people who force rape victims to carry. They do like debt-cancelation, gun legislation, affordable healthcare, climate care, and weed.

If it can’t be what I want, then chaos is the next best option for me. So if the MAGA movement can’t prosper, then I hope there’s enough of it to prevent any other movement from prospering, which is where we’ll find ourselves after this election.
People like me will bide our time until we have the power to make significant changes.
I'm still not sold that they like debt-cancellation. I think these results speak more to a disdain for the things you listed as things they don't like, than it speaks to there being support for the things you listed as things they do like (with the exception of weed).

Like I said, I’ll be mad for a few days and then I’ll get over it. My city council went red for the first time in over a decade. So that’s my silver lining. You’ll need treatment to come back from where you are, hopefully before you try to kill yourself, which many of your kind sadly attempt. People like me were trying to keep more young people from going your route. You may not thank me, but the parents of kids eventually will.

I’m trying to keep it that way by preventing the encouragement of youth becoming mentally disturbed like you. In other words, go be yourself…quietly…behind closed doors. If you do that, I won’t feel the need to attack you.

You're probably right on debt-cancellation, and I agree that the "anti" vote is what drives people out of contentment off their couch.
I hope you are right. Young people are going to keep voting, i think, and i don't want debt-cancellation in it's recent shape to be a thing.
I do hope we reach a day again where voting isn't about what we're voting against but rather what we're voting for.
That will never be a thing ever again. Not in our lifetimes. Higher probability of complete fracture of the country than that happening.
