OOTB's Political Thread . ..

First of all, that movie came out in 2005. I'm pretty sure everyone here was born when it came out. But you're right, I don't remember there being some huge debate about it because I don't hang in the right wing evangelical circles where every depiction of an abortion is an earth shattering event. Only a complete simpleton would think something is okay just because they saw it in a movie.

Good grief man what a ridiculous argument. I didn't dismiss the murder of pregnant women. I pointed out the clear difference between murdering a pregnant woman in a case where she wants to carry the pregnancy to term, vs an elective abortion. Do you think that taking someone who is in a vegetative state off of life support is murder too? They're either alive or they aren't, right?... I don't think you've ever bothered to grapple with the complex ethical dilemma of abortion and what constitutes life, beyond telling yourself that abortion is baby murder.

You call me an elitist but go on to make condescending remarks about 'not believing in homosexuality' while in the same poast talking about how you believe in freedom of choice. You don't believe in freedom of choice. You believe that people should live their lives according to the morality taught in an old book that also tells people that if you rape a woman you should marry her. There is nothing proven about the morality of the bible aside from the fact that it is completely backwards. You know what's really elitist? Thinking you know the mind of god and that people who don't believe in the same fairy tale as you will go to hell to be tortured for eternity. That's the single most elitist concept ever created by human beings.
"...that also tells people that if you rape a woman you should marry her"

this is actually based on good moral grounding and I would have no problem with it being made into law. The problem is that this country puts a limit on the number of wives you can have...one, I think it is. Ridiculous.

Hey... I've been meaning to ask you... You ever hear of Dr. Bart Erhman? Turns out, He's a professor at UNC Chapel Hill for many years now. I flunked-out before he came. I happened to get steered-into some of his lectures and debates on You Tube.

He's a New Testament scholar and historian. He was an evangelical fundamentalist Christian until he found inherent flaws in Scripture and realized that agnostic was the only way to be without intellectually-compromising himself. He's a pretty interesting guy and his lectures and seminars, and debates, are really great. For a while, I never knew he wasn't a Christian, technically. Then, he openly said "I'm no longer a 'Christian', I'm agnostic."

You might really enjoy listening to him. And, he's a huge UNC basketball fan!

classic debate here. i'm very familiar with Ehrman ... i've seen him in person several times. i'm an open-minded Christian and enjoy reading/studying folks like Ehrman bc they challenge my faith in Christ/the Bible and keep me focused and balanced. he's a very smart guy but i disagree with his overall view of Christianity, the importance of Jesus Christ and the validity of the Bible.

Have you heard the oft-told story about his first-day pop quiz to the students, and if they get all the answers right, he buys them a dinner at the Armadillo in Carrboro?

this isn't hard. Suppose you go to a really good party and as it turns out, you end up raping somebody. If a rape>marry law was in effect, the one spouse law would, in effect, dictate that you could only ever go to one really good party. How is that fair? Government ruins everything. There should be no limit on the number of spouses one can have, or on the number of really good parties you go to...

Yeah, but what if I rape someone at a bad party? Do I still have to marry them?

Or is that like, "oh well, the party sucked so I had to rape someone to pass the time." I feel like that's a pretty solid reason.

no, you're not following. First of all, the 'really good party' is what leads to the rape. Conversely, how can a party culminating in rape be considered a bad party? Second of all, the rape>marry law would hardly distinguish between the various circumstances surrounding the rape.

But now if you rape someone already married....?
sticky situation. You're in danger of becoming a bigamist under our current set of nonsensical and invasive laws...unless of course the spouse of the rapee does the right thing and kicks the rapee out of the marriage (after administering a sound beating).

No wait, I think I'm getting this mixed up with with a different set of laws.

Good stories don't come out of rapey, parking deck encounters?
well sure, you can always reminisce about that really great parking deck where you first forced yourself on your wife...if parking decks are something that speak romance to you.

That would be ideal but I’m not hopeful.
The dude ain't above it. No way. Skin that thin combined with unlimited funds can be a dangerous thing, I would imagine. I wonder just how many bodies are buried at the bottom of Mr. Trump's checkbook.
