Not sure this gentleman is an American hero unless you are going to suggest that all those who have served are the same (I'd be fine with that and appreciate their service to us all) I'm also not sure where you copied/pasted this from, or why it had to be in 25 pt sized font, but I agree that this is part of our freedoms that have repeatedly been fought and sacrificed over. It's not ok to express yourself at a drag show, but verboten to protest at a rally for, say, election integrity. Just because something is not on the approved list of agenda items doesn't make it wrong, illegal, or that which must be stopped. For example, while I think you are an idiot if you burn the American flag, I will absolutely defend your ability to do so. Just don't do it where the fire itself would create a hazard. Thus, it's the fire that is the problem, not the substance being burned. Drag shows themselves are a nonissue as well. It's encouraging and/or requiring little ones, who have no ability to yet discern who or what they are or the maturity for the topics involved, to attend that is the issue.
The guy disarmed a mass shooter and saved lives. That’s why he’s a hero.
As for drag shows and kids I’m gonna leave that one up to the parents to decide. If mature topics are to be avoided that pretty much rules out church and Disney movies such as lion king and sleeping beauty as well.

So far as 'these kids' doing whatever the hell they want because that's what he fought for, I would have to assume he didn't take so much shrapnel in the noggin that he meant WHATEVER they want. I think he just meant that if his adult daughters adult friend wanted to drag it up a little in front of a crowd of adult people inside an adult club, he had no problem with it.
Neither do I...as long as they didn't involve children or take it outside and turn it into a parade or other exhibition. That would make me grit my teeth a little.

Thanks for the context of who Mr. Fierro is and why we are posting a quote from him. I agree 110% with your post. Now that I know who he is, he certainly is a hero because of his actions and the number of lives he undoubtedly saved. I also agree that leaving things "up to the parents to decide" is and always has been the answer to most of these issues. After all, they are the ones taking their kids to "church" and/or deciding when and which "Disney movies" to watch.
Two more things about the quote. First, clearly Mr. Fierro's reference to kids was simply the generation below him and not actual kids as they were all in a nightclub, so the quote is misleading as posted (shocking, lol). Second, let's all be thankful for people like Mr. Fierro who are still willing to help others despite potentially exposing themselves to great risk and liability. He is a hero and obviously doesn't subscribe to the notion that certain posters here would argue that he should have cowered and simply waited for the police to respond.
I can't get to the NYT article because it's behind their paywall, but I did see other stuff related to Mr. Fierro. Here is another quote that the gentleman expressed that I only wish more of our country would employ. I think it's clear from my postings here as to how I would characterize the current individual occupying the oval office, but I agree completely with Mr. Fierro due to the respect I have for the office:
